I simply want to introduce myself and let you know how my heart goes out to all. I am so thankful I found this site. I'm georgelee from Iowa and my good friend is now in the federal system. He will soon be 74, has cancer, and was sentenced to nine years for fraudulent deals that the U.S. Attorney likened to a Ponzi scheme. Enough money was involved that it almost brought down three banks, two of which were very large. The FBI investigated and found there was no fraud involved but the prosecutors kept hammering away. Prior to this he had not even had one day's trouble with the law. All of his life, he has been a well respected, much loved man. Numerous letters were written on his behalf but I don't know if they even had any impact; although, he could have received 68 years so perhaps they did. He was told he would be sent to Yankton or Leavenworth and ended up in Butner. He is working with his attorney and has also asked me to help him see if he can get to one of those camps so that he can be closer to his family. I know nothing about what I can do. Can anyone help? He has only been seen by a PA although he has been told he will be seen by a doctor from the outside. I am so worried about him. Sorry for the length of this and thank you.

Georgelee:
He was placed there because of the sophistication of the crime and his illness. If he gets moved or transfered at all it will probably be to a medical facility - closest to you is Springfield MO or Rochester MN. He will not ever go to a camp.

Medical issues are always a 2 edged sword - they serve to mitigate and then are seen as aggravated cases by the FBOP since they have to manage them medically. Sounds to me like the Judge decided that a 9 year sentence for him was = to the huge sentence the government wanted given his age and illness - both are life sentences. He should save his $ and lose the attorney - and try to be a low key, kind and model inmate. Most important he should make an effort at sucking it up and not complaining, then after about six months he can work with his counselor on a transfer to one of the medical facilities. If he's really sick - he can ask you and any family or friends he has on the outside to work with someone (post-coviction expert) to request a compassionate release with the Bureau. The only way it'll work is if he is not a squeeky wheel and if he is on his death bed. I realize this sounds blunt and cold - but I wanted you to know the truth. After working in and out of the Bureau for over 20 years, this advise is golden.

Thank you. Sadly, we knew it was a life sentence.

Oh thank you, I was really feeling down after advocate's response. Just because we are older folks does not mean that we don't hurt just as much as younger ones with folks in the system. I just feel as if we have a double whammy right now. Our son is in Iraq and this is just more than we can bear.

I was in FCC-Butner Medium Security. Fortunately I was not ill while in there, however, I found that most got decent health care when they demanded it.
He will need to stand up for his rights if care is not provided. There is also a Federal Medical facility in Butner which he might go to. He will be seen by doctors on the outside when those can be arranged.
I wish him the best of luck.
