Has anyone heard of a rumor that there is a petition circulating seeking 2,000 signatures to permit 48 hour conjugal visits? My sweetie asked me to look into it with Constituent Services at Central Office in Phoenix. Anyone know anything about this, and if so where do I go for more info, to sign, etc.?

Ahna, thanks so much ... I did find two links to the same petition (for all U.S. states) and have signed it. I did not find one specifically for AZ, but will keep searching the threads. If you have the script of the link I'd appreciate it ... thanks!

being that you as I am .. are not from America .. be certain before you sign that it allows and accepts non US citizen signatures as if not it can affect it.. unless of course if you have dual citizenship
az used to have them butas with all other good things they were removed

I did look into that and it seems OK to still sign even as a non-American without fear of endangering the petition ... thanks for that heads up I had not thought of that ...

Yeah, I keep joking he needs to transfer from AZ to NY where conjugal visits still exist and much closer to me ... ha ha ha ... heck I'm mad that they can't record their own tape cassettes anymore but grateful they can still accept ours ... keep fingers crossed.

This isn't the first petition for this. What's the next step after it's signed? What are the REAL chances of this happening in our state?

This petition is for all states. So after we finally collect enough signatures, it will be send along with the proposal which you can read in the Conjugal visit thread in the petition forum, to the US Senate, US Congress to the Legislatures of all states and to every Director of the states DOCs. Yes, it is a lot of work, but if we all stick together and help out, we will have a good chance of getting this thru.

The petition is not only for Arizona, but for all the prisons in every state. I myself will stay positive about the whole thing and if we all stick together on this, one of those days it will come thru. Why think negative, if none of us know what the outcome will be. And there are actually six states in the US at this point and time that provide extended family visits.

Blues is correct. We have to remain positive. It can't come into effect until some action is started. We have to advocate for it whether we know it will be successful or not. That's what the petition is aiming to do. In AZ the new Director's mission is to improve the public's view of it's prison system as the ADC has taken a lot of heat in recent years. And AZ did once have things like weekend passes as recent as the late 80s.

I think if we can fully comprehend the reasons behind the policies that prohibit these conjugal/extended family visits we (the public) can work towards proposing low-risk, viable measures that appease the concerns of the DOC at the same time promoting the incentives and benefits to the inmates and their families then everybody can win.

The successful art of negotiations is promoting benefit and gain to all parties. If the cost to implement, manage such programs far outweighs the benefit back to the DOC it will never happen, so we have to show them how much they stand to gain.

Thank you very much for the support hockeygal! Yes you are very right with what you did have to say.
In the visitation rules for the ADOC itself it says that they want to make visits as much family oriented as possible, since it is very important for the inmates to keep close family and community ties.
I also posted a proposal in the petition forum under the thread conjugal visits for all prison. Everybody please feel free to read over it and let me know if anything else needs to be added. Together we will make a difference!
