A man who the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office arrested Monday had walked off an Atlanta city work program earlier this month, the Atlanta Department of Corrections verified Wednesday.
James Robert Hentze, 49, had been serving a 30-day sentence for disorderly conduct when he walked away from a cleanup project on July 15, spokeswoman Gayle Middlebrook said. Hentze had only seven days left to complete his sentence, Middlebrook said.

The Atlanta Department of Corrections houses only misdemeanor offenders.

Hentze remained at the Beaufort County Detention Center Wednesday with $35,000 in bond set for charges of grand larceny and possession of a controlled substance, according to the jail log.

The Sheriff's Office said Tuesday that he had pending charges in Georgia for a home burglary, an auto theft and walking away from the work program.

The Beaufort County Drug Task Force arrested a man wanted in Georgia in connection with several crimes who also has been linked to musical equipment stolen from a Hilton Head Island church, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.
James Robert Hentze, 49, was arrested after a tip led the task force to an apartment in the Heron Lake neighborhood on Mathews Drive, the Sheriff's Office said. Hentze was arrested at about 1:40 a.m. Monday and remained at the Beaufort County Detention Center without bond on Tuesday afternoon, according to the jail log.

When arrested Monday, Hentze was in possession of a prescription narcotic and a stolen vehicle from Georgia, according to the Sheriff's Office. Authorities in Atlanta have pending charges for his arrest in connection with breaking into a home, stealing a car and escaping from jail, the Sheriff's Office said.

The Sheriff's Office identified Hentze as an escapee from the Atlanta City Department of Corrections, but a public information officer for the jail said they have no record of him and no current escapees. The Fulton, DeKalb and Cobb county jails in the Atlanta metropolitan area also said they had no record of Hentze having escaped.

The Georgia Department of Corrections said Hentze was released from prison on June 29 after serving a three-year sentence for burglary.

Hentze was wanted as of July 15 and is thought to have been in the Hilton Head area working as an electrician since the middle of the month, the Sheriff's Office said.

A press release states that the Sheriff's Office expects to charge Hentze with grand larceny in connection with the theft of guitars, amplifiers and other musical equipment from the island's Central Church, where he was a subcontractor. Current charges listed at the jail include fugitive from justice, violating Beaufort County Drug Court in 2001 and possession of a controlled substance.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I am a little confused. Did he or did he not escape? Or is it one group saying he did not and one group saying he did? Our system is kind of confusing, no wonder we have so many issues.
