INDUSTRIES: Badger State Industries: Wood Furniture
EDUCATION: Vocational Technical Adult Education Certified/Diploma Granting Programs: Auto Body and Paint Technician, Automotive Maintenance Technician, Brick laying/Masonry, Cabinet making/Millwork, Custodial Services, Mechanical and Computer Drafting, Machine Tool Techniques, Refrigeration Servicing, Power Products Technician, Production Welding. Certificate Programs: Badger State Industries training for FLCI Wood Industries and General Metals. FLCI also offers a variety of academic educational programs including Adult Basic Education, HSED preparation and computer office applications. Approximately 50 percent of medium security inmates are involved in either full or part time educational programming.
MINIMUM SECURITY OPPORTUNITIES: Inmates housed in the minimum security compound are offered a wide range of employment opportunities. FLCI provides inmate workers to a variety of DOC work sites throughout the area, including the Waupun State Farm, Waupun Central Warehouse, Central Generating Plant and the Industries Distribution Center. FLCI has three community project crews that offer assistance to local, county and state governments and non-profit organizations to accomplish work projects they might not otherwise be able to complete. Some of the organizations FLCI has ongoing project relationships with are the Town of Fox Lake, Department of Natural Resources, American Red Cross, and the City of Beaver Dam. Work release opportunities are available in a wide range of employment settings in the surrounding areas. Approximately 75-100 inmates are involved in the work release program and contribute back to the DOC for room, board and transportation expenses. Additionally, they pay state and federal taxes and work towards completing other personal obligations, such as child support and restitution.
OTHER: FLCI offers a wide range of programming choices to meet the needs of a varied inmate population. Specialized treatment groups, cultural awareness groups and community service organizations are some of the choices available to inmates.
SPECIAL HISTORICAL NOTES AND OTHER INSTITUTIONAL INFORMATION
The Fox Lake Correctional Institution in Dodge County is the first medium security institution in the United States managed under a responsible living no pass system concept. FLCI is located about nine miles west of the city of Waupun. The institution is situated on an 85 acre plot of land surrounded by approximately 1200 acres owned by the State of Wisconsin. The structure consists of an Entrance Facility/Armory, Administration Building, Chapel, Food Service/Stores Building, Health Services and Academic Education Building, Nine Housing Units, Recreation Building, Garage, Industries and Vocational Shops Building. Six of the Housing Units are designed for 96 single rooms, but those units currently have 52 rooms doubled to meet the population demands. Inmate rooms have regular doors and windows. Inmates are permitted scheduled movement within the institution and rules are intended to help individuals live together in an orderly manner.
