JAIL GETS MAKEOVER

By DAN MANGAN

October 3, 2004 -- ALDERSON, W.Va. — The federal lockup Martha Stewart will call home for the next five months is getting a makeover just in time for domestic diva's arrival this week.
"They got satellite TV [installed] in there, just this week — just in time," said a man whose wife is incarcerated at the Alderson prison camp, a minimum-security facility in rural West Virginia known as "Camp Cupcake."

The new TV hookup will give inmates access to hundreds of channels — far more than they have now.

The man, who did not want to be identified, said more than 1,000 women prisoners are abuzz because Martha is coming and that an extra doctor's assistant and several nurses have just been added to the staff at Alderson, which like other federal prisons has a reputation for haphazard medical care.

"If she gets sick and they don't treat her right, they're messing with big money, and there will be hell to pay," the man said.

Stewart, who is due to arrive Friday, could be assigned to sleep in a "cottage," a residence with fewer inmates and private bedrooms, instead of in one of the "ranges" or open dormitories where 90 or more prisoners sleep in bunk beds.

Relatives of prisoners say another change has been the removal of Avon cosmetic products from the commissary.

The prison staff has also ordered a clean-up on a scale worthy of Martha Stewart.

"They said that last week they started this massive clean-up," the source said. "[They were] cleaning out the corners with toothbrushes."

Nevertheless, life at Alderson, situated on 105 acres on the Greenbrier River, is no picnic.

While violence between prisoners is rare, one group that Stewart would be wise to steer clear of are "The D.C.'s" — women from Washington, D.C., whose city's criminal cases are handled in federal courts.

Relatives of prisoners have said "D.C." inmates tend to be the camp's biggest troublemakers.

Another thing that Stewart certainly will witness in Alderson is that there is "a lot of lesbian stuff in there," said another man, who has a relative incarcerated at the camp

This is really rather sad. Why NOW? What, the women in there now weren't WORTHY of humane treatment? This just shows the priorities of our Federal System. I'm glad the changes are coming forth, but I would like to now see this in ALL the Federal prisons. And they really have NO excuse on why they can do it for one but not the others.

I agree with Stacy why are they doing this now? I think this is so unfair, that those women in there have to do all of this work, because you know they are the ones that are having to clean this. It just really goes to show that once someone famous is charged with something BOOM we must accomodate them, and not accomodate like they do for the regular people who we call our loved ones...jeesh what is next, private bathrooms

She should be treated like everyone else..........I know she has money......but this is wrong......and 5 month. If it would have been me. I would have gotten life.

I say treat her the same as our love ones are treated...........

First of all, its not a jail, its a prison, and a camp at that! :)

Secondly, the grounds at Alderson have always been well maintained by the inmate landscaping and painting crews, and this time of year, the new commits are kept busy keeping the leaves raked up. That's nothing new.

The cosmetics are routinely rotated on comissary. There was Covergirl, Loreal, and Avon in the 18 months I was there. I am glad to hear additional medical help has been added; maybe sickcall will improve for all the inmates. Yeah, right! :)

"A lot of lesbian stuff"? Well, imagine that! :)

I would not be shocked if she buys her own cell, I'm sure the jail would not pass up a few $$$. Kinda sad everyone lives in hell then here comes Martha and bam there are changes made... Sad
