I am a student studying the views of whether or not a prisoner should have the opportunity of being rehabilitated. If anyone is someone who has been rehabilitated would you please help me by giving me your opinion. Anyone else what do you think about the option?

Hi! I'm not sure this is the best place to put this question (there are forums for offenders who have come home) but I will say of course I beleive in rehabilitation as opposed to punishment. My man's father is someone who gave up a life of crime and is now out doing good in the community, supporting his family and counseling kids to stay out of gangs. My cousin has also gotten out is doing well.
But I don't believe it was the prison that "rehabilitated" them. It was the support of friends and family, a church, along with a few employers willing to give them a break, that really made the difference.

As we all know the prisons gave up on rehabilitation years ago. It is more PC to punish them and give them bare minimum than to actually see what could be done to turn their lives around. I am still waiting for them to change their name from 'dept of corrections' to 'dept of punishment' as i truly believe that the title should fit the circumstance.

should have the oppertunity to be rehablitated? of course. do prison's rehablitate? yes and no. that solely depends on the person in my opinion. i know in texas where my man is they are very cruel and injust. i think matt has done his own internal rehablitation b/c he has a true desire to change. not from the classes he was in. tell us more about the paper you are writing?

I have to agree with Ann that prisons as was told to me is too punish.. not reward.. etc.. ok now what kind of rehab are you talking about .. ?? drug ? alcohol? abuse?
job search? GED? ETC..
It varies from prison to prison.. alot has been cut due to budget's again in this neck of the woods:)
Good luck with your study

I am moving this to a forum where it will get better responses - the Lifer forum isn't the appropriate place.
