Wrongful Death Lawsuit Filed in Inmate Murder
Cheyenne
Associated Press
The murder of a state penitentiary inmate nearly two years ago has resulted in a civil lawsuit.
The estate of Ellis Kennedy is suing various state prison officials and the prison's contract health provider. It seeks a jury trial and damages, including $500,000 in punitive damages.
Kennedy was killed in his cell in the Wyoming State Penitentiary's protective custody unit at Rawlins in March 2000. Three other inmates were convicted of the death and sentenced to additional prison time.
The suit argues the prison failed to maintain the level of security required in the protective custody unit. It also says prison officials ignored Kennedy's request for protection from other inmates.
