View Full Version : Visitation Approval
 :yay:  Just got the papers... I am approved to visit my cuz at Dick Conner!
Gosh, he sounds SO grateful. He's never had a visit before. Does that break ones heart or what?:(
Can't even imagine 4 years in prison w/o a visit. He was sure to tell me to bring quarters for the FOOD!
Now to get the logistics down for the visit. Seems I have to be there like 8:00 for the 9:00 visit.
I am wearing a long skirt suit (black suede) and high boots, NOT high heel...same thing I would wear for showing my dogs at a big event, or to meetings with clients, etc. Nothing daring or revealing. Very conservative. Will prolly be way too "dressed" for the visit, but these are the type clothes I always wear for travel.
Any hints or tales of visitation would be welcomed!!!
Kind of scared, truth be told.

freckledgrl 10-16-2004, 04:50 PM Woo Hoo!! Congrats, lis! I don't know Dick Conner rules but I can tell ya some about the first visit. It's going to be overwhelming and probably scary at first. Just keep in mind that all the other people there visiting went though this too. Watch what the people before you do and don't be afraid to ask if you have questions. I've walked new visitors to the visiting room before at my guys prison and answered many questions....and it's never been an inconveinience to me.
Even though the surroundings may seem horrible to you realize that he's *used* to it and that this is probably going to be his best day since going in. Just accept all that and have a great time!
Things to find out from the Conner Ladies or call the jail and ask....
How many keys can you bring with you? At Lawton we can only bring in one car key and it can't be on a key ring.
Do quarters have to be unrolled and in a clear bag (ziploc baggie works) and how much can you bring in?
Do they have lockers for your purse or do you need to leave it in your car?
It's starting to get rainy and cold...can you wear a jacket in?
That's all I can think of.....have fun, and congrats again!!!
ldysirois 10-16-2004, 09:41 PM Wonderful Liz remember I'm here and my offer still stand's PM when you need a ride.
Have you still got my number? if not let me know! How long are the visit's there 2 hours 3 hours? do they go from 9 - ? you might want to fined that out so you may not have to fly at the butt crack of dawn,LOL Hugs
freckledgrl 10-16-2004, 10:12 PM That's a good one to ask too, ldy! And can I just add that I love the phrase "butt crack of dawn" :D
ldysirois 10-17-2004, 12:45 PM Yea, kinda just put it out there! LOL, guess I was in a mood last night!
Hahaha! butt crack of dawn! rotfllol
I am calling the prison Monday to make sure of what's what, and try to get travel plans in order.
My husband said he would drive me, but I don't think THAT'S gonna work...looong drive.
I will PM you ldy, as soon as I call the prison and find out what's what.
(Did everyone get the short instruction paper on the dress code? No mention of underwire bras on it, yet I have heard of people setting the scanner off from them.)
Wanna make SURE I understand EVERYTHING, and will also bring x-tra clothes, I think.
Gosh, I can't believe how happy he is to get a visitor. Doesn't seem anyone should be so happy about such a small thing? Too sad...

freckledgrl 10-17-2004, 11:29 PM The extra clothes is a great idea! I've been visiting at Lawton for a year and a half now and I *still* bring an extra set...and I know where the nearest Dollar store is to the prison just in case (and yep, I've had to use it...lol).
I never got the visitor rules so I just called and asked the basics and then learned from there. One major thing that I wouldn't have thought about is no open toed shoes. I've seen more people sent away because of that rule than any other clothing rule. The heel can be open (like slides or mules) but you gotta cover those tootsies up for some reason :D

this is the link to the basic rules of conduct

and this is the link to the basic dress code
please remember though that each prison is slightly different so its best to call and ask questions first and definately the change of clothes jeans and a normal t shirt is always a safe bet as well. Relax no matter what you are dressed like he is going to be happy to just have a visit. Especially since he has been in 4 years without one.
Beba's Mom 10-27-2004, 05:06 AM I'm sure all facilities have their own rules but I recently came from NY to OK to visit my daughter at Mabel Bassett. I was told I couldn't wear solid color tops of red, black, grey, white, dark blue - supposedly all gang colors. My other dau and I wore printed tops and they were fine. A lot depends upon the guards on duty and what they each allow. (Wrong, but that's a fact) I was allowed to bring in $10. per person. I had my grandson (1 yrs old), my 11 yo dau and I was only allowed $20. I did hear beforehand that it could be $15 per person but on the first day the guards made us put some $$ back in to my car. The 2nd day they never counted my $$ so I could have "gotten away with" more $$ but I didn't try. I was permitted dollar bills but I did see many coming in with quarters in zip lock bags. The vending machine food isn't bad at all - I was quite surprised. You might want to eat before you go there though so you can spend most of the $$ on him. It's a MAJOR TREAT for them to choose a food and they never get anything as good as vending machine food. :) Definitely no open toe shoes and nothing sexy or revealing. The seats are not comfortable by the way - wooden round discs attached to tables. The prison my older daughter is at was actually quite nice and not uncomfortable to my 11 year old AT ALL. We weren't x-ray scanned but that may have been becasue I am disabled and in a handicapped scooter. We WERE patted down - including the baby. Females pat females down, males pat males down. It ISN'T offensive in any way. Hope something here helped.
Hopefully you'll be able to connect with someone here that visits the same facility and "knows the ropes".

ldysirois 11-14-2004, 06:33 PM Just a update for Liz, Well she made her visit, we were able to meet and have a short BUT great time together! She's a NUT!! I was just disappointed BECAUSE the prison didn't tell her she could have got a extended visit for she came to OKlahoma from Tx.But I guess thats DOC again! Conners just gave the 2 hour thing! DORKS!
freckledgrl 11-14-2004, 07:13 PM Yeah for lis!!! And I've always thought she's a nut :D
OH! What a WONDERFUL visit! Thanks to ldy for ALL she did, even checking out the length of the visit and coming back for me on time. She knew about the short visit before *I* did!
She's a wild woman! LOL! TOOO much fun, and just GOOD people!
SOOOOOO good to see my baby cousin - and ya know, I thought he'd be interested in all the food, but he just wanted to TALK. Ate very little, just needed to talk more than anything.
I'm happy to announce that he's coming down to Texas, if we can get him here, and the prison people co-operate. We're bringing him HOME here to FAMILY, and it's a big one, and a formidable force!
The news isn't good about his mom, so prayers are welcomed for her...
