TOPEKA, Kan. -- Kansas prison officials say the state has no flu vaccine for its 9,200 inmates.

Department of Corrections spokesman Bill Miskell says officials hope to learn later this week whether the state will get some.

He says prison officials gave about 5,500 flu shots to inmates and employees last year.

Miskell says no inmates have died from the flu in recent memory, but officials are concerned the disease might spread quickly in prisons.

Flu vaccine is short nationwide because a company that usually makes half the nation's supply won't provide any because of problems at its plant in Britain.

Prison officials in Missouri say they expect to get some flu vaccine and will give it only to inmates who are elderly or have chronic medical conditions.
