View Full Version : I was wondering (dumb random thought!)
impoohbearsgirl 10-15-2004, 09:36 AM Okay, I don't know why this crossed my mind and its not like I'm thinking of doing this - I just was wondering something and wanted to see if anyone ever heard of this happening.
Ya know people would smoke cigs their entire lives, get cancer, then sue the cig manufacturers and reap millions.
Well, has anyone ever held Budweiser, Coors, Winery's, or other "spirit" companies liable for the demise of their life, the loss of their loved ones?
Also, they call alcohol "spirits" because that's what it destroys. I don't know what made me think of this but I can honestly say I've never heard of a case and wondered if anyone had.
Thanks
Retired-18 10-15-2004, 10:00 AM Ya know, poo, I've never thought of it, but now that you mention it!!! LOL. I think these companies do have a certain amount of responsibility and my pet peeve is the advertising. When my husband first joined AA it seemed like every time we would turn on the TV there would be a beer commercial, very helpful to someone newly in recovery, ya know. I personally think alcohol should be illegal, but who listens to me.
It has been done, unsuccessfully. I guess that is why there aren't more lawsuits.

jessnkat 10-15-2004, 10:27 AM I've never heard of a lawsuit like that but I'm sure it's been done - interesting because people sue companies for the stupidest things. Like the woman who spilled her McDonald's coffee on herself and sued because it was HOT! Isn't coffee SUPPOSED to be hot?? Oh, and the man who sued McDonald's because he was fat! And what about the woman shopping for furniture where there was a child running wild around the store and knocked her down and injured her and it turns out it was HER child - and she sue the store and was granted over a million (I think) by a jury! Where do they actually find 12 people to serve on a jury who would vote that way????????????? Who are these people???????/
Retired-18 10-15-2004, 10:32 AM LOL, Kat! I'm suing Bud because I got drunk and hit a tree. Think they'd go for it? Nah. Nice thought though. Not hitting a tree, suing Bud.
EclipseBlue101 10-15-2004, 10:35 AM I believe the right people at the right time had the money to pursue this issue...And they went for it...
Do you really think the average person could go to these lengths.......??????????
I do believe companies put addictive things in their products........even now....believe it or not companies are putting addictive things in food products  to get them addicted to Name Brand weight loss products.............
Just a thought to think about!!!
impoohbearsgirl 10-15-2004, 11:14 AM But what's the difference between getting "liver disease" from drinking and "cancer of the lung" from smoking? I mean, those smokers had viable lawsuits, why not drinkers?
I'm gonna research this, I'm facinated :lol
impoohbearsgirl 10-15-2004, 11:20 AM Oh, and I attend outpatient and they showed a video to us about alcohol commercials and I had to sit there for a frigging HOUR watching that and when the movie was over, the counselor asked what we though...My comment literally was "Is it MILLER Time!"
the class cracked up but my comment to them was "Uh, why are you showing me this.....? I'm here to learn how to not drink and you just showed me a bunch of T&A, ice cold beers and people that look HAPPY! I wanna go be HAPPY and I know that first drink will make that a reality!" I literally left there wanting to DRINK!
UG, so frustrating
Retired-18 10-15-2004, 11:24 AM That's what I mean, pooh. I don't have a drinking problem and I want a beer after those commercials. It makes me mad to tell you the truth, because I really believe it makes it hard on the ones who are in recovery and when my hon and I talked about this he told me the same thing. Let me know what you find out, I would be interested in hearing it.
