Hi. Im in Wisconsin and my ex is in McLennan Unit in Waco, TX. I have been not been able to find much out on this jail, and the mail is slow this week, so Dave cant answer my questions.
Does anyone know what the visits are like, how long, dates/times? I might be makin' a pit stop to TX on my trip to AZ this winter?
Does anyone know an item list of things they can/cant have?
Phone calls, how long, how often can they be made?
Here is the only thing that may "skew" the situation. My ex is being held in a county jail until he is sentanced and placed in a federal prison. Since his anticipated sentance is short 2 years or less *but federal charges* they may keep him in the jail he is at now because of overcrowding. (hes trying to come to wi, but dont know if that will happen bcz of the short sentance.) I am trying to figure out if any of the normal rules that would apply to "regular" inmates would not apply to him bcz hes a federal prisoner. He said they will not give him a job or labor duties because he could be a liability to the county.
Any info anyone has (besides the telephone number I have that) is appreciated.

If he's still in county then the number you have should be able to answer at least the visiting questions. If it is a TDC unit, the phone calls are just 5 minutes every 90 days. But, each county is different on those rules.
Welcome to PTO and good luck! Sorry I wasn't much help.

Okay maybe I can help a tiny bit...
I have no info about that jail which is odd considering I lived in Waco, Tx for five years but taht was before prison was an issue to me!!!
But my uncle is also a federal prisoner witha short term (3 months so very short) he was placed ina county jail in Groesbeck Texas (right outside of Waco) for a month and a half. So it is a similar situation....
He was able to call collect at $15.00 for 30 minutes, then later he bought a phone card at commissary and it was a bit cheaper.
He had visits just like the rest of the county inmates though.. he was only allowed 30 minutes on Sat and Sunday...
Federal Prison gets 6 visits a month and they are approx 6 hours each. At least that's how he gets them now at FCI La Tuna Camp in Anthony. But he didn't get those priveleges when he was at county.
Also, he can not be sent anything but mail.... and yes the post office in Waco Texas is slow... They only have a couple branches and they all close at 5pm...YUK...
Your man should know where he will end up becasue for federal it is my understanding thatthey tell them at court. At least they told my uncle.
Well I wish you luck... Carissa

It's a hard call but if he is facing 2 years...I would think they would transfer him to a federal facility. If and when they do...they can send him anywhere! There is no limits to how close or far. If he gets a judge to recommend a certain location...often times it is given but not a sure thing.
He is still in a Texas prison now...but if you happen to have any questions or concerns over the federal part...please stop by our federal area and we will do our best to help out!

If you need to know about the Texas Department of Criminal Justice rules you can visit their web site. WWW.TDCJ.com (http://www.TDCJ.com) I found out alot of very useful information there. Wish you luck.
