SMITH STATE PRISON HONORED AS
FACILITY OF THE YEAR

Atlanta - Smith State Prison was chosen as the Georgia Department of Corrections' Facility of the Year. The award was accepted by Warden William Terry during the 1st Annual Excellence in Corrections Conference held October 18 - 20, 2004 at the Centreplex in Macon, Georgia.

All facilities were judged based on a wide variety, critical success selection criteria. Smith State Prison emerged from the group representing the best facility in 2004.

Smith State Prison is a Close-security male prison in Glennville, Georgia. This prison typically houses inmates with behavioral problems that cannot be addressed at other institutions. It also houses probation detainees with behavioral problems, as well as those with long sentences and medical problems. There are approximately 1,301 inmates and 289 employees.

A luncheon has been scheduled for Monday, November 1, 2004 at 11:30 a.m. on the grounds of Smith State Prison to honor the staff that rises above the call of duty every day to ensure a safe and secure Georgia.

"The employees of Smith State Prison exert the purpose, performance, and passion that the Department strives for," said Corrections Commissioner James E. Donald. "This is our chance to honor the winners who emerged who represent the best in their field."

The purpose of the Excellence in Corrections Conference was to build a criminal justice community that enhances public safety by focusing on professionalism and the sharing of ideas, while recognizing its team members.

The conference highlighted items such as re-entry, state partnerships, and community partnerships. Included in the conference were the Department of Corrections, the Department of Juvenile Justice, the State Board of Pardons & Paroles, the Department of Public Safety, Department of Labor, and other state agencies. This will enable the criminal justice community to act as one team to employ best practices.
