Police: Inmates had sex with underage girl
IDAHO FALLS (AP) -- A Terreton man has been charged with sexual battery for allegedly allowing his underage daughter to have sex with inmates from St. Anthony Work Camp.
Jerry L. Mattson, 57, faces two felony counts of sexual battery of a child 16 or 17 years old. Deputy Prosecutor Stephen Clark said Mattson is not charged with having sexual relations with his daughter, but for his alleged role in incidents involving others.
The inmate crew was working in Mattson's neighborhood in late April and early May, when the incident allegedly occurred, Clark said. The girl was not physically injured during the incident, Clark said, though he would not release any additional details about the case.
It is unclear where the officer in charge of the inmates was at the time. Teresa Jones, spokeswoman for the Idaho Department of Corrections, said the officer has since resigned for unrelated reasons.
Normally one officer supervises between 10 and 12 work crew inmates, she said. Jones also would not release any additional details, but said the matter is still under investigation by the Department of Correction, and department officials are cooperating with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.
Inmates are expected to be charged as well, Clark said. He declined to say how many suspects are involved. The St. Anthony Work Camp has about 200 inmates who work in the region as fire crews and industrial laborers.
Mattson was arrested after an undercover investigation by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office and the Idaho Department of Correction. That investigation was prompted by a tip to the Corrections Department in late September, Jones said.
"If inmates were involved, we'll work with local authorities on that," Jones said. "We're glad to work with Jefferson County. We'll partner with them when they need us."
