My guy got his Bachelors in...Human Services? Something along those lines. He's now working on his MBA and should be done by '07!

Another penpal just got his associates degree.

Another penpal is working on a vocational certification in something...I'm not digging through his letters to find out :)

The opportunities are out there, ya just have to search for 'em!

Do inmates pay full tuition?
My sweetheart has his BA prior too. He did get a certification in landscaping as well. He has a fairly good job there, paying more than $250 a month. Which is good I think compared to some of my penpals who are making about $50-60 a month.

I paid for my education! You're very right... education is priceless and it's worth every penny I've spent (and will continue paying for the next 20+ years :P)

Lots of people complain about prison but it is what you make of it...and I'm thrilled to hear that many people are taking college classes, GED, personal development and vocational classes. They're simply bettering their future :)

From reading this thread it looks like other states have some great opportunities. Mississippi doesn't offer much in the way of degrees. I think the only degree you can get in a Mississippi prison is discipleship.

To answer the question, my husband got his GED and is just finishing up horticulture.

My penpal has received his GED, an Associates in Psychology, just recently finished up to be certified in Auto Mechanic. And lets see...what else? <thinking> Heck, he has been down 10 years, he told me it took him 5 just to get Associates. He still has a long road ahead of him, so when he gets out he should be certified in just about EVERYTHING there is to offer.

My son is on study release and is taking the HVAC program at a college next to his prison. We only pay for books, no tuition. He walks out of the prison each week day unescorted and returns each afternoon unescorted. It has been such a morale booster and blessing.:D

He's learning a trade right now but I wa unsure whether or not prison's do diploma's or just ged. Any info on how the schooling in prisons works would be great!!

Check with the unit and see what they say or what's available. But as far as your question goes I've only known inmates to receive their GED. A GED isn't a bad thing either.

Hubby is working on a certification in Horticulture. He really seems to enjoy it, and I think he will do well with it. He has been in construction for over 30 years, so its nice to see the change. :)

My son has a certificate in Motivation for Change, Victims Impact and will be taking his GED sometime this week! I am very proud of him because he has a severe traumatic brain injury and he is fighting to overcome it. Here in Georgia they don't offer to much as far a I can see. He would do more if he could.

Only thing they teach you down South in Arkansas is how to pick cotton and work out in the field like the slave days...I'm not kidding, that's what it reminded me of.

I agree that education is key. When I served time in Virgina, they ended the Pell grants for those who wanted to go to college. Inmates had to pay for their own education. I go to George Mason University now, and graduate next year. I know that my education will pay off. I was fortuante to have support to help me, but ALSO going to college has opened up the door to a lot of opportunities: book offers, lectures on crime, etc. Not all people on the inside can receive a college education on the inside, but it is good to know that they are at least attempting to obtain something to better themselves.

Brian.
Yea education is the key. It kills the shame and negative energy from prison. I also have a felony and education got me through the tough times. It opens door and some educated people are understanding. They look at what you have become and not the past. I find if you have a felony and no education, the offender will just land right back in. Plus, the degree tells people that you have alot to offer.

not sure if this has been mentioned or not. but why do all these men/women get degrees in such when more then likely they wont get hired because of their criminal background.

Highly unlikely. To practice law in America, you need a JD (which is 3 years after a BS/BA) or be old enough to have previously earned an LLB.

You also need to be admitted to the bar in a state (or fed). A felony conviction will make this EXCEPTIONALLY difficult because a felon is, by definition, someone guilty of a crime of moral turpitude...and attorneys are of course supposed to be "right as rain!"

However, you can still be elected president of the United States as a convicted felon (for real!).
