Just got back last night from a wonderful visit with my friend at Newton. It was my first experience visiting someone in prison and it was much better than I expected. The staff was really friendly and tended to try to give you as much privacy as possible. I was surprised to see that Newton was a women's jail, county jail, and had Mexican nationals in addition to AZ inmates. Each category had different visiting restrictions: one couple had to sit in chairs 3 feet apart while couples at the next table were practically in each other's laps; some wore miniskirts and low necklines while they made me change from a skirt that went an inch below my knees. Eat well before your visits because there isn't much of a choice in the vending machines. I was able to visit from 8-5 Sat. and Sun. If you get there early you are likely to have the place to yourselves.
I stayed at the Whispering Pines which is less than 10 minutes away and the staff is very understanding and helpful. It was quiet, set in a forested area with hiking trails and made the weekend feel like a retreat.
The prison is old and falling apart, but my friend is thankful he's there at the moment. It was so good to finally meet him after writing to him for 2 years and see he's just as sweet as I thought he'd be--such a gentleman. I wouldn't have missed this weekend for the world.
