BOISE -- State Department of Correction Director Tom Beauclair says lighter sentencing guidelines need to be considered as a way to lower the number of inmates in Idaho's prisons.
Beauclair's remarks were given in Boise Wednesday to the state Board of Corrections and top department staff.
They are similar to statements the director made to the state's budget writing committee when it met Tuesday in Saint Anthony.
Beauclair says changing sentencing guidelines is only a part of the solution. His department will also have to keep finding efficiencies within the current system.
Prison occupancy rates shot up this year more than seven percent between January and June. There are now 6,300 inmates in Idaho prisons.
