Prison Dog Program

A program at two Kansas prisons is helping save stray dogs.

Non-aggressive dogs from local shelters are being locked up with inmates at the correctional facilities in Lansing and Osawatomie.

The dogs live with the prisoner, who helps housebreak them. Prison officials say many of the animals learn commands and some have even learned to open and close doors and turn the lights on and off.

The program started three months ago with just six dogs. There are now three dozen animals housed within prison walls.

The program saves the dogs from euthanasia.

After the animals are sufficiently housebroken, they're offered for adoption

I used to puppy raise for an Assiatance dog school in Cancordia, KS named CARES Inc. that did the prison dog program. I am un sure if they still do it or not. And I cannot for the life of me remember the name of the prison they did it in. I think it was Ellsworth. I think it's an awesome thing to do in general. I've been doing it since I was 16 and it not only helped me but more importanly it helped the person that got the dog.
