View Full Version : Started to teach myself Crochet
Chained No More 08-26-2004, 10:11 AM I started to teach myself to crochet and am excited. I started an Afghan last night. I know 3 woman who are expecting child and I want to be able to make them cute baby things. I am just trying to keep myself busy so why not crochet? Anyone here crochet?
Lady Wabbit 08-26-2004, 10:19 AM I've been crocheting since I was a child. I just wish I could read and follow the directons*L* I also like to quilt and I do book after book of search and find puzzles. Anything to keep myself busy.
rottn 09-26-2004, 05:37 PM I taught myself with alot of tips from my friends. I'm learning how to knit right now though. My next project is a new blanket for my bed.
MsAloha1018 09-27-2004, 04:06 AM I'm just starting out crocheting again, but did it sporatically ever since I was 11 or 12 when my foster mother taught me. I have one project started and may turn that into an afghan with baby roses. I love it and plan to teach my 13 year old daughter as soon as I learn enough patience to do so!!!
Midnight63 09-27-2004, 08:03 AM I have been crocheting for 30 years....and I love it. I finished my first blanket at 11 and my mother STILL has it laying over the back of her couch. I have 2 others started and now that you mention it, I should pull them out and finish them. Might take some persuading, but I think I would enjoy that. Thanks for mentioning it!:)
Good luck and please be sure to post pics of your finished products..I'd love to see them!:D

jat76009 09-27-2004, 08:11 AM I've been crocheting for years but recently tried out needlepoint. It's very addicting for sure and can get pretty expensive. A good place to go for free needlepoint and cross stitch kits is www.janlynn.com (http://www.janlynn.com) if any of you are interested in giving it a try.
Dragon 10-04-2004, 08:51 PM I crochet too
Ivory 10-04-2004, 09:00 PM I do a lot of crocheting. It is very relaxing. There are all kinds of free instructions on line as well. I get most of mine from about.com.
Retired-10 10-04-2004, 09:06 PM I learned to crochet while in college. I looked like such a dork sitting in the middle of my dorm room on a weekend crocheting...instead of going out boozing it up and whoring myself out. Haha :) *adjusts halo* :)
I swear I'm the prime example of adult ADHD so it's hard for me to keep going on one afghan for too long. Translation: I have numerous scarves and lil blankets for the cat bed.
Tatt22dMOM 06-21-2005, 12:57 PM So glad to hear you started and taught yourself I taught myself years ago, and have made many blankets, totes, purses, patch work vest ,sweaters with little dollie type circles. If you are ever interested in new patterns let me know I have hundreds of books and patterns. I would be willing to run off and send to you so you can try something new just let me know what ya have in mind. I'm a crafter of many hats LOL!!! and right now into making hats. Being sewing like mad lately and soon I will pick a needle up and make some thing. To warm to do a blanket this time a year and even worse when I go thru hot flashes..<giggles> Have a great day and crochet on my friend...
I too crochet and cross stitch. I have made a king size bedspread (not an afghan) as well as many other things. Granny squares are an easy do for baby blankets. Easy on beginners also. I have more than a filing cabinet full of patterns I inheireted when my mother died. She taught me how to read a pattern but I have found it easier sometimes to write them out in plain english in a notebook it it is a difficult pattern or one done in filet.
Happy needleworking.
Lillybee 08-29-2005, 05:32 PM I crochet also, make mostly afgans. I cross stitch also, I have a large collection of African American designs. I enjoy working with my hands being created and watching it turn into something nice.

I've been crocheting since August 1997...Baby things are VERY easy to make, provided you find the right patterns. (Some of them can be VERY complicated for a beginner.) If I may suggest, you might want to try googling for Bev's Country Cottage. Her website has a TON of free patterns, and some really NICE, yet very easy to make baby items. In particular, she has a newborn bootie pattern that is VERY easy to do, and you could probably make several pairs in an evening, once you get the hang of it. If you're looking for an easy baby blanket/afghan pattern, there's one on the Project Linus website that is simple, but looks more intricate than what you'd expect a beginner's pattern to be. ( It's called the Sideways Shell Pattern..) Another option for an easy baby ghan is yarncat.com's site. She's got quite a few babyghan/lapghan patterns too..Although I think you could also get away with using her Skinny V pattern for a scrap babyghan, if that's of interest! (The advantage to that pattern is that there are no ends to weave when you're finished, and it goes REALLY quick!)
Have fun crocheting!

babygurl79 05-07-2006, 12:42 PM i self taught myself over the holiday season.......i want to make my family scarves and my sister a baby blanket for her baby
Eternal Hope 05-07-2006, 12:51 PM Ooh, I love to crochet :) Also I cross stitch, and do needlepoint too. These make great gifts!!!
JKB's Girl 05-07-2006, 01:03 PM Add me to the crocheting club as well. My mother-in-law taught me right before she passed away. She was awesome, did those dainty little doilies w/all those small intricate stitches. I wish I had learned more from her, but then I wasn't counting on losing her when I did.
I recently learned a new stitch or two. I'm glad you guys listed some websites to go to. Crocheting has been a godsend since hooking back up w/my fella. Keeps the mind occupied on something else besides him.
So, happy hooking:p ladies, and I mean that in the cleanest way possible. :p
meowmachine 08-31-2006, 11:27 AM I've been crocheting for more than thirty years, and managed to teach myself to read patterns. I crochet afghans and doilies and have made some stuffed animals. It is very relaxing for me. I crochet when I watch TV because just sitting and looking at TV is so incredibly boring for me. I have to do something with my hands.
I suggest the Annie's Attic website. Just google for Annie's Attic, and you should find it. There is a different free pattern posted each day.

brooks 09-30-2006, 11:09 AM I crochet too, though not too often.with work and a 5yr old. Yeah, during TV at nite when I'm not writing to hubby. My mom taught me mostly, some actually from the study hall teacher in Jr High(forever ago) and some new designs from my friend's mom. I love doing crafts, but finding the time is difficult.I have done a few painted t-shirts recently.Helps cover the stains on older shirts:) and my son can have some fun too.
Ivory 09-30-2006, 08:24 PM I have trouble finding time to crochet as well, but better the time should pass quickly!
RedHerring 09-30-2006, 09:07 PM I taught myself to crochet from the internet, and I've gotten pretty good at it if I do say so myself. Trouble is I learned from old patterns I could find on line, so I have a hard time understanding a lot of the newer patters.
I crochet with thread mostly and do table cloths and bedspreads. I've always been an over achiever:D :p A crochet club would be fun and maybe add some pictures of recent projects too:idea:
orchidia_168 10-05-2006, 05:54 PM starter here too :( ,my aunt tried to show me but....i got some improvement to do!:D
booclee 10-10-2006, 07:25 PM I love to crochet, I taught myself with books. My only problem is all the unfinished projects that I start. Currently working on a baby blanket, wonder how old they will be when I'm done,

meowmachine 10-18-2006, 08:29 PM Yes, a crochet club would be fun. I like to crochet with thread but have never made table cloths or bedspreads. I've made some big doilies, though.

She would like to have the Cheshire Cat on the afghan and asked me to see if I can find a pattern for her-I am not having any luck in my search -so I came to you guys.If you know where I can download a pattern for her please, please, let me know.
You might want to email me privately. I don't check the site daily.
THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH..
txsfmhstn 02-07-2007, 10:13 PM I have been trying to teach myself to crochet. Which book is the best to learn from? Any advice would be great.
I also do plactic canvas, I made a rose centerpiece which took me forever to finish.
Thanks everyone
Does anyone here know of a good crochet software programme, that converts images into patterns?I know they exsist but have found one only so far.I am a beginner myself, but my fiance has been crocheting for many years, and has been asking for certain cartoon patterns that have been requested, but these are quite hard to track down-even in graph form..
Texasfem 03-04-2007, 09:33 AM Crochet is the best form of therapy! I enjoy it when I find the time to sit down for hours making beautiful afghans.
Ryan'sWife 03-04-2007, 06:42 PM It's weird I found this post. I asked my Mom to show me how to crochet this past weekend. I'm very interested in it. I want to learn how to make blankets. Anyway - I'm hard to teach cuz I'm left handed. But I'll get it eventually. :)
CelticFerret 03-21-2007, 08:51 PM My current crochet projects are: a baby blanket for my newest great niece who was born this month as a preemie and also a bathroom rug, made out of crochet cotton.

justvicki 03-28-2007, 03:29 AM I lived with a crochet hook in my hand for the four years I was incarcerated. It kept me sane. I even taught crochet classes when I was Alderson. I've been home for four years now and I didn't touch it again until recently. I have tons and tons of patterns.
his#1 bball fan 10-08-2008, 05:55 PM I read all the posts in this thread and can't wait to check them all out to see what I can learn :) I want to become a crochet queen but have a hard time understanding the terms, since I am a newbie ;) at this.
Was hoping some of you ladies were still around so you can help me out. I am trying to work on my first baby blanket but the sides of it look wrong to me :p Kinda crooked...lol. I guess practice will make perfect right?
Anyways...hope to get to talk to you guys soon :) Have a great day!
Patroke Kunzite 11-19-2008, 02:29 AM I learned to crochet when I was little. Only knew a few basic stitches but would come up with my own patterns. It wasn't until 2 years ago that I learned to read a real pattern. But now I sell the stuff I make online.
