RICHMOND COUNTY CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION HONORED AS COUNTY CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION OF THE YEAR
Atlanta - Richmond County Correctional Institution was chosen as the Georgia Department of Corrections' County Correctional Institution of the Year. The award was accepted by Warden Robert Leverett during the 1st Annual Excellence in Corrections Conference held October 18 - 20, 2004 at the Centreplex in Macon, Georgia.
All facilities were judged based on a wide variety, critical success selection criteria. Richmond County emerged from the group representing the best facility in 2004.
Richmond County Correctional Institution is a 350-bed, medium-security facility located in Augusta, Georgia. They house 215 state inmates and have 64 employees. They provide housing for state and county inmates and a general labor force supporting Richmond County Government.
"The employees of the Richmond County Correctional Institution exert the pride, performance, and passion that the Department strives for," said Corrections Commissioner James E. Donald. "This is our chance to honor the winners who emerged who represent the best in their field."
The purpose of the Excellence in Corrections Conference was to build a criminal justice community that enhances public safety by focusing on professionalism and the sharing of ideas, while recognizing its team members.
The conference highlighted items such as re-entry, state partnerships, and community partnerships. Included in the conference were the Department of Corrections, the Department of Juvenile Justice, State Board of Pardons & Paroles, the Department of Public Safety, Department of Labor, and other state agencies. This will enable the criminal justice community to act as one team to employ best practices.
