Hi all, Can anyone explain to me what Federal Parole is all about? My man, who's serving time at Miami FCI told me that he will have three years of paper, which I think he said means parole. What restrictions will he be under. Can he do interstate travel? Does he need a sponsor, like someone to live with, once he gets out. Will he go to a halfway house? He's in for a drug conviction and is a recovering addict.
Any input would be much appreciated.
Peace

Parole is a "conditional release of a prisoner whose sentence has not expired.
Federal parole was abolished, there are a few "old law" prisoners left inside the federal prison system who are still elligible for federal parole.
The 3 years, is a "supervised release" also considered a probation period. Not sure the direct terms for this...but it is not parole. We have some around that may be familiar with this...hopefully they can better answer this for you. Travel is allowed with approval.
Here is an something from the BOP site, written in 2001, that speaks of the end of parole.... "About the Federal Bureau of Prisons"
http://www.bop.gov/ipapg/ipaabout.pdf
page 3, 2nd paragraph...
The 1980's brought a significant increase in the number of Federal inmates -- the results of Federal law enforcement efforts and new legislation that dramatically altered sentencing in the Federal criminal justice system. Most of the Bureau's growth since mid-1980's has been the result of the Sentencing Reform Act of 1984 (which established determinate sentencing, abolished parole, and reduced good time) and mandatory minimum sentences enacted in 1986, 1988, and 1999.
