Hi all

I did not know where to post this but thought maybe someone here could answer a question for me. My son is in prison well he is a acholic drank hard booze for a long time. At the time of his arrest he was rail thin I don't think he was eating properly and the booze was killing him. He is 6'2 went in at about 160 lbs he has gained in 10 months 70 lbs! ON Prison food! It's all just about landed in his belly. I am concerned about this like thinking this is a medical condition maybe I don't know has anyone been through this or had it happen to them?

By not eating, you cause your body to go into "starvation mode". You metabolism slows way down and your body hangs onto every bit of fat it can absorb. If your son was not eating properly before, this is probably what happened. His body is trying to absorb as much fat as it can in case he goes back into "starvation mode" again. Does that makde sense?

My guy did the same thing...wasn't a drinker, it was crack cocaine. within about 10 months he had gained around 60 lds, like you said all in the belly...

People who abuse drugs and alcohol generally do not eat properly. They miss out on a whole bunch of nutrients. In addition alcohol an drugs mess up the way that nutrients are metabolized in the body. When folks are no longer using and begin to eat a better balanced diet they will gain weight. Even though prison food is no treat, they do try to make it nutritionally balanced. This is probably what is happening.

I work in detox--and its' normal. The same thing happened with my ex who is in now. He is slowly starting to loose it now because after almost a yr of being in the depression is setting in. Good luck.

Thank you this is what I thought and am hoping it will balance out somewhat. He is looking like he's ready to give birth. Thanks for the responses.
