I just saw this on the travel channel...this was the largest prison of its time...its now been converted to a hotel where you can even do role playing....

Långholmen Hotel was once a prison. So you probably wonder if you're really going to stay in a cell. Do guests stay in the cells? Is anything served apart from bread and water? Do you have to knock on the wall to arrange with your neighbour what time to meet in the bar? Is there a bar, in fact? Are the exercise yards still used as a keep-fit centre?

The hotel is housed in the old Crown Prison, which was built in the early 19th century. In the middle of the building is the attractive gallery dating from 1866. This has given us the hotel's beautiful, open atrium.

http://www.langholmen.com/pics/osynlig.gifIn 1975, the last prisoner was discharged and in May 1989 we opened the hotel after two years' renovation work. The cells are now pleasingly and functionally furnished, each with its own shower, WC, telephone, radio and cable TV. We have 89 single and 13 double cells, of which 10 have facilities for the disabled.
All our cells are smokefree.
The old prison entrance hall has been converted into a reception, with a cafeteria open 24 hours a day. Times change, and staying in a cell is now a captivating experience. We promise to give you your own key, and that breakfast consists of more than bread and water.

The suspects are taken by the warders to the ‘Långholmen Court’, in the cellar of the old Spinning-House. Our judge is not usually merciful towards the offenders, and the sentence is usually lifetime imprisonment in Långholmen!

When the verdict has been issued, it is time for to get washed and dressed (in striped prison uniform), followed by admission. There is one chance of freedom: if the prisoners succeed in earning the bail required: 500,000 riksdaler. Fångarna delas in i olika ligor som t.ex. Kåkfararna, Tjallarna och Björnligan, The prisons are divided into different gangs, such as the Jailbirds, the Squealers and the Bears, who compete against one another. Each gang is given an empty money-bag to collect cash in, and a playing-board. The gang leader decides who is most suitable for each job. At every station there is a warder or host (a person from your group). The warders are tough but bribable, and can issue style points. So the prisoners must try to charm the warders, perhaps with a battle song or by walking in a neat formation.
When the gang has been to all the (seven or so) stations, it is time to come before the judge again. (During the summer months, several stations are outdoors.) The winning gang is the one that succeeds in collecting the bail required, earns the most style points and succeeds in answering most questions correctly. At the Finkan pub, now is a good time to treat the thirsty prisoners to ‘bread and water’ (strength according to taste).

The actual game takes about two hours. The arrangement is concluded with a prison party. The guests, still clad in striped prison uniform, convene in our wine cellar (maximum number: 36) or our banqueting hall (max. 90). Here, it is exciting to hear how the various gangs have fared. And the members of the winning team may also, perhaps, sing their battle song!

The prison director would like to pass on this advice:
"Don’t wear your best suit or dress - here, there are no members of the press! Welcome!"
