I received this Action alert from Western Prison Project. I think what they are trying to put together is a awesome project.
Call for Submissions for Children of Incarcerated Parents
August 2004
Western Prison Project is working on a project for youth with a parent in prison or jail. Help us spread the word.
Are one or both of your parents in prison or jail?
Would you like to share your experiences in a booklet with other young people like yourself?
The Western Prison Project is putting together a booklet of writings by youth with incarcerated parents about how this situation has impacted their lives. There will be an independent panel of judges that will choose the writers that will receive the awards. This Fall, there will be an award ceremony where prizes will be given and the top 3 writers will
be given a chance to read their work.
Not everything written can be included due to size restrictions. We may use excerpts from bigger pieces as necessary.
Youth will be asked to write an essay, poem or short story about their experience: either a "free write" or by using specific categories and questions. Please do not use fictional stories. Feel free to replace names and places to protect confidentiality, but make sure you are writing your experiences and feelings for this project.
All Pieces should include:
Who is incarcerated?
How long have they been there?
How long do they have to go?
------------------------------------------------------------
Awards are as follows:
* 1st- $50 bookstore certificate $25 music certificate
* 2nd -$25 bookstore certificate $20 music certificate
* 3rd- $15 bookstore certificate $15 music certificate
* 10 honorable mentions-$10 bookstore certificates

Occasionally something needs to be posted in more than one forum and this is one of those times. My wish is that all kids in each state have the opportunity to see it!
