*Please Note*
PTO has its own inclusive chat and no longer supports the chat site mentioned below. That site was transfered to another person and later closed.
The New Chat site is now open!
*Please read this email completely. I am only offering limited support until the site is fully up and operational. We are currently only testing the new site! Reading this message completely will help insure that you gain access to the chat room.
The new Chat site, The Prison Chat Network (www.PrisonChat.net (http://www.prisonchat.net/)) is now open, but still in the testing phase. The website template is still under construction so you will not see the final version of what the site itself will look like, BUT you will get to use the chat interface. The back-end was completed this morning with the exception of a few graphical adds and other miscellaneous modifications.
This new chat site will be taking the place of the current chat window located on PTO. Shortly, I will be forwarding the ¡§Chat¡¨ link on PTO to this location. The first chat room, named General Prison Talk, is our default room. We are currently hosting two other rooms, but to get to them, you first have to go through our main room. Those two other rooms are for Thundering Drums & Prisoner Life. You can get to those by clicking on ¡§Channels¡¨ once you get to the main chat room.
Prior to anyone being able to get into the chat room, you will have to register at the new site. You can do this by clicking on ¡§Register¡¨ when you come to the temporary chat page. (Grey steel looking menu) It is a simple process where you enter the NickName that you want to use, a password, and your email address. You must enter a valid email address to gain access. You will receive an email with a confirmation link you must click on. After that process, you will be able to log in to the main chat room.
*PTO Members, please use the same NickName as you have on PTO so we will know who you are.
*When registering, do not use any blank spaces or wild characters in your name. They may be rejected by the chat server. For example: Cat¡¦s Meow The way I recommend you register this is ¡§catsmeow¡¨.
After you have registered and go back to the chat menu, you can click on ¡§Chat Now¡¨. When you do this a pop-up window will appear and you will be prompted to enter your name and password. You need to enter this information exactly as you have entered it in the Registration form or it will not work.
Once you have entered your name and password into the pop-up access box, the chat applet will appear. It takes a few moments for it to connect to the server. Once this has completed you will see some information scroll in front of you and you will be in the main channel, PrisonTalk.
You will know you are in the right place when you see ¡§HQ¡¨ or ¡§@HQ¡¨ in the user list on the top right hand corner on the chat window. He is the official chat bot, and will make sure everyone has the appropriate access. He is NOT human, so don¡¦t feel bad when he doesn¡¦t respond to you. ƒº
If you would like to check out the other rooms that we currently have, you can click on the ¡§channels¡¨ button (which will be renamed to rooms soon) and a pop-up list of the other rooms will appear. All you have to do is click on the one you want to visit to go there. The Chat Help room is actually a public room for other people on the network, but you are welcome to go there and ask any chat related questions that you may have. I suggest that you direct these questions to ¡§Douglas¡¨ or ¡§Doug¡¨. He is the one that knows about our custom chat window. The other people will most likely have no idea of the existence of PrisonTalk, etc.
There is not a lot else to say at this moment. Please keep in mind we are NOT finished with the chat room. In the next week you will see the completed graphics site at [NEW LOCAL CHAT LINK HERE AT PTO]http://www.prisontalk.com/forums/chat.phpand it will be much easier to navigate. The person I had original contracted to do this work backed out on me after the deadline, leaving me searching for someone else to assist me in getting the front end graphical work completed.
One other thing I would like to mention is that you may see a member inside the chat room named ¡§Douglas¡¨ or ¡§Doug¡¨. He is the gentleman that has spent many hours working with me to build a custom chat interface for us. He is also the Administrator for the chat network that we use and a great guy. If you see him in the room, please let him know we appreciate his help with out new live chat program. He will also be assisting me when anyone has any chat related problems.
*****SPECIAL NOTICES ¡V PLEASE READ*****
** NOTE TO AOL USERS! It is always best to use another browser besides the standard AOL browser. To do this, all you have to do is download and use a copy of Internet Explorer. (the newer the version, the better) While you are logged on to AOL, open up the Internet Explorer browser and use it instead of the AOL browser. There is no special setup needed to use your AOL connection with another browser. I actually recommend it for your entire internet surfing since AOL¡¦s browser seems to have problems with many of the Internet standards today.
**IF YOU GET A POP-UP BOX ASKING YOU IF YOU WANT TO USE JAVA, YOU MUST ACCEPT IT TO ACCESS CHAT. Many of you will get a pop-up notice asking you if you want to either install or use a Java Applet. You must do this to use our web chat. It is completely safe. Click ¡§Accept¡¨ or ¡§Accept Always¡¨. Some of the newer versions have a ¡§Grant Permission¡¨ option. If you do not accept this, you will not be able to access chat, and it may be hard for you to change this setting if you change your mind in the future.
**Internet Security Settings ¡V Many people have had problems in the past using PTO because their Internet Security Settings were set to high, or they did not accept cookies. Be sure you Internet Security Settings are NOT set on HIGH (Medium is recommended), and that you do allow cookies.
**Live Chat Moderators Wanted! - In the near future we will be assigning channel operator status to a number of members at PrisonChat.net that are both active and knowledgeable about live chat. If you are online quite a bit and interested in becoming a chat moderator, please send an email to the address listed below expressing your interest in becoming one.
**Please do not e-mail or PM me at PTO. If you would like to talk about the new chat room on PTO, please use the forum ¡§Live Chat Scheduling, Q & A, Etc¡¨ located at the very bottom of the PTO forums list on the main page under PTO ¡V LIVE CHAT, or you can use this link:
http://www.prisontalk.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?forumid=80
(If the link is broken, you may need to cut and paste this from the email to your browser window. Often links this long do not transfer to email well.)
Thanks and hope everyone enjoys our latest addition!!
