View Full Version : Hartz Flea collars for dogs
Niightdrmr 09-12-2004, 09:08 PM Has anyone ever had any problems with these flea collars??? I bought one Friday night and put it on my dog Saturday afternoon around noon.... well today (sunday) my dog hasnt been able to hold ANY food down...he was fine Friday and I wasnt home most of the day Saturday after putting it on him... I just noticed today that he isnt able to hold any food down... I am not sure if its the flea collar or the fact of something else.... I read the back of the package and it says it may cause vomitting and diarrhea both which he has had.... I have since taken the collar off and thrown it away... He is an older dog, 11 yrs old, and he had a flea collar on prior to this one, same brand.... but I am thinking maybe since it was new it probably was stronger and it hasnt rained as much... when I put the other collar on it was raining about every other day, not as hot outside.... its been hot since I put the new collar on him..... thinking the heat may have had something to do with it also... I have since taken away ALL his food so he would stop throwing up, and not dehydrate himself... I cant get him to the vet until the morning, and am hoping it was just the flea collar... I have since heard that HARTZ was not a good brand, but havent had any problems with them personally until now.... if its the collar.... hope that is just the problem!!! Everyone keep your fingers crossed that its just the poison from the flea collar!!!

Wingy 09-13-2004, 02:09 AM Dogs, like people, can develop allergies. You dont say what kind of dog you have but there are some breeds that have particularlly skin and this one be carried over to mixed breeds too. if he doesnt recover quickly call your vet, a dog can get dehydrated so quickly it could kill him... hopes he;s feeling better even as i type...
rottn 09-13-2004, 09:10 AM You need to also make sure it's the right size. Sometimes the stronger ones get put on a smaller dog and they overdose. I use those drops you put on the neck and they work great. They also have hydrocortisone drops for the inflammation. Hope he's feeling better.
toi_ama 09-13-2004, 09:32 AM Flea collars contain insecticides, which are the most poisonous substances there are. I recommend using a natural flea collar made yourself, using essential oils dropped onto fabric and tied around the dog's neck. Tea tree oil is good--------fleas trample each other to get away from that stuff-----and peppermint, too. Those don't kill fleas but the fleas don't like them and will just leave. Put some peppermint oil on a cloth under the dog's sleeping place or put a drop or two in a bottle of water and spray it on carpets, furniture, the dog and his bedding. Putting a few drops into a bottle of shampoo and using that to bathe the dog weekly helps. I made a very effective flea shampoo using a few drops of tea tree oil, peppermint oil, and eucalyptus oil in a bottle of conditioning shampoo. Don't get it in the dog's eyes, of course. Those essential oils are good to put in a bottle of water to spray, too, on the pet or its sleeping area. Adding some lavendar essential oil to the mix is nice, too.
az-tears 09-13-2004, 09:32 AM Try putting Brewers Yeast and Garlic in his food. They carry it at the pet store in powder or pill form , I would get the powder and just mix it in his or hers food. It takes about 3 weeks to work but fleas and ticks hate the taste of your pets blood and seem to stay off them.
Make sure to spray your yard every three weeks during flea and tick season and only spray when the sun is going down because sunlight kills the active ingredient {PERMETHRIN} in products. Hope this helps
myjutebe 09-13-2004, 10:10 AM I am sure it is the flea collar making your dog sick and because of your dogs age. I have an 11 year old cat and I put advantage on her like I have always done but this time she got sick the exact same way and would not eat. I put it on her last saturday and sunday she stopped eating. I did everything I could to get her to eat. I gave her regular tuna and she would eat a little bit. I finally bought Nutri Cal and she loved it. She is now finally starting to eat regularly but she lost a tremendous amount of weight.
I just think older animals cannot tolerate flea products.
From now on I am going to use natural flea products on her.
I have heard you can put baby powder on them and it dries out the fleas and they die. I have not tried it they do sell other alternatives to killing fleas. If you spray outside and kill the fleas your dog should not get them.
davsdab 09-13-2004, 10:21 AM check out the internet searches about Hartz flea and tick collars and drops. they are very dangerous to cats and dogs. They have caused serious permanent side affects and even death for pets. I put the drops on my cats and then found all this bad stuff about it on the internet and immediately washed it off them before any damage was done. Hartz has been sued over this and the reason the warning is now on the packaging is due to one of those suits.
rottn 09-13-2004, 11:21 AM The drops I use are from the vet and I need to call and get the name of them. The one's in the store made my other dog lose his hair in the area I put them. I think they are called Bio-Spot or something close to it. I threw the box away when I used the last one.
jr's girl 09-13-2004, 12:26 PM frontline is a great flea med, you can get it from your vet and in some pet stores. i havent had any problems with that and one of my dogs has sensitive skin. she cant handle flea shampoo but frontline has never been a prob. its a little expensive but it works. good luck and i hope your dog feels better.
Niightdrmr 09-13-2004, 02:09 PM Hi...
THANKS everyone for the advice...I have a Rott/Shep mixed....I took the flea collar of him around 6pm Sunday....well as of today Monday at 4pm he has held down his lunch.... he wasnt able to hold down his breakfeast well he only threw up a little of it, compared to before what he was throwing up.... but he's held down ALL of his lunch.... I called the 800 on the Hartz box they have listed on the back...First time i called it rang forever and no one answered!!! Well the second time I called I got this really nice lady who told me to give him 24 hours basically and see if he gets better... she said it would take at least 24 hours from the time I took the collar off for it to run its course....well this morning at 6am had not been 24 hours so that is probably WHY he had problems this morning... but like I said at 12noon he was able to hold food down.... she said to wash off his bedding (yeah ok lady he sleeps on his OWN sofa outside) and to bathe him using shampoo.... so guess what I got to do this morning.... drag his sofa out in the yard all by myself with him looking on like "where you taking my bed?" Hosed it down, and then the fun part washing him.... I only have my Pantene shampoo but figured it was as good as any.... so I washed him using it.... he already felt better I think.... he wanted to go for a walk afterwards so I took him....short walk... and he's acting like he feels better already.... but yeah for anyone planning on using a HARTZ flea collar please be VERY CAREFUL!!! Watch your animal really close.... there is also a web site www.hartzvictims.org that has people listed who have used this flea collar and it has KILLED their animals... but thanks everyone for the help and useful tips in killing his fleas.... I think they are probably gone for now, bathing him and washing his sofa but I do plan on trying the garlic as mentioned above.... I think with his age it would be the safest thing right now.... he's also lost weight with this (he threw up 7 times in one day, and once this morning) so hoping to get his weight back right first!!!! Thanks for all the help and advice...

I got MORE information from the people here at PTO than I did from the other two PET websites I signed up for in a last ditch effort looking for help!!! Way to go PTO always someone here who knows a little something about everything!!!!
myjutebe 09-13-2004, 02:18 PM I am glad your dog is better. If you need help with the weight gain try giving him Nutri Cal from the pet store it is a high calorie product that helps put weight back on them. I am currently giving it to my cat who got sick from Advantage Flea Drops. It seems to help and she just loves it.
Believe me I will never put Advantage on her again. After she got sick I looked up on the internet and people's animals died from Advantage. My cat is very, very sensitive to fleas and will tear herself up so I will just have to figure something else out. I have one cat that goes outside so he is bringing them in the house.
I love animals so I am glad to hear a good animal story and I am very happy your dog is okay.

Flea collars are toxic. Many animals have died from them. It's best to use Advantage or Frontline. Do not use those cheap over-the-counter products such as Top Spot or Zodiac. They do not kill fleas, they irritate the animal's skin, and many animals have died from them. Also, do not let your animal walk in grass that has been sprayed with pesticide - many condos and apartment complexes do this. Animals have died form this, too. All these products get into the animal's bloodstream. Even if the animal doesn't die right away, over time it will have health problems. Most of my own dogs are between 10 and 15.5 years old.
meldan 10-10-2004, 09:26 PM I dont know what the above posts have said, i couldnt read them....I feel so strongly about Hartz products i could spit nails.
I was a vet tech for many yrs and the stories i could tell about the reactions i have seen to their products would jsut amaze you. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not use their products. I have even walked up to ppl i dont know in stores and asked them to not buy the product they have in their hand (hartz). I dont care what kind of loon they think i am, if it saves one more animal it iwas worth it.
Frontline and Advantage makes very safe and good flea control products. And as far as flea collars go, they basically control a very small area. Fleas like the groin area the best, if they could make a flea jock strap- it might work better.
BUt sorry that is my two cents on Hartz. Good Luck and call your vet in the am.

JustTami 10-10-2004, 09:34 PM I saw your thread name and honestly gasped.
I had three cats, and used Hartz flea collars on them as well. I put them on at about 6pm, and when I woke up the next moring, one was dead, and one was vomiting. The other seemed uneffected.
Please get something natural, or at least from the vet.
Revolution is great stuff.
