http://www.cnn.com/2002/US/04/10/inmate.crash/index.html

PECOS, Texas (CNN) -- A U.S. Marshals Service van transporting federal inmates from El Paso to Odessa crashed Wednesday on Interstate 20 near Pecos, leaving two prisoners dead and injuring 12, officials said.

The identities of the dead and injured -- one guard and 11 prisoners -- were not released. Rudy Carrasco, a spokesman for the Texas Department of Public Safety, said none of the inmates escaped.

The accident happened at 2:30 p.m. when the driver, who was "fatigued," drifted off the roadway, struck a guardrail, and lost control of the van, Carrasco said. The U.S. Marshals Service blamed the wreck on a blown tire.

The van then rolled off the embankment and overturned, killing the two prisoners, he said. The injured were taken to hospitals in Pecos and El Paso.

The van was carrying 13 prisoners and two guards, one of whom was not injured, from El Paso to Ector County Correctional Center in Odessa, said Jack Dean, the U.S. Marshal for the Western District of Texas.

what strikes me is that they talk about none of the prisoners escaping, but only 2 words about 2 men that died :(

makes me sooooo angry! Ok I understand that people probably think about prisoners escaping in a crash (they watch too much tv), but the 2 prisoners that passed away are people too, someones sons, brothers, uncles, nephews, husbands, fathers...Don't just walk over the fact that they died, only because they are prisoners!:pissed:

Way to find it from the other side of the planet, Soraya!
What makes me sick is the Marshals service blames it on a blown tire! My rear-end! I've traveled with those road gladiators.. They drive like complete idiots with an attitude..
Doesn't surprise me one bit.. Just a little more disgusted than before..

Glad it was not your man Shortie!

They sure are.. They were probably also pending sentence if they were being transported between counties / jails. Not even found "guilty" of a crime yet.. But they died at these marshals hands.. BUT at least "none of them escaped".

So glad to hear that it wasnt Anthony!!! You know we will be thinking of you tuesday--

I have a question?? When being transported arent the inamtes shackled and chained?? In a crash can't this cause unnecessary injury or deaths?? hmmm....

This is the sort of thing that makes me so scared that something could happen to Stephen while in these babboons care ....

Yes they are that is why it is so dangerous.. I hate it when he is on the chain for court... I am so nervous until I know he is there and back to the unit... Most of those guards drive like banshies.. they do not care... It is 8 hours for him to get there so I get nervous....

Me too.. It is sad that they did not say any thing about them. Anyone with some on the chain in texas probably was calling the prisons You know it messed up how they do things here... I just want to get him home and be done with all of this mess...

Shortie - I am glad Anthony is okay.

When did inmates stop being human? Just a thought.

Shortie
04-14-2002, 05:03 PM
to most of the guards they think they became below humanity when they went to prison. Most of us have done something in our life that could have gotten us in the same place. SO I try not to be judgemental.
