Hey, fam!! :D First I wanna say "I've missed ya'll" cause I haven't been on here in like 3 days...since I started work again...all I've done is sleep!!
Anyway...Kevin got a letter from the parole board and well, me and him are both really confused as to what this all means. He had wrote them about 2 weeks ago...and then he got this letter from them Monday. I'm gonna type out what they said and if anyone knows what this means...I would really appreciate the help (and so would Kevin). We aren't gettin' our hopes up or anything...but, we just wanna know if this is good or if it means nothing! Here it goes:
"Your case has been reviewed and tentatively set for the month of 01/2005. This action was taken for the following reason: Guideline setting.
This set date does not mean you will have a parole hearing during that month. You will recieve written notification once your hearing date has been scheduled."
Anybody know what all this means? We are both so lost. What is "guideline setting" and "tentatively set"??? Goodness...am I THAT easy to get confused!!! :D

Thanks ya'll (in advance).
I love ya'll!!!!

Selena

From what I get of that...it seems to me that due to the "guidelines" that he is due for a parole hearing...but in so many words they are telling you nicely not to hold your breath for a date in that month...ya know? but the "rules" aka "guidelines" say he is up for one then...ya know? So to cover their BUTS and not get in trouble...they have to give him that letter...anywhoo that's what I got from that letter...

Guidelines means it's probably by their guidelines of when it's supposed to be set. They are saying "tentatively set", Selena, because they are 17-18 months behind and they are not about to tell anyone when theirs is going to be, just like you have seen us all talking about having had to wait beyond their scheduled hearing date...

Yea...that's why I told Kevin if he DID get a hearing date...to not get his hopes up cause they are so far behind it's not even funny. Plus...with them being THAT far behind...even if he got a hearing date before January...he would be better off just waiting until January 2006 (his min. date) cause he wouldn't "go up" till about that time.

Selena, I'm sorry I forget... is he categorized a non-violent offender? If so he may come up closer to his projected hearing date.... probably not right in that month but closer than if he is in on a violent offense...

Selena,

The board is covering themselves by NOT committing themselves to a specific date while noitifying you that they are aware that he is due a hearing according to their guideline settings...Don't be surprised if he doesn't get a hearing until 18 months later than when he's susposed to have one...That's how long the Alabama Pardons and Parole Board is behind schedule. My husband and I are "old timers" to the AL penal system unfortunately...25 yrs! This is the first time in all these years that his parole hearing has not been scheduled at least within a month or so of when it was susposed to be! He has talked with many other inmates who have recently gone up for parole hearings...and all of them were originally scheduled for hearings about 18 months ago. Imagine that!..and this is the state of things here in Alabama AFTER the Board has elected new members to increase the number of Board members to seven instead of three in an effort to "speed up" parole hearings!!! What a joke! Sorry that I cannot give you any "positive" feedback on that letter from the Board...I wish I could! God Bless you and Kevin...My prayers are with you both!

No, Lysbeth...he's considered a violent offender. (I was mistaken at first...but, after he explained everything to me...I remembered him telling me at first he was considered violent)...so, ya know? :(
Thank you everybody for the responses...at least now I can tell him that what I was thinking it may be...is what it was....

Are you sure they are 18 months behind? I spoke with a very nice woman, Marty, the other day and she said that they used to be 18 months behind, but they have hired more people to help the victim unit. She said that they are working summer and early fall of 2003. That sounds alot better than 18 months. She was very nice and explained everything to me. I have spoken to others in that unit and was treated very rudely, but she took the time to help me. I know they are behind and are working very hard. At least some of them are anyway. She told me to call her anytime and even gave me her direct number. I usually have to go through so many people to get to get the actual person that I need. Very frustrating! I feel alot better knowing that I can call her, if I have a question. Has anyone else had a good experience with the victim unit? I haven't read too many posts, but I am beginning to believe that no one has!

They are working on improving things, but my guy was scheduled for February 2003 and has just now gotten a date for late August so yes, they are still behind. They may be working on the summer of 2003 but are not scheduling them yet. There's still a friend of ours who was due in January 2003 that still hasn't gotten a date, and another due in September 2002 who has yet to get a date. I'm sure they are working towards improvement but at this point they are still quite behind, at least on violent offense cases. I'm sure non-violent cases are getting scheduled quicker.

Selena..
My son got the same worded letter a couple of months ago. It said his hearing date would be in August. They sent him a certified letter last week...he has a review on Monday. His hearing date is scheduled for August 10th. They are pretty much on time for him....but he is just a small time drug user...
