PrincessMami 02-11-2005, 06:37 PM Does anyone know how long it takes to be approved on a visiting list. My fiance is currently at waupun correctional. and i was just wondering how long it will take before i can see him. i sent the form in about a week and a half ago. if anyone could help i would appreciate it.! Thanks!
robb676 02-11-2005, 07:08 PM My fiancee is in Taycheedah. It took me about 3 weeks to here from them, but because I didnt put all of my info on it it was delayed by another 3 weeks. Just make sure you put all your past convictions down on the visitors form. they dont care about your past, they just want you to put all it down. I found out the hard way and there were going to make me wait 6 months to reapply and I had to appeal to the Warden to get reconsidered.
Babyboys Mama 06-01-2005, 08:53 PM My son is currently at KMCI. Can you tell me how long it is for his vistors to get on his list

susie2555 08-11-2005, 04:20 PM My brother has been at Waupun for a year, then I look on Vinelink and see that he is at a "supervised living facility @WIN, that is all that it says. Do you know where this is?? I tried to find out where this is with no luck , and all the living facilities I saw were for guys on the way out and that can't be my brother as he has life with no parole. Any ideas??thanks
susie2555 08-16-2005, 04:20 PM I would like to send some magazines to an inmate (not as a subscription). Can they be sent thru the mail if purchased from a store? Like Borders or Wal Mart?
4ever2gether 08-16-2005, 07:27 PM I would like to send some magazines to an inmate (not as a subscription). Can they be sent thru the mail if purchased from a store? Like Borders or Wal Mart?
No, you can not mail items directly that you purchase from a store. For magazines, the easiest is subscriptions, unless you find a bookstore that will mail it out direct for you to your loved one from the store along with a receipt. Amazon.com is a good place to order books and magazine subscriptions online.
kirkandann 08-20-2005, 09:51 PM can you tell me anything about msdf. my fiance is going there at the end of sept. for 90 days in the AIR program?? it is their aoda program. visitation? anything you know would be so appreciated!!!!!
Richies Sis WI 09-26-2005, 10:21 PM Hi there. My brother right now is still in the county jail, but soon (not sure when) he will be transported to Dodge. Any info on Dodge would be a great help. I am not sure how that part goes, the evaluation & assessment?
Not sure if we can write, visit, etc...
Also if anyone knows, is it a real bad place? I am so worried about him. He is also scared, he cant sleep. This sucks.... I just hate it. Trying to cope and help him as much as possible. Any advice will be greatly appreciated! Thanx!
Richies Sis WI 09-26-2005, 11:37 PM Also, I guess you can try to request what prison you are sent too? Is this true?
Does anyone know of the prisons in WI, if there is truly such a thing?
I would like to let my brother know. So far it seems like OshKosh is the best, any advice?? I live in Green Bay and my Mom an hour north of me (Marinette) so we dont want to have to drive for too long, but yet still prefer him to be in the best place. I would rather drive an extra distance than to have him closer, but in a prison that is the worst. Anyone know what the GB prison is like?
Feel free to PM me, I would really love some input.
I am a newbie here so I am still learning w/ getting around the site! Ugh...

Well, first off, Green Bay is a Max security prison. OshKosh is a Med security. So depending on what level security he'll be going to, Green Bay would be closest for Max, and OshKosh would be closest for a Med. Sometimes they will try to honor requests to specific prisons. But alot of times that is only when they are seeing the PRC (program review committee) going from a Max to a Med, or Med to a Minimum. Honestly though, I really feel that you should stress to your brother to make due with whatever atmosphere he is placed in. I feel that the closer family is to the inmate, the better the facility is anyway.
My man was in Green Bay for a few years (now in Jackson CI in Black River Falls, which is a Med.). No prison is a picnic (specially in WI!).
Good Luck with whatever prison he is placed in.
Richies Sis WI 09-28-2005, 12:16 AM Thanks Sarafina for your response. How was Green Bay as far as visits and stuff?
How did your man do there? It would be nice to have him in Green Bay, or OshKosh cuz of the location. I believe he will be max, so hopefully then he'll go to Green Bay. It is just 10 minutes for me to visit then and I could go as often as they'll let me! That would be great for us all!!!!!
I will give him your advice about making due wherever he is sent, thanx! I want to give him as much info. & advice as I possibly can to try and help him out. He is a first timer and scared shitless! I am so worried about him.
Thanx again! Take care!

Green Bay is ok. A bit hectic to get in (passing security clearance) but isn't that true with all Max security? It's really really busy when the 'free' bus comes up from Milwaukee (a free bus for visitors coming from Milwaukee). I think they come on Monday's and Saturday's, but that may be different now. All I can say is don't ever wear any metal (underwire bra's especially). Their metal detector is real real sensitive! The visiting room is not all that great, but that's because the building is so old. Most of the CO's and guard's are rather nice (from a visitor stand point).
Best advice to give your brother is to just go with the flow of things, and prepare himself to be treated like a number (a DOC number....) and not a human. Some of those guards I swear have no hearts or feelings, but that's how they have to be in the prison industry. Tell him to remind himself they are doing their job, and not to take it all too personally. Your brother cannot be head-strong or arguementive whatsoever. That will land him punishment because the guards view this as being insubordinate. Also tell him he can expect about 10% of respect from anyone in the prison system. Anyone, inmates or officials. That's the best info you can give him to prepare him.
Hope this helps. PM me if you need anything.
Richies Sis WI 09-29-2005, 12:23 AM Thank you Sarafina for the info & advice. I will pass on what you said and I know he will take the advice and appreciate it greatly. My brother was transported this morning to Dodge. I am so scared and worried about him. I know he has got to be freakin' out! I cant help but think how he is feeling. I wish I could talk to him.
I just find it so sad that they arent treated as "people" anymore. That is going to be hard on my brother. I am scared he may be a target since he is so "soft" and naive. He doesnt even have size to help him out. I'm SO scared for him.
I am glad you told me about the underwire issue. That is a good thing to know, I also informed my Mom because most likely we would have had to find out the hard way. Thanx so much again! I really am so glad I found this site, it has helped me out a lot.
spotlover0524 09-29-2005, 04:47 PM He can get mail in Dodge, and can send it out. I believe they get something like 2 stamps to start out?
He can also make phone calls, collect. Believe that is only once a week on a certain day of the week.
Just write to him as often as you can, let him know your there and whats going on and that will help. The letters are what keeps my guy going. Even if it's a quick card.
Richies Sis WI 09-29-2005, 10:44 PM Thanks spotlover. Thsi site is the best. I love having support and getting the advice, info, and the kind words of understanding. It really helps!
You take care! Thanx again.
Richies Sis WI 09-30-2005, 01:18 AM Hi again. I have a question about sending money to Dodge. Can I send a money order along with my letter? I have read a couple different answers, but they were not recent at all. Can I send personal checks?
Am I able to send him photo's? Is there a limit on how many?
Also I have heard that prisons take a percentage out of the amount you send to an inmate, is this true?
Wow, there is so much to learn!
Do I need to send clothes? I guess he will only have whatever he was wearing when they transported him?
Does everything you send have to come from a company?
I wanted to send him a little brag book photo album, can I do so?
So many questions!!! Sorry, I'm new to this.
Thanx everyone.
The support here is just unbelievable! I felt very alone until finding Prison Talk.
I miss my little brother!!!!!!!!!!!!! :(
spotlover0524 09-30-2005, 11:05 AM Hey Richies Sis:
The address for Dodge Correctional is:
Mail: P.O. Box 800
Waupan, WI 53963 *rmemeber to include his DOC # next to his name.
Money Orders (only) to:
P.O. Box 700
Again be sure his DOC# on envelope and I would always write it
next to my guys name on the MO itself. Send him a note and let
him know you sent it. They do take a % to put in an account for
that Grand Day when they are released back to us :)
Photos: can NOT be polaroids at all. Yes, they can have 25 photos, you
can swap, when he's done w/some exchange them. Not sure on the brag book, you can call 920-324-5577 and check w/the property room.
As far as sending clothes, yes some stores mail to Institutions, WalMart, Kohls, you can check w/the store, but the receipt has to go with it. Their is a mail order catalog Marcus something or other, the phone and address is on this website somewhere.
I would maybe hold off sending him things, except the MO, because he will be transferred out of Dodge. My guy was in two months, then went way up north to a county jail in Eagle River on a state contract cause no room at the inn! He was there 3 months and now has been transferred to where he can get the programs he needs.
Hang in there. If lyou ever want to talk - yoou can PM me.
Just keep writing to him-cards, notes, post cards, letters. Mail is probably the highlight of their day.
Tare care.
Spot
Richies Sis WI 09-30-2005, 06:47 PM Thank you so much Spot!! Awesome info. Thanx for the phone # too. Now I dont have to try to find it. :) It seems from what I have read ~ that 2 months is about the norm time spent in Dodge. So, holding off on sending some things is a good idea. Thank you. Does whatever he does get while there go with him when he is transfered?
That makes sense to take out a small amount for that wonderful day! I was wondering why they did that.
Thanx again, I am starting to really like you! :) Yer so helpful!
spotlover0524 10-03-2005, 08:12 AM Yes, average time @ Dodge is about 2 months. Yes they will forward whatever possessions he has to next location. I would definitely send him a MO, that follows him too, then he get stamps when they get canteen.
And he can also order himself little treats, like candy :)
Good to hear back from you. Glad to be of help!
tasha72 10-12-2005, 08:44 PM Spotlover, My husband just left Dodge, the mailing address is PO Box 700, the money address is PO Box 800. If you don't send stuff to the right address, it will get returned. Other than letters, cards, pictures and money sent to them, they can have NOTHING in A&E. They cannot get magazine subscriptions, or newspapers, they can't have any other property, they can only have clothes that Dodge issues, so you can't send any extra items. They are locked in their cells 23 out of 24 hours a day with only 1 hour of rec time a day. He can have visitors there but only immediate family and I'm not sure if siblings count, it is parents, grandparents, spouse (no fiancees) and the children of the inmate. For the 1st 30 days he is allowed 1 one hour visit per week and after 30 days he will be allowed 2 two hour visits per week. You must be approved on his visiting list (he will have to send out forms for anyone he wants to visit him and you have to fill them out and mail them back and wait to be approved, usually takes 10-14 days) and once you are, you will follow him from prison to prison. Only he would be able to remove you from his list. He is allowed 1 15 minute phone call per week total for the whole time he is there. My husband just got moved yesterday to New Lisbon so he finally has more freedom because it is a medium. He got his property that he had at Dodge today, so they were pretty quick about that. They said it takes about a week for his inmate account to catch up with him as well as his visitor list. He can now have a tv and radio. At Dodge they are not allowed to have tv's or radios, nor do they have any they can watch or listen to. They are allowed to get passes to the library though so they can have books to read which at least gives them something to do. Prepare to have your brother go a little stir crazy though, it is tough being locked up in an 8X10 cell with another person 23 hours a day. He won't have much contact with other inmates except during rec time and meals, but as long as he follows the rules, he will be OK. Any other questions, I'd be happy to help. My husband was there 3 months. Oh and what is your brother in for? That could determine if he goes to med or max. My husband was told he was going to max and madison overrode it just last week, he got his paperwork back and it said medium. And yes they are given a choice of prisons when they meet with their classification specialist. My husband wasn't given a choice for med only max because that is where they said he was going, so Madison made the choice for him, but he is appealing the decision because he got sent across the state from me.

boerumbear2001 11-11-2005, 09:41 PM I am trying to find out info on Gordon. Can anyone help me out? My man is heading there next month from the way that it sounds.
Richies Sis WI 11-14-2005, 12:13 AM My brother was just staffed and will be coming to Green Bay. Not sure exactly when; but it will sure make it easy for me to visit him. I don't have to travel at all, the prison is just a few minutes on the highway from my house! Yay!!!
I hope the Green Bay prison is ok for him. My main concern in just that he will be ok as I worry so much about him!
I can't wait to be able to see him since I am not allowed to visit him at Dodge.
Hopefully his appeal will help and I can visit with him anytime I please and not have to do it through the prison system!!! Pray for him please!
Thanx much everyone!
mommyelf 11-14-2005, 06:24 PM Hi
My son has been in GBCI for almost 5 months now. He started out in an 8' x 12' cell and then he was moved to the dorm. The dorm is where everyone really wants to be placed because it is just a room with lots of beds set up like a barracks. There is an activity area with TVs and a kitchen type area. They can also do their own laundry. Everyone in the dorm really tries to behave because they don't want to be kicked out and sent to a cell.
While your brother is in receiving, he will most likely be in one of the 8' x 12' cells. He should be moved to a more permanant area in about 2-3 weeks. The meal schedule in the receiving cells is kind of strange. They eat breakfast and lunch really close together. If your brother is quiet and respectful during his time in receiving, he is more likely to be a candidate for the dorm.
Visiting is pleasant. At first, the impression that you get about the building is that it is cold, old, gloomy, depressing. After a few visits, you realize that the building has character and most of the employees that you deal with are friendly. There is a handicap visitation room that you can use if you go with someone who cannot walk up stairs. The handicap room is really nice. My dad and I use it when he visits. You have to reserve it 2 days in advance and you can have up to 7 visitors in it during a visit. We had a nice birthday visit for my son with his grandparents in the handicap room.
God Bless

Richies Sis WI 11-14-2005, 08:12 PM Thanks so much for the info Mommyelf! I really appreciate it! I'm glad to hear that visiting is pleasant, I was kinda nervous about it. I now feel better!
Hopefully my brother will end up in a dorm where your son is, It sounds a lot nicer.
He is a real laid back guy, just an all around nice guy, not a trouble maker at all. So I hope that is a good possibility for him instead of a cell. 5 months really isnt that long either to be moved to that area. I would have tought it would take longer. Very good! I bet your son is a lot happier in the dorm.
Well thanx again and maybe I'll see you around in the visiting area someday.
Take care,
Tammi
debhp 11-17-2005, 02:07 PM does anyone know information on milwaukee secure detention center here in milwaukee need lots of info
Richies Sis WI 01-18-2006, 12:38 AM I wanted to share this:
From the January 16th People's Forum, Green Bay Press Gazette
Supermax prison wastes tax money
SUAMICO - The supermax prison, now known as The Wisconsin Secure Program Facility in Boscobel, is supposedly intended for the state's most dangerous inmates. At a cost of $57,000 per inmate per year, it is not intended for the nonviolent offender, the mentally ill, juveniles or the elderly.
This facility offers little to no mental-health care, few educational opportunities, and minimal drug rehabilitation programming.
The inmates often return to our communities with the same problems they entered with, except intensified by harsh conditions. Inmates are in total isolation almost 24 hours a day, have no contact with other humans except when food trays are shoved back and forth through a slit in the door.
Inmates are often denied reading materials while spending years in six-foot by 12-foot kennels.
The media and the public are not allowed access to the facility, or information about its inhabitants or the prison's policies. More than 350 people are housed there; most of them do not require such a severe prison. Some inmates are elderly with medical problems. I urge you to contact the governor and request a serious review of this facility.

d-end's 01-25-2006, 12:51 PM Hi everyone,

Thank you!
Sarafina 01-25-2006, 02:12 PM Hi everyone,

Hi there,
I suggest contacting the facility that your loved one is at (or having your loved one contact someone within the facility) to see if you can get a 'special' visitation (extended hours, or extra visits, etc). Each facility has different requirements pertaining to these special visits. I've heard of a few different requirements: certain amount of miles must be traveled (ie- the visitor is traveling more than 200 miles to visit), or the visitor must be coming from out of state, etc. My loved one is in JCI (Black River Falls) and their requirement is the visitor must be coming from out of state (in which I'm about 2 miles from the MN border, so it sucks to be me!- No special visits here unless I move 2 miles away).
After finding out what kind of special visits you are allowed, then plan accordingly. Figure out how long you can travel for, how much $ you want to invest in a hotel room (if that is an option- some people do it all in a day- but seeing as you are in Chicago, you'd probably want to stay overnight in Waupun at least one night), etc.
Personally, my trip takes only 2.5 hours, so sometimes I'll travel down to see him and back in one day. Sometimes I stay overnight so I can visit him once each day and then drive home.
Good Luck!
Lynnsy 01-25-2006, 02:31 PM D-end's, you might want to call Waupun Corr. at 920-324-5571 and ask about "special" visits (extended visits for those traveling far). Here's general visit info for WI prisons from the WI Dept. of Corrections:
http://www.wi-doc.com/DAI_Visiting_Policy.htm
Waupun is 90 min. northwest of Milwaukee. I don't think Milwaukee's downtown freeway construction project will affect you, but you can check http://www.muchange.com/ for closings, etc. Directions to each prison are at
http://www.wi-doc.com/directions%20to%20insts%20and%20co.pdf . Remember that there are two different prison in the town of Waupun (Waupun Correctional & Dodge Correctional). They're almost down the street from each other and you wouldn't want to end up at the wrong one :-) Enjoy your visit.

munchie 01-26-2006, 06:01 PM  I just returned from vacation in Hawaii. My husband and I had this planned a long time, before we knew about my son's incarceration. I needed the time away to process, but I felt guilty , I wrote him every day I was there. I will mail him more letters. Tomorrow is the first time that he will be allowed to have me visit him. He wants me to feel sorry for him, and I do , but I am still pretty frustrated that he is there in the first place. He says he has enough hassles just being there. I cannot imagine how awful it must be, and yet I still feel that I have issues with this too. How can I bridge the gap, be supportive and yet expect change in attitude when he gets out. He has been irresponsible in so many ways, I want to be supportive, but I cannot carry the load and make up for all of the mistakes :blah: Guess I am still frustrated and angry at him because he is there . I need to find a way to love him that is helpful ANY SUGGESTIONS

mggwife 03-27-2006, 09:04 PM You can send mags but they have to be from the store. The store has to mail them and make sure you tell them to put a receipt in there or they wont let it in.

d-end's 05-10-2006, 12:56 PM Hi,
I'm writing in hopes you can give me some info on Waupan. My really special friend is there and i am trying to visit. The problem is I am from Chicago so making travel arrangements have been hard. I don't drive at the moment but if i did i still wouldn't know how to get there. Any Advice? I can get to Fond De Lac but where I go from there?
d-end's 05-10-2006, 01:02 PM this is d-end's again wanted to know which way was closet and better Milwaukee or Fond De Lac; any close by hotel, over night spots anyone can think of or suggest?
HoneyBee4Me 05-10-2006, 01:06 PM Are you able to drive to Fon du Lac or how will you be getting there??? Waupun is not that far away from there and if you're driving from Chicago, the exit for Waupun is actually before Fon du Lac and the distance from the exit to Waupun is about the same as from the exit to Fon du Lac.
There's also a hotel right in Waupun you can stay in - AmericInn or something like that. I'm sure there are a ton in Fon du Lac too since it's much bigger.
PM me if you'd like more info or have specific questions. I'll try to help.
HoneyBee4Me 05-10-2006, 01:07 PM Fon du Lac is much closer than Milwaukee to Waupun. Waupun does have hotels and little motels too. It's a nice tiny town, very pretty.
mggwife 05-10-2006, 04:14 PM Hi! Funny, I just walked in and saw this post. Just got home from Waupun and visiting my love! I live in Fond du Lac. There is a hotel/motel a few blocks from the prison and a couple restaurants and stores. Actually, you can walk to the prison. It's right smack in the middle of a neighborhood. Visits are 3 hours but since you are coming from so far, you can get longer visits.
PM me and I can help ya out.
d-end's 05-22-2006, 10:32 AM I am very happy to finally talk to someone who could really help me out. Right now i'm not driving so Greyhound has to be my best friend they said they only go as far as Fond du Lac so if you know my best options after I arrive at the station please write back. The names of the hotels/motels closes to Waupan would be nice; whether I'll have to take a cab or bus to the hotel/motel their rates, etc.
meinkenicole 06-01-2006, 08:59 AM If anyone knows anything about tacheedah I would love to know what my baby sister is going to being dealing with for the next 24 months thanx
I know a friend who's kid came from there and it was rough (sorry). Yet she made some good friends there. They tried to keep in touch but my friend had to put a block on the phone. Hopefully your sister wil be able to connect with some good people.
Richies Mom WI 06-14-2006, 09:37 PM I have a friend who just got sent there. I have a son in Green Bay. This web sight is a God send.
Richies Mom WI 06-14-2006, 09:52 PM I am so new to the computer so, bear with me. My friend was sent to Boscebel. I hear it's bad. Thank God my son is not there. All the info I find here is so appreciated. How long before an inmate gets to move to a lesser secured place and what is involved with getting moved?
moecrow 06-17-2006, 09:38 PM I would appreciate any info on Fox Lake. My friend was just moved there from Oshkosh. I have been up to see him already but any info would be helpful. I am 4 hours away from him so when my daughter and I do go see him we end up at a hotel. So any help with cheap ones in the area would be greatly appreciated. Or any good camping areas around. Also things that a 12 year old girl would be interested in doing/seeing. We only get up there about once a month, if we are lucky. Between the phone calls and helping him financially it gets expensive.
Does anyone know what Act 109 is all about?
New to this site and am enjoying all the info available.
Thanks!
bellamami 07-05-2006, 03:14 PM Any info on what Gordon is like? He just got rec from prc for Gordon. Any and all lil details would be appreciated.
pto12345 02-12-2008, 01:21 AM It sickens me knowing prisoner's are treated so inhumanely. Yes the ones who have murdered, or done horrific things to people without a shadow of a doubt should be treated with no respect and dignity, but guys who did non violent things should be housed in a different area and not treated like they are worth less than dirt. I could never treat a human being like that, so I could never work in a place like that. I was going into the criminal justice program at college, but have since changed my mind. Working with people who are so biased, and inhumane, I would end up losing my job. There used to be a prisoner's advocate group in MN , but they got rid of it. Gee, does that surprise anyone? Does Wisconsin have anything like that? Would the civil liberties union have anything to do with this? This is so appalling. Some people have hardly done anything, but had bad representation and lost their cases. Where do we go to start some kind of movement to change this?
pto12345 02-22-2008, 07:23 AM I want to know if anyone has a person in the first part of being at Dodge, in Waupun. Need to know what they put them through. Do they assess them for psychiatric help, especially if the records show he is severely depressed all the time, and if it shows he has tried suicide many times. He has not written or called because of a fight the night before he got moved from Barron County. I am mad, but worried. I want to know if they give a damn and if this is where they decide to give him help.
Ebveda 02-22-2008, 02:37 PM My fiance said that they did do a psychiatric evaluation along with a physical. I think he said before they are staffed anywhere this is where they decide what programs they are to complete or are eligable for.
Richies Sis WI 02-23-2008, 12:00 AM Yes, my brother went through Dodge also and like Ebveda said, they do all the medical/phsychiatric evaluations. Not sure how much help they actually get. But I would hope that if signs of depression are visible they will help your friend in any way possible.
Also if things havent changed since my brother was there, they are only allowed 1 phone call a week. What really sucked about Dodge was that only immediate family was allowed to vist, and that DIDN'T include siblings! Only Mom, Dad, wife, & children! So only my Mom & his Dad could visit him!
I hope you hear from your friend soon nowheregirl! Take Care!
myshelle02 02-23-2008, 07:24 PM I am a nurse in a prison in MN and i believe that all prison facilities are supposed to assess the inmate upon entrance to check their mental & physical health. I have a loved one in WI prison is why i am here. Unfortunately i can tell you first hand the care inmates get isn't that great, alot of things are "overlooked" or put off, out of my control most times and it really pisses me off that i can't do much about it.....
Jill0906 04-18-2008, 05:27 PM For those of you with experiecne with multiple institutions in Wisconsin, what was your general experience. The reason I ask my boyfriend is now in Arizona and I am in Wisconsin, so we are considering starting the paper work for a transfer here. (We do know that we will have to get married for him to even be considered for the move.)
Any advice would be greatly appreciate.
lilmamma4331 06-15-2008, 06:54 PM does anyone know the website to see the inmates charges??
I've been to Fox Lake, Jackson(Black River Falls), Oshkosh, and am currently at Stanley. But we're headed to Oregon/minimum soon!
