My wife has a friend in prison here in Oklahoma, this friend keeps writing my wife letters to mail to her other friends that are in the prison system all over the place, could my wife get into trouble for forwarding this mail to and from her friend that is in prison? and if so what would happen?
Thanks

Hi...
First of all I dont think the letters will be allowed thru...you cant just take a letter and forward it to an inmate...it is illegal to forward mail from one inmate to another.....they dont allow inmates at one prison to have contact with inmates at another prison for safety precautions... what kind of trouble can your wife get into, that is hard to say....most of the times they will just send the letter back stamped with the fact "inmate to inmate mail not allowed"..... if she is on a visiting list she may be banned from visiting... most of the times if they dont mail the letters back they just throw them away there on the spot....but I would let her know they do not allow you to mail letters from one inmate to another inmate....unless the inmates are biologically related and they have permission from the warden.... and still in those cases most of the times they still dont allow it to happen....

Actually, I've heard that you can get into lots of trouble doing it. If, for instance, there's anything in code in those letters (and she'd never know it) that would get someone else killed or aid in the commission of some other crime, she could be considered an accomplice, possibly.

Just my opinion but I would NOT do it as from what I understand you can get in trouble. One of my guys friends who was moved had sent me a letter to send him and I didn't...no way not going to risk getting myself in any trouble or him in any more trouble!

If your wife doesn't mind helping she can write her friend's friends directly. She can advise them their mutual friend is alright and pass along whatever greetings or news there is to be shared. If she just doesn't want to take time or doesn't have the money for postage she should tell her friend in Oklahoma the truth.

I know here in Florida that is grounds for a DR (Disciplinary Review), lost gain time and time in confinement...so not worth it if you ask me!

My son is not allowed to send inmate to inmate mail and asked me to send his letters to his buddies using a fake address and fake name, have them write to ME, and have ME send back to my son. I told him if he's not allowed, then he's not allowed and I'm not risking anything for a letter!

I am a former TX CO, and it is called "piggybacking" and it is illegal. YES YOUR WIFE COULD GET IN TROUBLE! If these (and this "friend" knows it is illegal, that is why they are having your wife mail the letters!) letters contain gang intelligence code, drug drop information, orders to hurt/kill someone, etc. then she could be named as an accomplice. I strongly advise you to have a chat with her. It is not worth it. There is a reason inmates cannot write each other.
Hope she will listen to you!

Sheesh I think Michigan is the only state that will allow inmate to inmate letters. (Of course I can't be on two prisoners lists..but I digress). It seems to me that this "friend" knows it is illegal and that is why he doesn't want to do it. If there is a regulation that prohibits it, you can bet there is a consequence if you do. Talk to her and tell her your concerns.
