View Full Version : Garza West Prison in Beeville, Tx. Anyone know something?
dag62 10-19-2004, 07:03 PM My nephew was transferred yesterday (Monday) from our county jail to the Garza West Unit in Beeville, TX. I don't know a thing about this (with the exception of a post I read earlier about spiders and rats!). I would appreciate any information on this unit that I can get. I was also wondering if this unit an Intake Facility and if so, how long can he remain there? We are about an hour away from Beeville, so it would be awesome if he stayed there, but from everything I've read, it is highly unlikely. Anyway, thanks in advance for any information! :)

Grace1 10-20-2004, 09:42 AM mMy guy is at Garza and has not really said much about it, he seems relieved to be out of county, there is more to do at Garza as far as making time go faster, working and such. He is also taking a class while he is there and stays pretty busy. He says people with longer sentences tend to stay there longer but most of the people are moved in and out pretty quickly.
Trulykath 10-20-2004, 10:10 AM Garza has a lot of traffic going through it. Once past diagnostics/intake, anyone else coming through this unit do not usually stay there long...It's usually a stop on the way to someplace else. They can keep an inmate in a transfer facility up to 2 years, but you usually don't see people stay at Garza West long, sometimes, they only move down the street to Garza East.

dag62 10-20-2004, 10:20 AM My nephew was sentenced to 10 years, so maybe he will be kept there a little longer. Your e-mail gives me some hope that things aren't all bad. We did tell him to get involved with as much as possible as far as working and taking classes. I will know more once we get to see him. How long did it take before you were able to see him for the first time?

Grace1 10-20-2004, 10:27 AM I went down to see him less than 3 weeks after he was transferred. They can have visitors once they turn in there visitors list. I am going again this weekend. I will call the unit on Friday to verify he can have visitors and that he is going to be there over the weekend. They are actually real polite and professional on the phone. I am sure I will eventually run into someone that isn't but as pf yet everyone has been very nice. I am driving from houston, where are you?
dag62 10-20-2004, 08:00 PM Cool, I'm hoping we can see my nephew this weekend. He told us he would tur in his visitors list as soon as he got it. He was armed with all the information on each of us as far as birthdates and addresses. I'll call Friday to see if he is allowed visitors this weekend. We'll be coming from Corpus, so it won't be a far drive at all which is why I hope he stays there as long as possible. And from what you're telling me, it sounds like it isn't too bad of a place, so I hope he is going to be okay. Thanks so much for all the good information you've given me Grace. :-)
dag62 10-20-2004, 08:03 PM A friend of ours told us her brother-in-law stayed in Beeville for about 7 years, but she didn't know which unit. It must've been Garza East. If they move him down the road, that'll work, too. We just want him to end up in a "good" unit...as good as a prison can get anyway. Thanks for your input, Kathy!

olmos2 09-07-2009, 12:50 PM Needing information on Garza West. My friend has just been moved there. Never visited anyone in jail and would like to know what to expect. He has only been there for 2 weeks will he be allowed visitors?

My husband is in Garza West. Its a transfer unit, so once they are through with intake (about 90 days) they are normally transferred. But some inmates stay there up to 2 years. Your friend would probably be able to receive visits after 30 days. But you must be on his visitation list and your EXACT name and address must correspond with what he put on his visitation list. I would call the unit though, to see if your on his list and when he can start having visitors. You CANT have contact visits with him unless your a relative, spouse, or have a child with him. You could always call the Senior Warden at Garza which is Diana Kukua and ask to be approved for contact visits. They normally only approve non-relative visits if the family is unable to visit. Garza West's phone number is 361-358-9890. They should help you a little more.
In regards to what to expect when visiting your friend- since your not a relative you will have visits behind a glass window with a speaker thing you have to press your ear to in order to hear him because its so loud in the room. You must bring ID. Drivers license will be fine. You must dress very modest, no tank tops, shorts, open toed toes, etc. I would bring an extra pair of clothes and leave them in the car just in case they wont let you in with what you have on. You can ONLY bring in a small coin purse with up to $20 in quarters to purchase snacks during visitation, and your drivers license and keys need to be put in a clear plastic zip-lock bag. And be prepared to WAIT WAIT WAIT!!!! Hope this helps, you can pm me if you need additional information.

dresgirl 10-26-2009, 10:39 PM how do you get a contact visit if you have a child with an inmate. he is not on the birth certificate because he was in jail at that time also. and we never had the bc revised because we were not planning on him going back - was just gonna wait until our son started school
