Hurricane Frances is approaching the south eastern Florida coast. A possible category 5 hurricane. Evacuation orders have been issued for an area where FCI Miami and FDC Miami are located. FCI Miami was ground zero during Andrew in 1992--it was devastated. Inmates where locked in their cells for several days without air, electric and water. They lost all of their property. All were transferred after the storm to different institutions. Very few ever returned. FCC Coleman also lies in the storms path.
As a former inmate and having been incarcerated from 1987 to 2002 and going through the threat of several monster hurricanes, I can tell you that being locked up in a prison cell with the imminent threat of a catastrophic disaster storming in in you is a traumatic experience. Please pray for the well-being of all of the people that are incarcerated where this storm poses a threat.
