View Full Version : My sister died Sept. 3 at Carswell
donnahoy 09-18-2004, 04:54 PM My sister had been at Alderson; diagnosed with cancer and transferred to Carswell at end of April. We immediately filed for compassionate release.
The release was approved August 6 and she got home August 7.
She died of the cancer on Sept. 3.
Thanks to all of you for your support and compassion.
I just hope the Compassionate Release policy will be changed for future inmates;
my sister should have been released when she was diagnosed with terminal cancer.
It took over 3 months for the BOP to review our request and their records.
She had not had cancer before -- was diagnosed while incarcerated.
She was moved 1200 miles away from her family to Carswell.
We had to drive the distance on the weekends to visit her.
Such a waste!!!
It was inhumane to do this to a 64 year old first time offender who had a family who was willing and able to take care of her.
Thanks again.

qwerty 09-18-2004, 04:59 PM What an ordeal for all of you... you are right, it was ridiculous to put you through all that.
I'm sorry for your loss. :(
donnahoy 09-18-2004, 05:02 PM Thanks for your concern.
It was so irrational for BOP to keep her.
What an ordeal for all of you... you are right, it was ridiculous to put you through all that.

hopeless55 09-18-2004, 06:27 PM All of our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
God calls us home form all places and at all times and ages.
Your sister was loved by you and our Lord. she will await your return to her in Heaven.
She was lucky to be loved by you. So many of our inmate population are lost and cast adrift with no one to care, no one to celebrate their lives let alone their deaths.
Your sister smiles upon you and her family.
dazzler 09-18-2004, 06:38 PM Donna - I know the pain of losing a sister...mine died in December of brain cancer...fortunately I was able to have a year with her after diagnosis...but we can carry them in our hearts forever...you'll be in my prayers....

What a wonderful thing you did for your sister. She was able to die a free woman.
Bless you, and my thoughts will be with you and your family.

Zelda50 09-18-2004, 10:03 PM I'm sorry for your loss and what you had to go through to get her released. I had a close friend who experienced the same thing. She was diagnosed with cancer while in federal prison. She was ill for a long while in prison. The BOP waited until a month before she died to release her to be with her teen daughter and husband. It was good she was free for even that short time but something really needs to be done about the "compassionate release" policies of the BOP!! Zelda

come_home_soon 09-18-2004, 10:25 PM I am so sorry to hear of you and your families loss. Cancer is a harsh silent attacker that takes to many people before their time. My aunt has only 2 wks if we are lucky. I say we b/c she is in so much pain and I don't think alot of people know the half of it. Luckily her 1st grandchild was born September 10, 2004, so that is all she prayed to live for. I thought about reading these short words at my Aunt's funeral, I hope they can help a little on your side too (I changed some of the words to recriprocate you her). While I watch her health fade I am going through all the test with an Oncologist now b/c I may also have cancer.
ONLY THE BEST •~~
A Heart of Gold stopped beating,
Two shining eyes at rest.
God broke your hearts to prove
He only takes The Best.
God knows she had to leave us,
But she did not go alone ~
For part of you went with you,
The day He took her Home.
To some they may forget
To others it may just the pass.
But to you who loved and lost her,
know her memory will always forever last

point of light 09-20-2004, 05:03 PM Many prayers for understanding and possible forgiveness....The BOP is cruel, even evil at times. Rise above the cruelty and stay in the love and compassion that you and your family shared with your sister. I'm so sorry....
