fire_rain53 11-10-2004, 07:28 AM How about NO water for days...and staph infection???? Ventress, has that all the time! I think it is a pitiful situation at all the prisons! It seems like the health department could do something! :(
Kay
Leeslady I'm not sure who to call but you can bet if it's anyone in "The System" they are just going to brush it off. These people here are the ones that bring about the lawsuits and they are suppose to be watching to see if health care is improving in the state. Here are the phone numbers and addresses if you want to give them a call:
Southern Center for Human Rights
83 Poplar Street, N.W. Atlanta, Georgia 30303-2122
Telephone [404] 688-1202 Fax [404] 688-9440
Emailrights@schr.org
Website:http://www.schr.org/index.html
Hope this helps maybe they can help or tell you who to contact!
Mrs.J. 11-10-2004, 11:02 AM Have you considered calling the media?
cawillia 11-10-2004, 11:04 AM I really hope this helps. There is an attourney who I heard speak who deals a lot with medical stuff. She got a bunch of inmates fans and she works in the state of Alabama. If you want to pm me I can find out more info on her. She is a really good person and I was thinking if you got in touch with her she could tell you what you could do and what needs to be done.
Contacting one of the local newspapers there would be a great idea...they hate being in the news and it could shed some light on the fact no one in the system cares and probably make "ol Bob look bad as well!
I talked to someone about this last night on MSN messenger and they told me to start at the bottom (warden) and work your way up the "chain". She also said something about contacting Health Department people...they will more than likely look into it. I agree with lace too...put an article in the newspaper...heck...email one to every newspaper in Alabama. :p This whole thing really disgusts me....
LeesLady 11-10-2004, 03:50 PM Thanks for the info Everybody.I've been running all day today so I'll have to wait and see what I can get done in the morning.I don't think it will do any good to try and talk to the warden,he already knows what's going on.And I've called the health Dept.before when the showers were standing in several inches of water for no telling how long.No help there,so I think I'll try Lace idea.Something has got to give!!!!And maybe even try contacting ALL the newspapers I can think of about the health issue.
angelntn 11-10-2004, 04:22 PM Hey Lee, I would love to help you! I have had a few ideas myself about contacting the media about all the crap that goes on there!!!!! Including the water problem! Just let me know!
ragland 11-10-2004, 07:14 PM first thing you have to do is NOT contact someone that is in the buisness of saving the state money. second you have to make sure whoever you contact IS in fact an advocate FOR inmates. and thirdly dont loose your cool. i know the other day on 101.1 the source they taped 5 mins worth of callers calling in and sent it to the board of P&P and the callers were P!SSED! they did something to assure that they were heard and i applaud them for that.
Leeslady here is a piece from one of our news articles here in our forum....
Attorneys with the Southern Center for Human Rights, a nonprofit legal firm which filed the Tutwiler and Limestone lawsuits, said they have noticed some improvements in crowding and additional medical personnel, but expect more changes.
They are suppose to be watching the health care issue here and probably needs to know this is going on and nothing is being done about it.
The chain of command thing is only used for covering ones a**!
The addresses to The Southern Center for Human Rights are where I posted them above. I had the pleasure of talking with some of them ( Tamara Sewert) while they was here taking care of business in Morgan County. They should be able to help.
HMMM....LOL! Leeslady I just found this...maybe you would like to e-mail "the Man Himself" and ask him why nothing is being done or why you can't get anyone to listen!
Ask The Governor: Thursday at 5pm
Do you have a question for Governor Bob Riley?
He'll be live in the studio this Thursday, November 11, on NewsChannel 19 at Five.
Gov. Riley will touch on the special session lawmakers are holding right now to cut health insurance costs , but he'll also field your questions, about any topic.
E-mail us today at whntfeedback@whnt.com to get your question in!
Let me guess he will probably instruct you to contact the prision commissioner since that's not what he does unless him and our lovely Troy King are sticking their nose in parole board issues to keep someone from being paroled then all of a sudden they can do that!!!!!
PJ1965 11-11-2004, 05:34 PM Jackie Moore is the person who done an audit on Alabama prisons not too long ago, she may be able to help you. I have her email address, if you would like it, pm me and I'll send it to you. Ron Cavanaugh is the Medical Director for the DOC and has been helpful to me but I'm not sure if he's still there or was replaced by that woman in the article. His number is 334-353-3875 if you want to try him abot the staph infection. Good luck!
Mrs.J. 11-11-2004, 05:50 PM Whatever you do...good luck.
fire_rain53 11-11-2004, 07:14 PM lace...did you see the govenor live in the studio answering questions? I e-mailed my question in and was just dying to see if he answered! lol...lol....I'm sure he did!
:)
Kay
coolchik4sure 11-11-2004, 07:52 PM I read where staph infections were an epidemic and many believed the culprit to be spider bites! The newspaper was an excellent idea, also, the DOC has an infection control person/ health & safety office, that have to answer to OSHA and DHEC. I would notify as many people as I could about both issues! Goodluck and let us know the outcome.
LeesLady 11-11-2004, 10:26 PM Okay Everybody,I e-mailed the Human Rights Group!!I think now I'm fixing to pull up my local paper and see if I might get them to print something in the paper.I talked to Lee and he said they are suppose to be getting in the parts to fix the hot water. He also told me about this guy that got caught with drugs and when the CO tried to restrain him he ran from her.Well she let other inmates tackle this guy and beat the mess out of him.Nothing was done to the guys that beat him up,but this guy was sent back behind the fence.Well I told the Human Rights people about that too.
Yes Kay I did watch the Govenor Riley on 19 news...He only answered 3 questions as fast as he could. They all pertained to the increase in the amount you pay for health care insurance if you smoke. It was funny because some one sent in did he plan to increase the amount paid for insurance if you were big, fat, overweight pill popper or a drunk! Lol! Naturally, he came up with the same old wishy washy crap he is known for.
Leeslady let us know if you hear from the human rights group hopefully they will check into it. Keep us posted and good luck!
LeesLady 11-15-2004, 03:32 PM Well I can't get the darn e-mail to go through!!
