View Full Version : Who's my Dad????
MURCHIE 10-31-2004, 05:53 PM Hi, my mother had me in 1982 and didn't put my fathers name on the birth certificate....however she did tell me that his name was Glen (Glenn?) Thompson and he was probably born between 1950 -1952?? He was in and out of jail throughout his life apparently especially around NSW and Sydney. As far as I am aware he died in jail (not sure which one) and I am really just after some information about how I go about getting in contact with someone to get pictures or personal details....I do understand I have little info besides his name but I thought it was about time that I found out who my dad was..my mother has no pictures, and I have never meet him or anything (that I remember)...
Any help would be so appreciated...thanks all. :)
Cheers Murchie.
MURCHIE 10-31-2004, 06:16 PM Me again...I just rang the NSW correctional services and they said unless i know his Date of Birth then I am pretty much going to have no luck in finding him due to the laws of privacy etc....maybe someone use to know him or his family????
1dayatatime 10-31-2004, 06:18 PM Will your mom give you a date of birth?

kezcat 10-31-2004, 06:37 PM Hi MURCHIE,
I wish I had some useful advice for you, but 'Thompson' is a fairly common name, so tracking down his family will be tough going. Does your mum know anything like where exactly his family are from, or perhaps his exact birthdate? I just thought that it may be possible to track down any brothers he may have had, they would be a good source of information and pics of your dad...if your mum knows where he went to school, you can try looking at www.schoolfriends.com.au and messaging people who he went to school with. That's how I found an old friend of mine who I hadn't seen for over 20 years.
Anyway, that's all I can think of for now.
((hugs))
I really wish I had a better idea for you.
kezcat 10-31-2004, 06:42 PM Hi again, MURCHIE, I just checked and there are several Glenn (Glen) Thompson's registered with schoolfriends...if you know the approximate area he grew up in it may be worth checking out.
MURCHIE 10-31-2004, 07:53 PM Hi, he grew up as much as I know around Blakehurst and Hurstville areas...I am pretty sure he lived on King Georges Road but I don't know if he grew up there. My mother is pretty vague on the topic..she has never really told me anything...
Any info would be great to find out...I know he had a brother called Mike but where he lives...who knows...
Thanks for the advice...appreciated.
Cheers
MURCHIE 10-31-2004, 08:05 PM Hi Kezcat, i went to schoolfriends site...how do you know if they are registered or not. plus my dad is deceased too.
kezcat 10-31-2004, 09:30 PM Hi again, MURCHIE,
You have his brother's name- that's a good start. When you go to the Schoolfriends site, there is an option that lets you do a search. I think it's 'Search for a friend'...then put in his brother's name and see if anything comes up for the years you think he would have been at school.
Another way I have tracked down a friend I hadn't seen for many years was to do the phonebook thing. Maybe you could pick out the 'M Thompsons' and give them a ring. I know this sounds tedious, but I really can't think of anything else at the moment.
I am going to have more of a think about this- I'll post again after I have talked to a couple of people about which way you could go regarding finding your dad's family, ok?
MURCHIE 10-31-2004, 10:15 PM HI again....I checked the schoolfriends site again for M. Thompson and it didn't find anything that was around the right location etc.....so not sure now....the problem with the phone book thing is besides there are so many Thompson's is the fact I don't know what mick's wifes name is and if the phone number would have her name first....could be a drama and a half...
I really appreciate your thoughts on this though.
Thanks :) :)
kezcat 10-31-2004, 11:22 PM Hmmm, you are right, MURCHIE...so many Thompsons (I just had a look in the phonebook)
One more thing I can think of for now...what about ad ad in the Herald or something. You know, in the classifieds. Maybe if Mike doesn't read it, someone who knows him will. It could say something like: In search of MIKE THOMPSON, brother of Glenn, formerly from the Hurstville area. I often see notices such as this, so they must bring about some success...
Anyway, I'll keep thinking, and as I said, I will ask around to see if anyone has any other ideas.
MURCHIE 11-01-2004, 05:29 PM Hi, well I found out from the funeral director that Glen's dads name was Sydney Thompson so I looked in the phonebook...oh and he lives in Caringbah,,,no luck there was only one and thats not the right person...I rang the hospitals and the nursing homes so I think he is deceased. I think also by what the funeral lady said that Mikes name is really Ian (don't know how..or maybe another relative) so its sort of at a dead end now...
Not sure what to do now.
Hi Murchie and welcome to PTO :D
Do you have a copy of your birth certificate to get your dads full name and birthdate?
MURCHIE 11-02-2004, 03:33 PM Hi, my mother didn't put my fathers name on my birth certificate...it says unknown....it would be great if it did...the correctional services could give me a picture or info I am looking for.
kezcat 11-06-2004, 06:56 PM Hi Murchie, I have been giving this a lot of thought and I really can't think of anything other than what you have already done or what I have suggested.
Please keep us posted on your developments...
oz ex-prisoner 11-08-2004, 02:45 AM Hi Murchie, I am around your dad's age and I have done 15 in NSW jails starting in 1969. I vaguely remember a Glenn Thompson but I don't want to lead you up the garden path on speculation. Contact Brett Collins at Justice Action in Sydney and utilise the ex-prisoner network. If I had some info as to what jails he was in, how long he did etc I might be able to hone in on something for you. At the moment I just have a vague recollection of that name - possibly at Parramatta Jail 1973-74 or Parramatta Jail 1978-79. I will ask around some of my contacts and see what I come with. cheers
chezza 12-06-2004, 07:37 AM Hello Murchie, You said you had contacted the funeral director is this the one who buried him? If so have you been to his grave on his stone should have his birthdate & date of death. Even the funeral director would have that info..
