My brother self surrendered in Terre Haute one week ago. We haven't gotten a call or any word from him. How long does it take before he can make contact with us. I called the prison but they were short and wouldn't talk.

How long until he can call? How long will it take before we can visit, roughly?

The lawyer did not brief us on what to expect and without hearing from him we are losing sleep. My mom is starting to lose it.

Is Terre Haute his final designated place? If so, he probably has to get the numbers approved for his phone list and purchase envelopes and stamps and stuff in the commissary in order to write. I expect you'll hear from him fairly soon. You'll have to be approved for his visiting list before you can visit. He can let you know about that when you hear from him. Zelda

Immediate family can visit right away, generally you just show up. At least that is what my friend's mom and dad did and it was no problem. However, if you are more distantly related or just a friend you will have to wait to get approved. For me that was close to 4 weeks and I have a clean record. If you don't have a clean record it will take longer to get approved, if at all.

As for phone, my friend went in last June and it took a full two weeks to get the phone list approved.

My boyfriend is at Terre haute Camp and I didn't get a phone call for about a month after he got there. He did write me within about 2 weeks though. That's if he's at the camp. And my visits started after about 2 months. He had to send me a form to fill out to get on his visiting list. If your immediate family though I think visits start right away.Hope that helps.

Visits can start right away if you are immediate family AND are listed in the PSI. But I would advise calling the counselor before driving a long ways to visit, to make sure you're on his approved visiting list because sometimes the info doesn't get from the PSI to the list. Zelda
