How do inmates that are too ill or have mental and physical handicaps afford to write letters if they have family that does not send in support?

View Full Version : Is mail a privilege or a right for prisoners? torrey 04-12-2002, 11:53 AM How do inmates that are too ill or have mental and physical handicaps afford to write letters if they have family that does not send in support? jdswifey02 04-12-2002, 01:12 PM In the state of IL... all inmates are given "state pay"... they are all required to also have a work assignment, although inmates who are handicapped (either mentally or physically) will have some exceptions made, but may be expected to participate in some groups, etc. The lowest rate of state pay is $15 per month which goes into their account... out of this the inmates can purchase commissary and they have a copay when they sign up for sick call, out of this account would come any retribution they may have to pay (like for having a ticket for damaging state property).... this is how inmates who don't have outside support could write letters. Inmates can volunteer/sign up for certain work assignments that require more work, but also pay better (ie: janitors make $30 a month, dietary workers make $45 a month, etc.).... Budwoman 04-12-2002, 01:19 PM IN NORTH CAROLINA, IF AN INMATE HAS NO FORM OF MAKING MONEY OR FAMILY THAT CAN SUPPLY MONEY, HE CAN GET POSTAGE STAMPS FROM THE STATE. BUT THAT IS ONLY IF HE IS COMPLETELY INDIGINENT. DONNA torrey 04-12-2002, 01:20 PM Yes I am aware of that system I was curious about the indigent old prisoners not able to work. soraya 04-12-2002, 01:26 PM I+ve also heard that some prisoners can get stamps from the ministry or the chapel, but I´m not sure about that torrey 04-12-2002, 02:11 PM I wonder why the authorities don't allow self addressed post envelopes to be sent to the prisoners? How could that be distorted into a method of high crimes and misdemeaners? Daveswife 04-12-2002, 02:36 PM Drugs can be concealed on the backs of stamps and the glue on the envelopes. It's also just a way to make more money off of us. Shortie 04-12-2002, 06:57 PM In texas they are required to work but do not get paid for it. It is sad but they are hard on inmates in texas.. Look we lost 2 death row inmates this week alone. They just exicute them like a number and not a life. They really do not care if they get mail or not even though they say they do.. soraya 04-13-2002, 04:06 AM I hear CA isn't that nice to prisoners neither...and is it true that sometimes they kill 4 death row inmates on the same day in the same prison? Not sure if that was in Texas though... Shortie 04-13-2002, 01:13 PM Cali rarely kills death row inmates most of them die by age or health reason then the injection.. Texas is notorious for killing inmates, both on and row and not!! soraya 04-14-2002, 01:44 PM :( Morrigan 04-24-2002, 11:06 AM In Ca prisons an inmate can get one or two envelopes a week if they have no money. You can also send in pre stamped envelopes you know the kind you buy from the post office and some of the facilities allow stamps to be sent in but that is individual to the facility Morrigan danielle 04-24-2002, 11:15 AM In Alabama, Wayne was allowed to keep the paper, envelopes, pencils, and stamps he took with him when he was incarcerated. I can also send stamps directly to him, but that's it, he has to buy all other stationary items. He's still in max security, so he's not allowed to work. If he did work he would be "paid" by the state with money in his account, though I'm not sure how much. He's asked for extra stamps; he said he gives them to guys that have no money for postage, so I send him at least a book a week. I don't think there is a limit to the amount of stamps he can have. sherri13 04-25-2002, 07:50 PM ONCE AGAIN I AM AFRAID THERE IS A REAL LACK OF CONSISTENCY HERE AND THE RULES /PROTOCOL VARIES NOT ONLY FROM STATE TO STATE BUT ALSO FROM INSTITUTION TO INSTITUTION- |
