Tuff_Act 09-14-2004, 01:50 PM My husband is at Deep Meadow and I go every weekend. It is important to tell you that these directions did not help me at all. I live in Madison and get to Pwohatan via Charlottesville. Mapquest and other such search engines also have bad directions. I made it there without to much trouble the first time but I am afraid some people could get really lost...
Also, it never fails, I mean NEVER, that someone in line in front of me is ddenied visit every week. So, please remember to make sure it is your loved ones designated day.
They alternate Saturday's and Sunday's based on DOC #.
And for real, you must be dressed appopriatly. ALWAYS take an extra set of clothes. Just in case.
P.S. I'd love to car pool
Daveswife 12-13-2005, 06:10 PM My husband was just moved to Deep Meadow today. I haven't even been able to talk to him yet. How long did it take for you to get a visit? They told me it depended on how long it took them to clear him medically. The answering machine picked up the recording so that's how I know he was moved there today. Are the CO's jerks there? They were really decent at Coffeewood.
I'll be coming from WV, since I can't get a real mailing address, it tells me to take 81S to 64 to 522 to 711. How far off of 60 is 711 or do you not go that way?
Ok sorry for bombarding you. Thanks for any info you can give me on this place.
ceehatch 12-13-2005, 10:16 PM Once he sees medical you should be able to go see him that weekend. Visitation is based on their id #'s ie) this weekend odds are sat. and evens are sunday. I haven't had any problem with the CO's, they all seem really nice. You won't be getting on 60 to get there, unless you make a wrong turn. I live close to WV. Once you get off of 64 its about another 15 minutes to the prison. The turn to 711 is right at a bp gas station, not hard to see. visits usually last an hour, depending on what time you get there, if you get there right before count, which is at 1 then sometimes you get an extra half hour or so.
Daveswife 12-18-2005, 10:32 PM Thanks for the info. Do they have vending machines also? And what time does sign up usually start? The directions were really helpful thanks again.
ceehatch 12-19-2005, 05:49 PM They do have vending machines. Two with sandwiches, two with snacks and two drink machines. I believe that visitation starts at either 8 or 9. I always try to get there around 11:30 because they have count at 1:00. They will stop letting people in at 12:30 so if you are in visiting then they won't let you out until count clears and that is usually around 1:30. Therefore I am able to sneak in an extra half an hour up to an hour visit. Otherwise you only get an hour visit. The only thing is to try to get in before the close for count or you are stuck in the waiting room until it clears. I usually take our kids and they get a little anxious having to wait.
Daveswife 12-19-2005, 06:04 PM Thanks so much, the info is really helpful. I forgot to ask if we can carry change in clear bags like Coffewood let us do. I found out Christmas day is his day (he's an odd), but he may not clear medical by then. So I guess it will be New Year's eve for our first visit there. Maybe I'll see you there sometime.
ceehatch 12-19-2005, 07:29 PM You can take up to $20 in change in a clear baggie. We are also odds. If I were you I would call and ask if he had cleared yet. Mine assumed they would tell him when actually once he had seen the Dr. he had been cleared. He got there on a Tues. and I was able to see him that Sat. If you call they will tell you if he is allowed and you can call pretty much anytime.
Daveswife 01-05-2006, 06:07 PM Well he finally got to see the dr today or yesterday, I can't remember what he said. So I guess I'll be making the "maiden voyage" on Sunday. Do they have lockers for your stuff or should I leave it in the car? Thanks for all the info.
ceehatch 01-05-2006, 07:44 PM They do have lockers. Good Luck!
Daveswife 01-09-2006, 08:10 AM Well, I had my first visit to DMCC. That was a bit different. Coffeewood is so completely different procedure wise. I found it easily thanks to the BP landmark. TY again for that bit of info. The CO's were very nice and quite laid back if I do say so. It was just so wonderful to see David for the first time since before Christmas and now that I get to hug and kiss him it's heaven.
Thanks again for all the info, it helped soooooo much!
keonismom 01-30-2006, 04:50 PM My son has recently been moved to DMCC. He is 20 years old and has 25 years for armed robbery. We have been estranged for several years but we are now corresponding - and we are very glad. We have never had experience with the prison system and are a little bewildered. Any advice would help. Our family lives in Texas. Thank you all and God Bless.
Daveswife 01-30-2006, 06:32 PM Welcome to PTO and the VA forum.
It's going to be pretty overwhelming at first. The best thing to do is take your time and go through the forums here. Specially the posts in the VA forum. Try to learn as much as you can without trying to cram it all in at once.
I'm happy for you and your son being reunited. That will really help him through this.
My best advise it to just write as often as you can and stick around here. We're all here for each other. If you ever have ?'s, just post them where they seem most appropriate and I can promise you'll get some kind of response. Usually pretty quickly.
Again, I'm glad you found us and I look forward to hearing more from you.
If you need any help, please feel free to PM me (click on my name and choose send private message) and I'll do whatever I can to help ya!
Daveswife 01-30-2006, 06:36 PM Oh, I forgot. Please take a minute to introduce yourself to the rest of the forum.
Thanks and see ya 'round!
keonismom 02-02-2006, 06:04 AM Hi I'm new here and very curious about Deep Meadow and the rules governing the inmates. I have a few questions - My son says that we can send him money but it has to be a Post Office Money Order. Is it a good idea to send money and does it have to be a Post Office Money Order or will any money order do? We are not in Virgina (Texas) so we cannot visit him. Can we send him anything else? Thanks for your help. Any advice would be appreciated.
dwfighterva 02-02-2006, 01:00 PM According to the business office at Deep Meadow, they prefer the post office money orders, but they will accept Western Union. No cash, no personal checks. You mail it to them and throw in a note to your son telling him you sent in a money order and for how much. THey will take out the MO and then put in a receipt for it and pass the note along to your son. She told me it can take 3 days to show in his account so make sure you get it there early before he goes to commisary. He must buy everything from the commisary.
I sent in an article I got online and it had an ad for mortgage rates and had a small map of the US on it. They rejected it. I also had ordered a magazine subcription and they are rejecting it as well. The counselors have to approve it.
Daveswife 02-02-2006, 02:02 PM Well Crap I just sent his FHM mag to him (changed his addy from Fairfax). David told me that they hold money orders that are not from the P.O. for up to 14 days. The P.O. ones they post right away. I think there is a maximum that they can have on the books at one time too. I'll have to check into that.
I sent him all the stuff I printed from the VA Legislature and they let him have it no problems. I also sent him some info on a new medication for alcoholics which I printed off the puter, no prob there either. I wonder why they gave you such a way to go?
Also make sure to get his building # and bed # and use it in the addy when you write. David said they are sticklers about that.

dwfighterva 02-02-2006, 03:06 PM LOL! A lot of stuff I sent went through, no problems. But that stupid mortgage ad map rejected the whole thing. I cut all around it and will resend it. Along with the other stuff. I can see taking the one thing and letting the rest go, but they sent the whole thing back with the form saying MAPS. Gimmeabreak!
Daveswife 02-02-2006, 06:22 PM Ok, My question then is. What the heck is wrong with maps? What is he going to plan his escape with a mortgage lender? Geeeeeeezzzzzzzzz
dwfighterva 02-02-2006, 06:31 PM It was all of 2" wide and 1.5" high. Very colorful. The whole continental US. You can hardly see the states let alone plot anything!
When he told me something was rejected because of maps, I was like "HUH? I didn't send any maps". You should have seen my face when I got it back.
mrstowns 02-06-2006, 09:03 PM hi my name is ke ke and my fiance just got moved to dmcc on friday feb 3. i live in chesapeake va and i really have no way to get there. we have a three month old son and i would really like to see him. if there is anybody close and they would like to car pool i would love to. i will also help with the gas what ever the cost. can somebody give me some info about dmcc. he really does not know anything about prison and this is his first time going. what else can i send him besides money? how do they treat the inmates there? how long is there visiting hours.
dwfighterva 02-06-2006, 09:10 PM Welcome ke ke!! You can't send anything BUT money orders to Deep Meadow. He can't have visitors until cleared by medical and you have to call to find out on Friday after 5pm. Don't even bother calling before then, they will just tell you to call back then. Visiting is based on his DOC number. Odds one day, Evens the other. You get a minimum of an hour. Getting medical attention there is hit or miss and I have had to call out there several times about it. The guards seem to be fair from what I have heard and seen. There are a bunch of us with men there so if you read all these forums, you will find a lot of information. Holler if you have any other questions.
mrstowns 02-06-2006, 09:41 PM thanx for the info to all
dwfighterva 03-05-2006, 04:54 PM I wanted to add in some additional information about Deep Meadow.
If you are coming in from the SE, along 288 from 95, you can get off at the Hugenot Trail exit on 288. This is SR711. Take it west. It is a winding rural VA road we all know so well. You will pass a Citgo about half the way. Then the turn in will be on your right, blue sign. That saves about 20 minutes from going all the way up to 64 and then coming back down in the other way. Deep Meadow and the other institutions are all off SR711.
I asked what gets on their books fastest - Post Office money order or Jpay. She checked and told me that Jpay goes direct to their account. Money Orders get processed and may take several days to actually get posted to their account. Of those, they clear the post office ones first.
sweetNeni 04-04-2006, 10:29 AM HEllo my huband was sent to deap meadow correcftional center today. have no idea what. please help
what do i have to do to get calls from him?? do i need an account?
call from DMCC to fairfax va are 2.25 to connect and .25 per min after you could only talk for 20 min. this is bull!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ceehatch 04-04-2006, 02:44 PM Yes... as you will find out sweetNeni... MCI has you cornered on the phone market. Not much we can do except to grin and bare it. There is Prison Calls online that you can check with. I used them for a while when my husband was in Riverside Regional. Those calls ended up being $1 a minute. PCO cut it in half for me. If you don't use PCO you will need to call MCI and set up the account with them. I think they will allow him to call a few times before they make you set up the account. So it's best to just go ahead and do it.
jbyrdsbabygirl 04-18-2006, 01:25 PM yah it's bull alright and jbyrd likes to call alot we have 2 babies. $100 only got us 14 calls he blew it up in 2 days
Daveswife 04-19-2006, 10:38 AM my hubby went through $700 in less than a month in Feb. Had to pay MCI, Verizon and then they moved him here and I had to pay CBS again. UUUUggggggg does it ever end?
Daveswife 06-16-2006, 06:41 PM Well, hubby bubby is headed back to DMCC soon. The off to wherever. I just hope it's closer and a lower level classification than they said now that he had no detainers left. Crossin my fingers!! LOL. But UGGGGGGG the 3 1/2 hr drive again...
timmyslove 09-22-2006, 11:17 AM no you cant send him anything but money orders, you wire him money online through j-pay.com any questions just ask? or personal message me
AnthonysWife07 09-10-2007, 10:46 AM My husband got transferred to Deep Meadows on Thursday can someone please tell me how the visitation stuff works up there and what you have to bring with you and if you bring a child what you have to have with you so they can go in??
*email address removed per PTO Policy*
 Thank you
dwfighterva 09-10-2007, 11:05 AM Sure thing! Check out this Deep Meadow Prison Guide (http://www.prisontalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=220318) it has all the information you need. If you still have questions, just holler.
Welcome to PTO!!
rods_angel 01-07-2008, 06:14 PM I know there is no definate answer for this, but my husband is getting transferred from Deep Meadows in the morning. I was wondering if anyone knew if there was a certain place that they transferred level 2 offenders or if they just send them to random places? Also does anyone know if he will stay in a VA facility or can he move to a different state. Sorry if the questions are silly but we are new at this. TIA for all of your help
dwfighterva 01-07-2008, 06:29 PM Glad to help! He can go to any Level 2 in the state. Most of them are large camps with 1,000 in dormitory settings. Some are better than others but its the luck of the draw as to where they end up going. I was told they try to put them closest to their home area, but that doesn't work so I wouldn't bet on it.
As for a interstate transfer, it is possible but it hardly ever happens. You need to find someone in the other state willing to transfer to Virginia. Then you will have to pay all the expenses incurred for the transfer; airplane tickets for him and the guards to go with him to guard him the entire way, the salary of the guards and other miscellaneous fees. I believe it is over $5,000. Also, Virginia DOC has to agree he can go to the other state.
Once you get approval, there is no guarantee it will ever happen. I know Kari tried for a long time to get her husband transferred and I believe she finally gave up.
rods_angel 01-07-2008, 06:33 PM Thanks so much DW I really appreciate your prompt response. This has been a tough ordeal as I'm sure you know. So the least bit helps. God Bless
Babybrowneyes73 02-01-2008, 05:14 PM I was wondering if anyone would know how to get to DMCC from Va Beach. Since I will be traveling with small kids, I hoping find a better route than on mapquest. Please advise.

Depends on how you want to get there. You can go I64 to exit 159 and follow 522 to 711 and in that way. Or, you could sneak up 460, hook onto I95, to 288 and take that around Richmond to Hugenot Trail (711) and head on in that way.

Though it was a long drive, I found it. Thank you for your assistance and info from this thread for DMCC.
ChristianLdy 02-03-2008, 07:28 AM Babybrowneyes - I used to take Rt 64 to Rt 288 South then a right onto Rt 711. I found it was about 15 minutes faster than taking 64 all the way to 522. You might want to try that next time you go.
I hope you had a fantastic visit!
Babybrowneyes73 02-05-2008, 04:25 PM Thank you for your assistance.
ChristianLdy 02-05-2008, 05:32 PM Anytime :)
dwfighterva 02-05-2008, 07:29 PM I knew someone who was coming in from southeast and she would go up 522, past 711, go to Route 6 and then come down across that rickety bridge. I figure she added about 20 minutes to her drive.
mrsadams 02-14-2008, 12:00 PM i was wondering if anyone knew how everything was with kids visiting......
dwfighterva 02-14-2008, 05:43 PM Take their birth certificate. If they are not yours, then you need approval by a parent. If they are in diapers, you will have to remove your diaper and use one of theirs when you are searched. If they can sit on your lap, they don't count in the visitor total. You must keep them with you at all times; they can't run around the room and the inmate cannot discipline or raise his voice to the child AT ALL or the visit will be terminated.
mrsadams 03-03-2008, 07:23 AM WHOA! Thanks DW. It will be harder for my husband to keep his mouth shut than for me. i do have one in diapers...i assume i won't be able to bring any diapers, wipes, etc. How about a bottle? I'm sure they'd call a code if i broke out my boob to nurse my baby:nono:
dwfighterva 03-03-2008, 04:06 PM I don't know exactly what the rules are for bottles, but I have seen them being taken in. Yes, you will have to leave all other stuff outside, change into one of their diapers there at the search part. You can't take in a favorite toy or anything like that.
bobbyparents 04-18-2008, 04:41 PM Hi Everyone, we are new to the forum. Our son was transferred to Deep Meadows. We have been reading your entries. They have been very helpful in answering some of our questions. We are very thankful for this forum and support group. We saw directions to the prison from other locations, but does anyone have directions from Fredericksburg VA? Thanks again.
ChristianLdy 04-20-2008, 08:53 AM Welcome to PTO and the VA forum, bobbyparents. :) I'm glad you're already finding some helpful information here. I remember well those awful first few weeks when I knew absolutely nothing and was so afraid. PTO helped me immeasurably back then, too. Please keep looking around and asking questions. This site is filled with knowledgable, caring people who are walking the same (or at least a very similar) road and want to help!
As far as directions, when I was travelling to Deep Meadows I found the best/quickest way was to take 95 South to 295 towards Charlottesville. From 295, take 64 West towards Charlottesville. Stay on 64 for approximately 2-3 miles then take Rt 288 South. After 4-5 miles, look for Rt 722. Turn right (heading west) onto 722/Huguenot Trail. You'll be on 722 for approx 4-5 miles then see the sign for the prison on your right. Turn right at that road and Deep Meadows will be the first prison entrance (Powhatan Correctional Center is also there, as well as James River) on your left.
I always found that to be the most direct and quickest route. From Fredericksburg, it's probably slightly less than an hour and a half drive. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask! Hope you have a great visit!
thruHisgrace 04-20-2008, 05:27 PM Hi Bobbyparents. Our son just left Deep Meadows on the 11th. He was there for about 5 weeks. It was ok (everyone was pretty helpful)- he was cleared in three weeks so we could visit him. We were told it would take 6 to 8 weeks. It was great to hug him for the first time in a year! He was just transfered to Augusta CC and his release date is 1 year from today. We live in Woodbridge and it took us 1 hour and 40 mins to get there - it should take you about 30 minutes less depending on where you live in Fredericksburg. It is back in the middle of nowhere! If you type "Deep Meadows" into the search portion of the forum it will take you to an informational page put together by dw. It is pretty informative. This forum has been so wonderful! Everyone is so great! So welcome to the family.
Diana
bobbyparents 04-21-2008, 07:49 PM ChristianLdy and thruHisgrace, thank you so much for all the information. We appreciate the details. It's good to have this forum, each other, and to sense God in the midst of it all. God bless all of you.
JAndersonschick 03-30-2009, 08:58 AM Yesterday was the best visit ive EVER had with my boyfriend....im on cloud 9 right now!!! {the only part that sucked was wanting to take him home with me at the end of visitation} ....i Just wanted to let you guys know that from the charlottesville area...taking 64 to 288, then the exit for 711 is the best and EASIEST way to get to DMCC! i got there with NO problems!!
:D
Bluesette 09-29-2009, 09:42 AM Hello all,
I, too, am new here. It's gratifying to talk among people who are in similar situations with their incarcerated loved ones. My son has 3 and a half more years to go at Deep Meadow. I am already thinking about his release. I don't own a car and can't drive, but I am considering finding a private means of transportation such as a van, limo, or bus that would take me from State Farm to Washington, DC. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what would be the best mode of transportation and what the price would be if I wanted to meet him at Deep Meadow Correctional Center and bring him home? Thanks.
RamsMaMi 09-30-2009, 12:28 AM mapquest does not know a state farm...it does know a maidens, va which will basically get you to the destination. My boyfriends at James River Work Center and I gave up trying to fing State Farm Va but it did suggest the Maidens and that got me there!!
dwfighterva 09-30-2009, 05:05 PM Mapquest will show Deep Meadow across the river. Look south of the river, along Route 711 and try to find Pleasants Road or Woods Way in Powhatan, VA 23139.
wolfasset 10-01-2009, 02:19 AM hey fighter help me plz. how can i find people with loved ones at sussex 1 or2 prisons? also anyway to find people in nc that have loved ones in va prisons? any help would bbe great!:D
dwfighterva 10-01-2009, 06:13 PM Best thing is do what you are doing and that is posting here in the Virginia forum. Doesn't matter where you are, if your loved one is in Virginia, then you need to post here. Sussex is in the Eastern Section and others will find your questions and answer them. Just hang tight and make yourself at home.
BeThereAlways85 12-09-2009, 01:48 PM Hi my name is Katrina... Im new to this whole thing its scary and uneasy for me.... My ex boyfriends is in DMCC and he has till 2012. His father has passed away this week and its been hard for him. He dosen't know im coming but im going to see him this weekend on Sunday he is an even number. I cant wait to hug him its been almost three years. I want to rekindle the relationship and im so excited that I have found him yet again.... Im so confussed about this whole direction thing i have six diffrent directions im in Fredericksburg so if anyone can help I would greatly apperciate it. God Bless you all this holiday season.
dwfighterva 12-09-2009, 03:34 PM Here are some good directions. From Fredericksburg, take 95 south to 295 and take it west toward Charlottesville. After it hooks back onto 64, the next exit is 175 which is Route 288. Take it south (only way to go) and after you cross the James River, take the first exit, it is Hugenot Trail (Route 711). Take it right which is west. You will go 8.5 miles and see the big blue correctional center sign on the right. Turn on that road and wind your way through houses. When you get onto DOC property, Deep Meadow is the one to the left and Powhatan is straight ahead.
