Hi, just wanted to know if any of you could recommend any type of program to hook my husband up with when he gets out that can assist him with counseling or finding a job. I know about Project Rio, but does anyone have any other suggestions???? We're in Texas...thought this could be helpful for others also.
Thanks
Ashley

If he's in on any type of controlled substance case or anything of that nature, you can try the Texas Rehabilitation Commission. I don't know if they still help with stuff like that, but they used to. All you had to do was meet with a caseworker, and tell them about your "problem", then tell them you wanted a new life. They used to do all sorts of stuff, like pay for vocational classes, and job placements. I don't know if they still do, but it's worth a shot. You can try temp agencies too. Just call and see if they place ex-offenders. Before my man caught this case, I would stop by every place that had a help wanted/now hiring sign. I would explain that he was a non violent offender, and just needed a break. As you can imagine, some people turned their noses up, but some people were very helpful. Also, I would suggest you get hooked up with the local church of your choice. Not only will it offer spirtual supprt to him, but you may come in contact with somebody who knows somebody. Keep the faith, there will be alot of days that you'll need to be his backbone.
God Bless

I FOUND THIS IN A GOOGLE SEARCH AND IT WAS FROM PTO... GO FIGURE!
Note: "Brothers In White" is so called because of the white uniforms Texas residents must wear.
Can you imagine your loved one getting out of prison and having a network of over 50,000 men to help him lead a normal and prosperous life? A new movement called "Brothers In White" is already taking off in many Units across the State. This non-profit organization (501c3) is based on a Christian foundation and is totally reliant on one ex-prisoner helping another. Just as one recovering alcoholic helps another to stay sober, BIW offers one-on-one support for each other beginning inside the Units, but most importantly, following their release. BIW Fellowship halls will be opening throughout the State allowing ex-prisoners to help each other succeed in society by pooling their resources. As a Christian-based organization, we offer 7 Tenets, or "truths" taken directly from the bible. But your loved one does not have to be Christian to get involved. Just an open mind and heart. It must be pointed out that there is no program in the State right now (other than BIW) that is made up entirely of prisoners and ex-prisoners dependent upon each other to succeed and lead normal and productive lives. Yes, there are dozens of current organizations that offer ex-prisoners help in many areas. Unfortunately, many men walking out of the gates of Huntsville are unaware of these programs. BIW will have a Christian sponsor (ex-prisoner) at those gates waiting to help him. This sponsor will be well trained in the many areas of help already available to the ex-prisoner including Project RIO, substance abuse centers, job opportunities, aftercare facilities, halfway houses, housing subsidies and ex-prisoner friendly churches in his area.
Eventually, as more members get out, the organization will grow accordingly. Since starting this program last month, I am already receiving letters from residents currently housed in Units all over the State of Texas. They are eager to become "Brothers In White" and become part of a self-help movement that will make them feel “wanted” in society. No, it is not "Us helping Them"...it is "Them helping Themselves" to succeed and prosper! The concept and creation of Brothers In White belongs to Michael Todd Reese # 1172674 at the Price Daniel Unit. He says “if the Lord wishes something to be built, it WILL be built”. He has no fears of the future growth of this program, as it is not his. It belongs to Jesus and every single one of our Brothers In White If you would like more information on how to get your Texas Loved One involved, please write to:
