My penpal's cellie wants to contact the media and asked me for addresses. Since this is in regard to a high profile case and he wants to do it without authorities finding out about it, do you guys have any suggestions? I had thought about giving him my cell phone #. What AZ papers would be receptive to contacting the inmate? Should I contact the media for him--have him write me a letter I could forward?

If hes in an AZ prison he wont be able to call you unless you are approved on his list. Then you need a landline. I dont think your going to get around anyone finding out, unless you go the phone route and even then seriously, they record the calls!

I'd be very very careful if I were him before talking to the media. It could cause him major problems and get in very deep over his head. Do you know why he's wanting to talk to the media?

I'm afraid if I say it will reveal too much. It would be a big story.

I know I was called by another inmate before I was on his list. Don't they have phone cards now so they can call a cell phone? Wonder if I can be on more than one inmate's phone list if I am on another's visiting list.

I dont think so, not in AZ. I am pretty sure they have to have the person on their list before they can call. I know I have not been able to have phone contact with myguy in 3 years because I am not on his list.

In AZ you have to be on his phone list to get calls, and they can not call a cell phone, the phone disconnects if you try to forward it most times too..
you need to be on the persons visitor list and then you are added to the phone list.. spencersgirl is correct you need a landline
be careful getting into this. your best bet is to send him addresses and/or have him write a letter to be forwarded . they can not stop them talking to the press, look at the hostage guys who held press conferences but press must request interviews etc through the prison system
there are rules for contacting the media you can read them on the adoc site
I am not sure about how many peoples list you can be on,, I believe it is just one persons at a time unless they are family

I used to have a friend call me from Yuma all the time before I was on his list and he called my cell phone. My husband would freak if I gave someone my home phone and started getting collect calls.

Forwarding a letter seems to sound like the best route. I just know there is a trial soon and he wants to contact the media as soon as possible. I really want to see this story get picked up because it could impact the prison overcrowding and conditions.

I am aware of the media policy, but at this prison, a letter addressed to the media would be conventiently lost or this guy would be retaliated against.

I was hoping someone would know a specific reporter I could contact. I'm in Colorado so I am not familiar with the good investigative reporters.

I appreciate everyone's concern. Thanks.

maybe if you are on his visiting list you can go visit him and find out what he wants the media to know then you could contact them for him. that way he wont get stopped int he process.

you can also do a google search for television stations in AZ ... there are many, channel 3, 5 etc.. and email them .. just do a search and you will see that there are many stations to easily correspond with.. also you can email PLN ( prison legal news) for ideas and legal rights to deal with this .. just use that search engine as that is what I do as I am not in AZ but my guy is . as he pointed out I know more of his state and the policies then he does lol

I am in Arizona and the policies here are you are only allowed to be on one visitation list at a time unless it is imediate family. You are not allowed to call cell phones however, you can forward calls to a cell phone. If you are worried about your husband finding out then that will not work because the the call will be billed to your homephone. Personally I dont think there is one reporter who isn't out for themselves, so as far as finding one that would want the story Im sure you could find several, they would have a hard time finding out any information without the autorieties finding out though. I don't know which prison he is at, but since the January hostage situation the prisons here have tightened thier securiety and become even more strict on policies.
