I would appreciate any information anyone can give about serving time in a halfway house. How much freedom do you have there? Are you allowed to leave there at all besides when you go to work? Can you have your own vehicle there? Can you have visitors there?

There are currently precious few direct commitments to half-way houses. Is this what you are referring to, or the time at the end of a sentence of imprisonment?

Howard,

I was referring to placement in a halfway house at the end of a term of imprisonment. I've read somewhere that they are considering making inmates eligible for halfway house placement sooner than 6 months short of the termination of imprisonment.

I was also told that once you had a job and paid a certain amount of money (to the halfway house??) you would then be allowed "passes" to leave the halfway house, at first, for a few hours and then eventually weekend passes.

Also, is it true that with a job, good behavior, etc. a person could be eligible to finish the remainder of their sentence on "house arrest" instead of in the halfway house.

Does this sound realisitc? Any other input or info on the topic?

As far as the 6months/10% for CCC placement on the "back-end" of the sentence, this is an area currently experiencing much litigation. The only place where the issue is somewhat settled is in the 1st Circuit.

Most CCCs require a job and a 25% subsistence payment for weekend passes. Typically once this is done, the last 50% of the CCC placement is done in home confinement. However, it depends greatly on timing, staff's willingness to process the paperwork, proximity to the approved resudence, etc.

I am currently living in a halfway house awaiting trial. I checked out several houses before choosing the one I am at now. Most all of them, of course, require you to become employed within a certain period of time after you move in. Rent is usually paid by the week and a small fee required upon admission. I chose the residence I am in now because of the fact that no fees were due upon admission. Here they allow you two weeks to find a job and then two more weeks to make your first payment and make arrangements for payment in arrears. The first week you are on the "Buddy System" and must have another resident with you anytime you leave the house unless you are going to work or an NA/AA meeting. After 7 days you may leave at anytime on your own, but you must sign in and out and put down where you will be going. There are different levels you move through here and with each level you gain more freedom. Level 2 allows you to acquire a 24 hour pass, level 3 a 48 hour pass, and so on. You must provide your own transportation. You may not begin a relationship with a member of the opposite sex, but is OK if you were in a relationship prior to coming here. The rules are pretty simple. Any other info you would like on this, just let me know. Hope this helps.

My husband has been in halfway house after serving a prison term in a new york city CCM. He was only allowed to leave to look for work and to work. His last day at the halfway house is today. He will be home tomorrow. But i do know that he was not granted to any time at home because it took him a while to get a job.

If he would have started working right away they would have given him

after two paystubs

1st week - 12 hour pass
2nd week- 24 hour pass
3rd- weekend passes

Until he was able to be on home confinement.
He cannot have or even drive a car or be in someones car.
They allow you to come out for church on sundays about two or three hours
He could go out to wash clothes, etc.

Once working you have to give 25% of your pay check to them even while on home confinement.

My husband only had two months of halfway house but if you are to do more this is what you can expect.

If there are any more questions feel free to PM me.

Good luck!

The federal halfway house I was in did allow you to keep your car there and to drive. You also had 6 hours of free time per week to go where you wanted to go. There were also washers and dryers on the premises.

From what I have heard from other people I have known that have been in halfway house, they are all run a little bit differently. For me, it sure beat prison!!

Hello... My father just stared an 18 month sentence at Devens. If and when he is allowed an early release at a halfway house, does he get to choose? We are from southern NY close to the city. Thanks for your help

Mine is in a Federal HWH- there is no choosing, it's the only one around! The rules there are: 25% of the gross, NO DRIVING, no traveling in a car with other inmates, but I can drive him around. I took him job hunting until he found one, now I give him a ride to work when the weather is bad if my own work schedule permits; he got an 8 hour pass for Thanksgiving,(he had to call from the home phone twice and they also called to verify he was there), he got 10 hour passes on Sat. and Sunday (he's been there since the end of Sept.), and he gets out Dec. 9th. I know they do progress to weekend passes and home confinement, but he won't be there that long. They are ALL a little different- and so are the case managers in the same facility! (Also, they have laundry facilities and after about a month they can go for a one hour "walk" each evening, which has potential since they are in downtown Las Vegas, but no casinos or bars allowed!!!)

My husband is fortunate enough to have an editing job that is being held for him. He works for a company, but he does all of his work from our home, where his equipment is - does anyone know the Halfway House policies on working from home? And is there a cap to the 25% you pay the halfway house? He will only be there 13 days, then start 5 months home confinement. Would they ever go directly to home confinement for so short a sentence? Obviously that's what we're hoping for, but we have no idea.

That's interesting. It's such a beaurocracy- at my guy's HWH they are physicaly moving to a new facilty tomorrow- wouldn't you think they would go ahead and release the ones who have only a few days left just to make it easier on everyone, themselves included? But NOOOO!!! So your hubby may have to max out his 13 day sentence!! As for the job, it would not surprise me in the least if they let him go to work for 8 hours each day (at home) and then made him report back. Bear in mind that they have to approve his employment. If they decide that it's too troublesome to monitor him there, he may have to flip burgers for a couple of weeks!! Here's hoping he gets assigned a sane case manager!
