I was under the impression they were only allowed 1 call per month while in the Hole, otherwise known as Special Housing Unit.

But I have also heard they are allowed 1 call per week.

Does anyone else have experience with this that they could add? I am sure it would also be possible under different circumstances....they have different guidelines.

I know that in fed if you are in da hole for disciplinary infractions, you are allowed to use the phone once every 30 days. But if you are there for other reasons, ie protection, they are not susposed to keep you from the phone, but you are dependent on them to bring it to you.

I heard it was one 10 minute call per week. My husband has not been in the hole, but another woman that I've become friendly with has had that experience. I seem to recall her saying that he could call only once a week.

Hope this helps.

Now, I know that this is the Fed Forum but in Missouri State, I understand that it is once a month for 10 minutes...

It depends on why you are in the SHU. If they sanction you where your phone priv's are taken away, you won't have access to it at all.
I believe it is delt with on a case by case basis, but you are dependant on the guards to bring you the mobile phone unit, and I doubt they will do it whenever an inmate feels like it, phone priv's or not..

My man has been transferred to another prison for an operation and is in the hole "for his own protection" while he is there. He only gets 1 call per month right now, but for christmas they gave him 2 extra calls....God, how considerate of them, seeing as how he didnt do anything wrong to land in the hole in the first place.......

Thanks , its just a simple thing, normally an outpatient procedure, but of course they had to spend our tax dollars transferring him via Con-air , and then keeping him in lockdown till God knows when they decide to operate...lol
Ya just gotta love the BOP! Geeeze!

Okay excuse this if it is a stupid question :)

If they are in the hole, and they get that one call, does the call have to go through for it to be considered a call?
My friend is in Beaumont and he called me the other night, I wasn't home, so my voice mail took it, it would really suck if that was considered his one call.

Cindy....I don't think they will charge that as one call. When he called Jan 2...he had actually tried over a dozen times before I came in and each time left the message play on my recorder! These past 2 months while he has been in the hole...He will call the first time for about 10 minutes...saving the 5 minutes to call me back later in the month.
Hopefully he to will be able to call you back.

I can only respond regarding federal prisons. If an inamte is in the hole for disciplinary reasons, "under investigation" or the like, they are entitled to 1 call every 30 days. If they are in the SHU awaiting transfer or bed space availability or non disciplianry reasons they are entitled to a phone call every 7 days.

John,
What is NPSC, INC?
That is good information...thanks for posting. You seem to be knowledgable on federal prisons. Do you have a loved one inside?

I sent you a private messge explaining, but no I WAS a loved one on the inside and now on the outside. I do sentencing and departure work nationally nad do what we can do help shorten some ridiculous sentences. We are not trying to hustle business on this page, but are utilizing it to keep people informed o changes and to provide accuate information when the prison rumor mills start flying. Memers should ffel free to contact us anytime for accurate and direct infomation. Obviously we do not charge for that kind of help. Recently it seems we do not charge for ANY kind of help!!! LOL

I can say that in I only recieve one call a month while my dad is in the hole unless the guard forgets to pick the phone back up then dad will call me back and we get 2 calls. I guess once a month is better than none at all.

it is every thirty days. I have worked in the SHU and for inmates that were cool and never asked for anything I usually gave them 1 a week, but most guards a wanna be cops so thats probably not possible in that prison.

My man is in protective custody (the HOLE) at Forrest City Medium and he can call once a week on Wednesdays if there is no answer he can try again on Thursdays if they bring the phone...Thats not fair since he is only the because of pc. That is just another punishment he didn't deserve.

The administrative rules say that prisoners in administrative segregation (PC) rather than disciplinary segregation are supposed to get the same phone privileges as those in general population but it never happens that way. FedCURE has talked with the head honchos in D.C. about this but the BOP says it's a "staffing" issue. Z.

I think that it all depends on the individual institution... individual officer on duty... and where in the SHU you are.

When my honey was in the hole in USP Atlanta he was able to make calls once a week. When he was in protective custody in FCI Marianna it was once a month, but on some occasions the officer on duty would give him a call even though he'd already had his monthly call.

The BOP rules in every facility I was in say that if you are in Administrative Custody (Waiting for a diciplinary hearing, PC, investigation, seperation order, pending transfer, etc.) you get 1 call per week. If you are in Disciplinary Seg (serving a diciplinary penalty), and you have not lost your phone privileges, you get one a month.

There are many times that a person can get more (someone forgets to write in the book that they got one, someone sneaks one in after a cellmate makes a call, unit orderlies can usually call when ever they want, unit team grants an additional call, etc.).
