Dear Governor Schwarzenegger,
I'm writing to urge your support of the "Three Strikes and Child Protection Act of 2004." As you know, the passage of this improtant Initiative will save the State 800 million dollars annually and, ensure that violent felons and child molesters are locked up for life instead of drug users and petty criminals as is the trend now the way the Three Strikes Law is currently applied.
As a voting taxpayer of this great State I'm appalled at the way our once vaunted Education system has it's budget cut year after year while the Department of Corrections Education increases! Money is continually taken from our childrens education to finance an abused and misused Law that has been proven not to work nor lower the crime rate and to pay the Guards of the CCPOA Union outrageous salaries and overtime.
Health and Welfare budget has been cut and care for our Seniors and disabled has been lessened! For what? To finance a Prison Industrial Complex rife with corruption and brutality and fraud that is out of control and feels itself to be abouve the law!
The "Three Strikes and Child Protection Act of 2004" will fi and correct this prison system by 1) saving hundreds of millions of dollars that can be better spent on Education and local law enforcement, 2) stop wasting our tax dollars on locking up non-violent felons for life, 3) ensure that child molesters and violent felons are locked up for life, 4) ease prison overcrowding and the need to build more prisons.
The Three Strikes Law as it's applied now fails to target the hard core violent offenders it set out to reach, and has diverted critical funds from crime prevention and Education to horrendous punishment for non-violent offences.
Governor, locking up non-violent offenders does not equal being tough on crime. The money and resources being spent on this does not justify the huge fiscal cost and societal impact. How many more prisons must we build, in place of schools, before our society wakes up?
Our great State of California needs to modify the Three Strikes Law. It is the harshest amd most aboused one in the Nation. It has little impact in reducing violent crime and, the 25 years to life sentence should be reserved for the habitual violent offenders.
Governor, you've asked to hear from the people so that you may govern better, I hope my voice is heard. Thank you for your time, understanding, and compassion in this matter.
