I was wondering if anyone knows, how long can they keep someone in reception. My boyfriend has been in reception at San Quentin now for about 3 months. I'm curious cause he's going crazy!
Thanks to anyone that can help.

Moving this over to the California forum, hopefully you will get some help over there!

Well that all depends. Is he there on a parole violation or is he waiting to
get mainlined? If he is there on a parole violation and his time is short, then
they won't mainline him. If he is there to serve a term, then I would suspect
that he is waiting to be either mainlined at San Quentin or is waiting to be
shipped to another prison. I know a few inmates that sat in reception for 6
months before they were sent to another prison. It all depends on space,
if another prison has the room, he will be shipped, if not, then he will have
to sit and wait. That's what all of us that have loved ones sitting in reception
has to do, sit and wait and kick it till the state decides who to ship who to
and fro. Suzi

Back in 2000 when my fiance was in reception at San Quentin he was there for about 2 months, but now with all the over crowding you're lucky to get transferred in 3-4 months. Unfortunately because of all the overcrowdings in the prisons right now, it's going to be a waiting process....a long waiting process.
My advice though is that since he is in reception at SQ you are allowed to send him pre-stamped envelopes, paper, pens & pencils correct? Send him lots of pre-stamped envelopes that way he will have enough to trade for hygene & food when he gets to the mainline he will be doing his time at. The reason I say this is because the money he has on his books will take a while to get on his books at the new prison, and as soon as he gets there he can trade the pre-stamped envelopes for items that ne needs. Again, just a suggestion.
