Does anyone here make candles or soap as a hobby? I've just recently started. Soap making was kinda boring. :( Hopefully creating candles will be better, since there is a lot more involved.

I used to make candles when I was a kid. I remember we used to melt down crayons to make them! They were always one-of-a-kind gifts for the grandparents! How's the candle making going, Denise?

I got the soap making kit as a xmas present one year, and I really enjoyed it. But the local store quit carrying the glycerian blocks. I used candy trays, novelty trays and soap trays for molds. We made lots of christmas baskets the followinf year, plus birthday, wedding, easter. The kids teachers loved them.

I have always wanted to do both, never found how to make them.
If anyone can offer the advice on how to get started I would love to learn.

Me too, I wanted to learn how to make candles, because i love them so much, I have them all around my tub, in all 3 bedrooms in the house and even the living room too. I bet it would be much cheaper if I learned how to make my own Huh?

I agree, I am the same way... I have always wanted to make them, thought that I would like doing something like that. :)
There just aint nothing any better then soaking in a hot tub with a bunch of candles setting around making the light :)

What do you all use to melt the candle wax? A double boiler? Something special? I've been saving tons of wax but not sure what I need to melt it all.

I make soap!I started it about 4 years ago and love it! Many people have suggested candlemaking to go with it, but I really don't have an interest in candles. Dabbled a wee bit with them and gave it up. However, looking to make some wax tarts sometime.

I have been making candles for about 2 years now. I have the kids decorate the holders and pick the scent of the candle and they give them to teachers, grandparents, aunts etc.

If you are acquainted with a beekeeper and can get beeswax (even the "raw" stuff--PM me if you need to know how to clean and purify it), that makes some incredible candles.

Friend of mine got into soapmaking for a while some years ago. Strangely, unlike practically everything else these days, it is generally cheaper to buy the supplies locally than through an online seller or eBay. Cost of shipping more than makes up for the difference due to the weight.

Speaking of wax....the local newspaper gave me 25 or so pounds of pasteup wax when they finally stopped doing page setups using this method. I'd thought it would make fine candles, but it doesn't set up well and sticks to the molds. Now I have to come up with a use for it....am thinking of dipping pinecones in melted wax to use as campfire starters.

I make soaps, lotions, lip balms, shampoos, and conditioners. Also moisturizing bars. I'm starting to dabble with perfume scents, but I'm not so into that. I actually sell some of my stuff to help support my hobby.

I used to make the soaps, lotions, etc. but haven't done it in a while. I need to get back into it as I am out of my own soap at the moment. I prefer to make and use castile soap but have made others.

Are you making soap or candles? (Sorry, the thread says soap & candles so I'm a bit confused).

Is there any federal prisons that allow you to make crafts like that? That's one thing I'd love to do, with my time. Make stuff. I used to be great with wood shop, and making bookcases and things in school. Also know quite a bit about candle making, and have also been interested in cheese making too.

Recipes......I love collecting recipes on stuff you can make yourself! Like soap, lotions, lip balms, shampoos, and conditioners.....!

I do that not for profit, instead to save money and as SOMEDAY I want to go live out in the middle of no where as far from civilization as I can! and rely on myself. Know what I mean?
