Hi Everyone,

My boyfriend Tom is in Terre Haute FPC and when he called this morning he told me that they were in lockdown because there was unrest at the maximum security UPC across the street from the camp regarding it becoming no smoking in November. He called again this evening and said that word at the Camp is that there were four guards injured, one seriously, all with stab wounds. Has anybody else heard anything about this?

Oh No, the last time this happened the whole Fed system ended up on lock down. Tell your loved ones to stock up on tuna, peanut butter and cool-aid! "Unrest" spreads through the prisons very quickly.

Could someone kindly let me in on what "unrest" means????

There was an article about Terre Haute....a few guards and an inmate hurt.

Here's the story...from FPPP

Federal prison on lock-down after assault by inmate

Terre Haute-AP -- The federal prison in Terre Haute is on lock-down following an assault on a prison guard by an inmate.

Prison officials say an inmate attacked a guard with a sharpened instrument at about eight o'clock last night.

Other prison staffers were able to subdue the inmate, remove the sharp instrument from the inmate's hand.

The inmate and four staff members were injured. The inmate required only minor first aid, but the four prison employees were taken to a hospital. Three were released, but one remains hospitalized for observation.

The names of the prisoner and the prison employees were not released.

Prison officials say the lock-down will remain in effect until prison operations can safely be returned to normal.

Thanks for posting the story, kin. Rumors are so hard to cooberate inside, and Tom will be happy to know that this one was more or less correct. With this federal building no smoking ban kicking into effect soon, let's all just hope that things stay relatively calm.

What's this about "no smoking in November?" Anyone have more detailed information? Zelda

Zelda, as per the Warden at Marion...a group of inmates filed a lawsuit against the BOP for being exposed to 2nd hand smoke. Rather than go to trial, the BOP decided to ban smoking in all the prisons. It starts in November. By next July (I believe) all of them should be smoke free. The inmates in USP are really upset. That's where the trouble will be. Especially in USP's like Marion where they are in lockdown 23 hours a day. Many of them are serving more than one life-sentence. How do you think they will react to not being able to smoke in their cells? The warden said the inmates who filed the law suit will now have to be protected in lock down themselves!!!

WOA! I hadn't heard that. Last I heard, it was up to each warden. Will they be passing out the nicotine patches? Zelda

And is it a total ban or just inside buildings? Anyone have an official document about this or it is just word-of-mouth?

The BOP program statement on this states that it is up to the warden of each individual institution. I posted the actual program statement some months ago when the decision first came down.

Very funny - wouldn't it be nice if you COULD say that! Here's the regulation. I remember this regulation - I just was wondering if there was something more recent. This basically says no inside smoking and it's up to each warden regarding outside smoking.

Smoking/No Smoking Areas

AGENCY: Bureau of Prisons, Justice.

ACTION: Final rule.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

SUMMARY: In this document, the Bureau of Prisons (Bureau) revises its
regulations pertaining to smoking/no smoking areas in Bureau
facilities. The revised regulations require the Warden to designate a
smoking area for use in instances where smoking is to be part of an
authorized religious activity. If the Warden designates smoking areas
for general use (that is, for smoking which is not part of an
authorized religious activity), the area must be in visibly designated
outdoor locations. The amendment also requires the concurrence of the
Regional Director if the Warden chooses not to designate smoking areas
for general use. Once this occurs, the Regional Director's concurrence
is also required if the Warden later chooses to designate smoking areas
for general use at the institution. We intend this amendment to promote
a clean air environment and to protect the health and safety of staff
and inmates.

My boyfriend is also at Terre Haute camp and he did tell me about this lockdown. The camp stopped smoking during visits last Jan. of '03 and now banning it completely. I do understand the second hand smoke thing but so much is taken away from them that I don't understand why they can't have a cigarette. My boyfriend is a smoker and is pretty upset about it. But I guess in a way he'll be healthier. Now he wants me to quit too. I think I'm gonna try.

Very funny, Vince. Not any I know of. Seriously, maybe you should get the patch now and try to quit before you go in. Seems like it would be easier doing it on the outside than quitting and adjusting all at the same time!
