Prison Dog Program
AP
A program at two Kansas prisons is helping save stray dogs.
Non-aggressive dogs from local shelters are being locked up with inmates at the correctional facilities in Lansing and Osawatomie.
The dogs live with the prisoner, who helps housebreak them. Prison officials say many of the animals learn commands and some have even learned to open and close doors and turn the lights on and off.
The program started three months ago with just six dogs. There are now three dozen animals housed within prison walls.
The program saves the dogs from euthanasia.
After the animals are sufficiently housebroken, they're offered for adoption
