Hello. I've been reading some of the entries in this Forum and already I feel a small sense of relief in that I'm not alone here. My husband and I live in Japan so it made it very difficult to keep in contact with our son. He wasn't allowed to call collect for international calls and the Prison charged $1.00 per minute for calls made internationally. (I won't get into highway robbery here.) In some of our last correspondence, he mentioned San Bernardino and Colorado. I suppose we'll need to keep checking the website for updates on his whereabouts and the duration of his sentence. We aren't too clear on that either. This site, from the fraction that I've read, has already given me hope for what will come in the future. I'll now have a place to share my concerns and read loved ones offering warmth, kindness and understanding to each other.

Thank you.

Hello All! My name is Karen and my boyfriend is in the Federal Prison. He was sentenced to 36 months and I am so CONFUSED!!!
He has been moved around so many times it is not funny and then they sent him to a Boot Camp and because he tore his ligaments in his knee, he was medically discharged. So now he has to go back in the system but now they are sending him to Arkansas. Could someone please tell me if he would be eligible to file for a clemency and if so, would he do it through Arkansas since he is on his way there or would it have to be from the state that sentenced him (TN).
I appreciate all the help I can get.
Thanks!
Karen

Thank you all for the kind welcome. I've got good news since my initial post. It seems my son was/is in San Bernadino. I received a letter from him dated July 25th stating that he was going to be there for a week before transferring to Sheridan, OR. I'm slightly relieved, at least I know where he is and where he's heading to.

The "unknown" is often the worst part of all of this... It's always great to feel a sense of relief, and Sheridan...we have a couple with loved ones there, hopefully they can assist if you have any questions.

Mocha...I'm hooked on the I.C. Mocha at Panera Breads...hooked! :p

I just rechecked the BOP website to see if he had been moved to Sheridan; lo' and behold, he's in neither San Bernadino nor Sheridan. He's listed as being in MDC Los Angleles. Is it normal practice to shift them around so frequently? I don't understand the logic behind this? What are the difference between the following facilities?

1. FCC - Federal Correctional Complex
2. FCI - Federal Correctional Institution
3. FDC - Federal Detention Center
4. FMC - Federal Medical Center
5. FPC - Federal Prison Camp
6. FTC - Federal Transfer Center
7. MCC - Metropolitan Correctional Center
8. MCFP - Medical Center for Federal Prisoners
9. MDC - Metropolitan Detention Center
10. USP - U.S. Penitentiary

Any help is greatly appreciated.

In the past three days I've had three different locations of my son. First of all, he was moved from FDC Honolulu. When I originally checked the BOP website, it listed him as being in TRANSIT. I recieved a letter from him yesterday (which was dated July 25th) and he said he was in San Bernadino MDC. He stated he'd be there for approximately 1-2 weeks then on to Sheridan. I took a chance and checked the BOP locator last night and it showed him as being in MCC Los Angeles. I just checked the locator a few minutes ago and now he's listed as being in FCI Dublin. As you can imagine, I'm frustrated and worried. I've sent him mail and I seriously wonder if he'll ever recieve it. How can they possibly deliver the mail if they seem to not know where he'll be tomorrow?

Does anyone have any information on the mail delivery for inmates who are on an endless journey from one facility to another?

Hi Mochamom,
I believe that the BOP will try to forward it on but I have heard a lot of stories contrary to that... It really is a toss up.. Hopefully he has settled by now and you can have a more fixed address.

mocha...join the crowd of IBM(i've been moved) not feds...lol
i know it's not funny really.....my son has moved 15 times since november of 2003...mostly cause the feds have to go half way around the world to get to their elbow....hopefully your son will get a permanent address soon....
it's crazy...
take care

hey, ive been reading your posts, and i am going to give this site address to my mother so that she can also have the same feeling of comfort that you have. i was just sentenced to 16 months as my first offense, and i will most likely be sent to sheridan, and just maybe, i will meet your son, and tell him hi. i hope that i meet some nice people in there. i am not a prison going type. i have never been in trouble, im a senior at WAZZU studying nursing, and i am into adventure sports like rockclimbing, whitewater kayaking, and skydiving, sooo, its gonna really be a bummer. anyways, i hope that you are doing ok and that you are smiling, cause you know what, everything happens for a reason. bye bye.

Welcome to PTO! I believe in "everything happens for a reason" and we 'can' grow from everything as well...one way or the other!

Best of luck to you...things will all work out! We have some information on Sheridan FCI somewhere in the info folder. Be sure to share with your mom...we will be happy to have her!

Any help is greatly appreciated.

The FCI's house low level to medium level inmates
The FMC's house all levels
The FTC's are a "stopping place" on the way to the inmates destination
The USP's are for high level inmates
The FPC's house low level, nonviolent inmates who normally have less than 10 yrs to serve.
The others, I'm not sure of. Welcome to PTO! :)

I see you are writing from Japan, if your son is not a US citizen you need to contact your consulate either in DC or SanFrancisco. They will help you and keep tabs on where your son is moved to. Also you need to contact www.prisonersabroad.com (http://www.prisonersabroad.com) immediately. Ask to speak with Theo, but they are all very kind and helpful...

Good Luck We are all here for each other so keep us informed as to what is going on. I am a UK citizen and have gathered loads of info re foreigners in prison, PM if you want to talk in depth.
