I'd like to welcome everyone to PTO's newest forum, Dieting & Health! Thank you David, for giving us our own much-needed corner of the community

I'm working on several thread ideas and topics at this point, and would love LOTS of input!!!

So, let's start this off....what do YOU want to see here?

I think different types of diets, ideas, recipes is a start!

recipes would be great!! I'm getting really tired of grilled chicken breast and salad*L*

Okay, so will probably need a sub-forum for recipes, and maybe separate "sticky" threads for the different diets everyone is following (i.e. Atkins, WeightWatchers, South Beach, etc.)?

*mind racing furiously now*

Keep the suggestions coming, folks!!!

I think the Sticky's for different types of diets is a GREAT idea!!!
And a subforum for recipes is perfect!

Maybe also a Success Stories subforum to celebrate people reaching their goals?
How about an Exercise Subforum as well???

This is a great idea! :)
I have a diet plan I followed called "Healthy Ways" by Kaiser health insurance.I lost 37 pounds in 6 months and NEED to do it again! I'll post the specifics later after I find all my literature

Okay, the goal thread is a definite...thanks, Lady Wabbit ;)

Also, we will have Product Reviews...i.e. frozen meals, energy bars, supplements, etc.

What about restaurants that offer a healthy menu?

Restuarants are a good idea. I like the recipe thing...heck...I like all of them!! :D Would a "weekly weigh-in" be a good or bad idea??? I know like at Weight Watchers and stuff...they have the weekly weigh-in to congratulate people on reaching their goals and stuff...but, maybe a weigh-in would be to personal. :(
I'm soo happy to see this forum here...YAY!!!!

What about excersizing?!?!? I just joined a gym yesterday!

No, a weigh-in is a great idea, Selena...it would be voluntary, so no one would feel "pressured".

And, I'm glad you're here!!! Woohoooo!

Exercise is definitely half the battle, Danielle....I know without it, I can't lose an ounce!

I'd also like to see a thread/sticky where we could review fitness tapes/DVDs; there's nothing worse than spending money on a routine that stinks!

My friends all go on Atkins, South Beach, etc. and are all excited when they drop 10 lbs. Then a couple months later they gain 20 back...
I have lost 25 lbs. (never gaining back a pound) and am in better shape in my 40's than ever before because I changed my lifestyle rather than restricting my food choices.
I eat a big breakfast, and a decent lunch, then for dinner I make sure I have lots of veggies along with whatever else I am eating (and I eat them first to keep me from filling up on those comforting carbs it is easy to crave when depressed). I do not drink soda (the WORST thing for your body - even diet soda) and don't eat after 8 pm because you have no chance of wearing that food off now do you?? I try to limit snack foods like chips & candy but I am not Nazi about it. I usually reserve them for when I am eating out of the vending machine at visitation - makes it special???? It is way too hard to limit food when you have kids who need to eat too, so this way they can still have their favorite foods and learn healthy habits.
The BEST thing I ever did was learn how to do Pilates. It is easy, can be done by people of all physical levels because it is no-impact and it is tremendously good for your health as well as your looks!! I am more than an inch taller since I started doing them 3 years ago (weight spread out over more height = thinner!), hardly ever get sick (because it improves your breathing) or injured (because it improves your balance) and have tons of energy. I found out about it because a ton of famous celebrities & dancers use this exercise to stay in fantastic shape. You can buy a tape over the internet and do it at home or take a class at the YWCA. Think of how great you could look when he gets home!!!!!

How about a thread for all the latest medical reviews or news. Such as studies on the health benefits of blueberries, etc..

I'm heading out to do some errands, but will be back on this evening to organize all these fantastic suggestions into some type of format.....and to put up an "Intro" sticky.

Everyone (including me)--stand straight, head up, and SMILE! You are ALL beautiful!!!

All the ideas are great here!! I love this! Maybe take pictures of yourself now........ so in a few months after being dedicated to this program another picture can be taken, like the "before and after photos" that are on all exercise comercials. I did it and wow!!! I wish I had a scanner so I could show you all! You know how depressing it is to look at pictures of yourself and want to throw them away cause you hate the way you look?? It is so great when you are EXCITED to look at the pictures and PROUD to send them to your man. :yay:

I love this!!!

Personally I don't go for weigh-in's...I find them depressing and they are misleading. Muscle weighs more than fat, so when you are exercising you do "gain" a few pounds at first, then it starts dropping as the fat falls off. I like to judge my weight loss by what size I'm wearing, so maybe that could be an option too...for example, I've gone from a 28W to an 18W since 12/03/03! How's that?

I like that idea, Denise!!! :D Clothes size does make a difference...I also like the before and after pics!!!! Man...I can't express how happy I am to see this forum here...Thanks, David!!! :D

I just wanted to say this is a fantastic idea for a forum :D

Ok, gotta get out the metric converter, we use kilos here, not pounds so I can get into these great ideas that you are all going to post :)

i think that this forum is a wonderful idea!!!! whoever thought of it, great job!!! i think we can all learn from eachother and help eachother!!! thanks ladies! this is wonderful.

as for my input, i think that eating disorders should be discusses. everyone has a form of an eating disorder whether it be being an over eater or anorexic. many woman suffer from eating disorders and no one knows. i just thought it would be something to consider.

THAT is incredible, Denise...and you should be very proud of yourself!!!

Most people don't believe the muscle vs. fat analogies, but it's true. When I was hard into weight training, I weighed 156 lbs., but no one could believe I was an ounce over 130 lbs. Besides, muscle tone adds definition to the body, giving an overall "sleeker" appearance.

Good to see you here, D!

jeffs, I think an Eating Disorder thread would be very helpful....I'll add it right after this post.

Oscar, the Before and After idea is a done deal; I made it a sticky so everyone can always find it ;)

Keep those ideas rolling in, people!!!
