View Full Version : Stick on Tiles, Removing them :(
I need some advice, Im in a sticky (literally situation). I am ripping some stick on tiles off the floor in my kitchen, I went and bought some stuff, to get all the gooey stuff off the floor (it REALLY stinks and doesnt work).
Anyone have any suggestions?
sweetpea 08-16-2004, 10:09 PM Kyla have you tried using sand paper??? OR, now don't laugh, but baby wipes?? I swear, they get off EVERYTHING!! My 4-yr old twin cousins wrote on my computer last year with a sharpie marker (left them alone for 10 seconds, dont try that at home!!), and my cousin whips out a baby wipe and, poof, all gone!! Apparently, baby wipes clean up anything and everything. If those dont work I'll come up with some more amussing suggestions. ;)
Retired-10 08-16-2004, 10:12 PM What about fingernail polish remover? It'll be stinky but it tends to get lots of stuff off. Oh...and what about that Goof-Off stuff? I've used that before and it removed paint from tiles...because I'm an AWFUL painter :)
This stuff here is from the paint shop, I keep having to use it, and walk away (its so strong), its giving me a headache. I am gonna go and try the baby wipes though, I have a whole packet of curash here (praying that works). This stuff is way over bearing. I cant use sandpaper, cause of the flooring underneath.
Curash wipes dont work, what brand did you use Jackie?
sweetpea 08-16-2004, 10:28 PM Kyla I have no idea sweetie, I'm sorry...I will ask my dad for you... he has magic fingers and can fix anything! Now, you say you are trying to get sticks off your floor or sticky stuff on your floor or gooey stuff from groceries??!?! And what is the paint shop stuff for??? I promise if you give me those answers my daddy will be able to help you! :)
sweetpea 08-16-2004, 10:36 PM Ok...Daddy to the rescue ;) He said put a little bit on a rag...Terpentine (aka Mineral Spirits), or Zylene, or keroscene...it should not harm your tile, BUT since you are so far away and we cannot fix it for you if it does (tee hee) first try it somewhere that no one will see, like under a table/chair/etc. I hope this helps Kyla, I'm going to bed, so send me a PM and let me know! :)
Niightdrmr 08-16-2004, 10:45 PM Hi...
I know this might sound stupid but I used duct tape to get the sticky stuff from some of my glued on tiles in my bathroom when I pulled them up... not sure how thick you have it on there, but if you turn the duct tape where its sticky all over and then stick the duct tape on top and pull it up some of it comes up.... I eventually used terpentine ... SMELLS really bad and if I had all day I would have continued to use the duct tape!!! Best of luck hope it works!!!
Kelly
I will try the duct tape, and let you know how it goes. I have turpentine now, and feel AWFUL in the head and stomach. (its a large area, and Im only half way done).
Thanks everyone :) I will let you know how my floor looks later!!!
Rando 08-16-2004, 11:42 PM Kyla..There is a product, made by Jasco, call "floor adhesive remover". It is available at Home Depot, in the flooring department. It works better than anything I've used. It ain't easy..... and it does smell a bit.
baby_bear 08-28-2004, 12:58 PM My girlfriend does apartment maintenance for a living. She said to tell you to use WD-40. It will smell a bit, but will do the job. Use either a putty knife to scrape it, or steel wool. I hope this helps..
mlle_keiko 08-28-2004, 02:19 PM My Mom removed the "sticky" tiles from her kitchen floor...she used a hair dryer to loosen up the "stickyness" and a stiff puddy knife...run the hair dryer over the top of the tile and this will loosen the sticky hold of the tile on the floor and then use the puddy knife to pry the tile off of the floor once it has been heated with the hair dryer
I finished the job :)
I tried everything, putty knifes, etc, and the thing that did it the best... turpentine (It make the whole house smell).
So anyone removing sticky tiles, turpentine is the answer.
Thanks Jacki :D
