View Full Version : Calling all Crafter's & Hobbyists! Check in!
redphoenixx 07-05-2004, 03:06 AM Calling all Crafter's & Hobbyists! Tell everyone what kind of hobbys & crafts you enjoy doing, your current project and your favorite past projects.
Personally, I do a little of everything. My favorite kind of project is taking something found at Goodwill, etc and someow changing it so it becomes a really cool thing. My current project involves oriental looking vase (was $1  ) and I am painting it to look very old and expensive.
My all time favorite project.....Actually, I have two. One would be a old hubcap that I turned into a clock. The other is a lampshade frame that I covered in chicken wire, then hung hundreds of glass beads off it using eyepins.
California Sunshine 07-05-2004, 03:56 PM I am not creative at all:( Just had to say I admire you though!!! :)
hb'sweetie 07-06-2004, 03:31 PM I enjoy latch hook rugs, I have designed ones for my children and grandchildren. I have no project right now, I need more canvas. I like the kits but enjoy designing them. My favorite was one I made with NC State Tarheel goat and logo. And I got paid to be a hooker!! Ha!! Ha!!

mrsford 07-06-2004, 11:11 PM I love to sew, making clothing for me, my grandkids, and anything anyone asks me to make them! I recently sewed an outfit for my grandaughter to wear to her teacher's wedding. I was so proud of myself when I saw how much she loved the outfit. The best part was shopping for and picking out the material she wanted her outfit made of. My younger grandsons love the short outfits made out of the "cool" material, like Shrek 2 and Curious George. I love to make quilts and aprons too. I scrapbook like a fiend. Have found very creative ways to save money on making things. JoAnn fabrics sends each mailer subscriber a 50% off coupon with each mailer. Needless to say, all of my grandkids are subscribers, as are my friends and families. And when the patterns go on sale for 99 cents each, I am in heaven! I have even listed my patterns on the computer where I can see in a second if I have a certain pattern or if I need to get one when they go on sale! I can s-t-r-e-t-c-h the bucks when I have to! And that is all the time. And I like to buy stuff from Goodwill and re-do it also. A lot of my stuff is from there. I will get off here now. I can go on forever writing about this stuff! Good luck to all.
jcbw4 07-07-2004, 11:57 PM I'm a quilter. My mother-in-law owns a fabric store and I go there every Saturday to sew whatever project I'm working on. I usually give my quilts away for Christmas presents but now I'm going to start selling them on Ebay, too make some cash.
I also sew pj's or pullovers out of polar fleece for my son as that is all that he will wear homemade, but my niece will wear anything I make her. But quilting is my passion.
Marci 07-18-2004, 03:08 AM I'm addicted to stamping! I make all of my own greeting cards - Kevin says I should sell them at a craft fair, thinking about it! I love to scrapbook, interior decorate, and have so many projects going at once - I can't ever finish just one! Right now I'm:

JustChendy 07-19-2004, 11:02 AM I am not too talented but I do scrapbooks, have made belly castings, and make these cute little fabric dolls!
KMFDM75 07-19-2004, 11:16 PM I like scrapbooking the most. I can sew and do enjoy it. My problem is finding the time and modivation. My last project was a flannel baby quilt that I made for a friend at work. She loved it!

JodyAnnShaw 07-21-2004, 03:16 PM I learned how to crochet when I was locked up, and still do it to this day. I am about half way finished with a king size granny blanket right now.
I also love to draw and paint.. mostly water colors.
mrsford 07-21-2004, 03:23 PM Marci, you sound like me!!! I have a few projects started, and have been working hard on getting stuff I start finished. Once I get something finished it gives me the motivation to finish other things. Sounds like everyone responding to this posting is sooo talented. And that is kind of what personality talented people have. Wanting to do so much we never finish!!! I love this posting. Good luck all. I have now been motivated to go home and finish just one little thing!!!
Abeygayle 07-26-2004, 09:07 AM Hi all, I do a bit here and there with crocheting different blankets for all of the children and grandchildren as they come along.
Stamping, now that is fun. STickers of all holidays are also a great deal of fun and I make some of the holidays on the computer.
Recently I started to quilt.
Here in the area that I live in a young lady has devoted the past year to trying to send to the immediate family of everyone killed in Iraq a quilt.
It is an awesome project for someone so very young. She is 18 and has delayed going to college for a year to do this project.
We are having a quilt out for four days in August hoping to finish 100 quilts.
I am not that good yet so I will be helping out with the food and organizing things.
As I work from home I can create my own hours to do this.
I also collect coins for all of the children, only the quarter ones so far. This has turned out to be quite a project in finding certain states.
Still have a few missing that I simply cannot find.
Anyone here collect the state quarters?
Have a good hobby day.
babieboo 07-28-2004, 01:35 PM I love sewing and I am a glue gun freak!! I just made a heart shaped hair scrunchie box with grey velvet w/ blue gems and a pink satin ribbon going across. Also I collect stickers and make up!
I like to draw and paint as well. This I am going to learn how to crochet cuz I want to make a scarf for the winter :) . I love arts and crafts.
mrsford 07-28-2004, 02:47 PM Abeygayle, I too have been collecting the state quarters. The credit union I belong to sells sets of them with a bunch of information, but I have some of those collector books too. It is a challenge in finding some of the older quarters. The last time I posted on this thread I was on a mission to complete one project, and I am pleased to say I have finished one of the quilts I am working on!!!! I felt so satisfied in finally completing something and so proud of myself. I am now working on completing a second project. It has given me motivation to do something when I get home from work. Good luck to everyone!!!
PatMD7 07-28-2004, 02:53 PM I started a scrapbook club about 4 years ago. Four friends get together every two weeks to work on our projects and share ideas. Summer we take off, and just get together for dinner, etc. We rotate going to each others house and someone other than the hostess brings snacks, etc. It makes for a fun time. I also started stamping greeting cards....but I must admit I need to make a bunch more so I can get better at it.
Hey Abigail....I have two quarter collections going. I'm having trouble finding a few myself. Maybe we could swap? Let me know what you need. Trisha

mixedemotions 08-06-2004, 12:12 AM I LOVE to sew! I just started making my own clothes a couple months ago. I also love to scrapbook. I have 6 for my son and he is only 2!
jessnkat 08-20-2004, 11:03 AM I love to cross stitch! I can't believe no one else does! I stitch while watching tv at night (when I'm not in the chat room :D ). I also read alot! Lately my project has been home improvement projects - I've repainted most of the rooms, had my mother make curtains, quilts, and throw pillows and lots of stuff! Jess won't recognize the place when he gets home :) !
Kat
redphoenixx 08-27-2004, 04:57 AM Jessnkat- you aren't alone! I do cross stitch too. I tend to do it more often in the winter for some reason. I'm just not a real outdoorsy person, so I curl up with the kitty and do that. Also, you can do that and watch tv at the same time. Just doesn't work with reading a book!
irisheyes66 08-27-2004, 09:39 AM Jess and red.....
I've been cross-stitching since the age of 9; my grandmother taughte me :D
I am a true addict...up until leaving for Kansas, I belonged to a women's stitch group. We would meet at one members' house every week, pull out our projects, put on the coffee, and yakyakyakayak....LOL! Most of us cross-stitched, but there were a few who worked needlepoint, tatting, crochet, etc.
Our group would go on "field trips"....the Sudberry House Garage Sale (when I moved, I counted 8 HUGE boxes of their goodies!), Heart and Soul Stitchery Shoppe, Tapestry of Dreams (now closed due to retirement), you name it. We visited cross-stitch stores from Glastonbury, CT to NYC to Martha's Vineyard, and everything in between! I have a mountain of "stash" that 50 women could never finish in this lifetime...it was one of the few things I refused to leave behind when I moved. Of course, my Dad thought I was nuts, but I've spent over 20 years collecting my "stitch stuff", and will never part with any of it :D
There's always a few stands with "works in progress" scattered through my home...whenever I need to decompress, I pick a project, settle in, and off I go!
Haven't had much time to do anything lately, with redecorating and all, but I'm working on a Native American piece for Shawn's Dad....can't wait to finish and send it off.
Because I worked at Michael's for so long, I've always managed to get my work pinned, matted and framed for free...as long as the boss wasn't looking  Now I'll have to find a new alternative. I can stretch and pin it myself, and have literally hundreds of custom frames from when we closed our old store and moved to a new location. Can you imagine--frames we sold for up to $200, and I got them all for $1 each. I also have a mat cutter I got a couple of years ago, but have never used.
So, it looks like I'll have ANOTHER hobby....do-it-yourself framing! LOL!
Fred's Gal 08-27-2004, 10:17 AM
Fred's Gal 08-27-2004, 10:22 AM Sorry hit the wrong button before... I also do cross stitch more in the Winter. I try to have a project done for each of my adult children for Christmas. Right now though I'm working on a "Noah's Ark, Now I lay Me Down To Sleep" for my New Granddaughter due in October.
Need to get working on it if I'm going to have it done though!

rottn 09-26-2004, 05:29 PM I always have a cross stitch something or another going. My new roomie is teaching me how to knit right now and I'm making scarves for everyone I know and even people I don't. I crochet a little bit. The only patterns I can read are cross stitch ones though. The rest I just do my own thing and count.
jessnkat 09-26-2004, 07:51 PM Susan - you are too funny! When you take up that new hobby, I have some matting I need done! I can do the framing myself, but I need mats cut! I used to work for Michael's too and took advantage of the free "when the boss isn't looking" labor also! I hit garage sales on a regular basis and that is one thing I just can't say NO to is a cheap frame - I have them in every shape and size you can imagine! They are just waiting for me to actually finish something to put in them!
Lady Wabbit 09-26-2004, 10:36 PM I too cross stitch. I'm working on (have been for a couple of years off and on) a baby quilt, sheet set, pillow case and bibs. Hopefully I'll have a grandbaby to give it to someday. *L* I've been crocheting since I was about 6 when my grandmother taught me. I'm working on 7 quilts for christmas (ya'll pray for me that I finish them).
This summer my sister and I remodeled our moms kitchen and living room and now we're getting ready to build a porch and fence her back yard.
Other than that all I do is lay around and read.*LOL*

MsAloha1018 09-27-2004, 04:04 AM I just started crocheting again. I've just learned how to make baby rose luggage tags by one of the women who rides the same bus that I do. Plus she crochets these BEAUTIFUL lei (flower garland worn around the forehead, neck...very Hawaiian) that I want to learn how to do. And granny squares too. I haven't made a beer can hat but may do it soon, just to see if I can do it.
I would LOVE to get back into cross-stitching. And knitting. But I don't have much time so just stick with crocheting for now. I noticed that I smoke less when I crochet which is a good thing, like Martha Stewart says.
I have sewing since high school and have a HUGE amount of machines, patterns and fabrics but have done very little of it the last two years. I did spend a whole lot of time for two years redoing rooms in my house and did not finish some of it!
I am a demonstrator for stampin up but have mainly done stuff for my own use. Since I write to about 10 people, I decorate envelopes with rubber stamps and then use markers or water color paints to decorate them. I make cards also. I should be doing scrapbooking but just have not gotten going very far.
I was going to goodwill almost every book sale day and buying books to send to inmates but am going to quit that for awhile! I was spending too much time and money and neglecting the house.
I have enjoyed making dolls in the past and many hobbies.
whitewolf2751 10-21-2004, 07:00 AM I'm big on counted cross stitch and love working on large kits and designing my own patterns. I also enjoy doing loomed beadwork and leather crafts but these I do mostly in the winter.
In the warm months I'm a garden nut and have way too many large flower beds as well as an herb and veggie garden and even a wildflower meadow. The thing with my gardening though, is I was some 20 years younger when I first did all of the landscaping and got it all started and now its' just too much for me to keep up by myself so I usually have to recruit help from my grandson.
Gardening is a 'hard work' kind of hobby so I always look forward to fall and winter so I can just kick back in the ol' recliner and relax with my cross stitch work. :)
ksoccio1 10-21-2004, 09:47 AM
elephantstamper 10-30-2004, 09:53 PM I rubber stamp...a lot. So much so that I had to start selling them to support my hobby. I am a demonstrator for The Angel Company...The have the greatest stuff.
And, I scrapbook too...I like stamping in my scrapbook, and I make most all of my greeting cards, I don't think I have bought a greeting card in about 3 years..other than the ones I bought for the PTO card project..not sure what places accept homeade stuff..Ya know?? I also make wreaths out of fabric scraps, and the straw wreaths wrapped in plastic...they turn out pretty cool....(got the glue gun fettish going on there) I just love being crafty...LOL
hugs_n_kisses04 11-04-2004, 05:46 AM Hey all you talented people:D
I am a crafts addict as well...I love to sew and make quilts of all kinds such as photo quilts, etc...I am also fond of scrap booking as well...If anyone is interested in a photo quilt (I'm looking to make a little bit of money to see my husband in florida in march) please PM me and let me know:) This thread is a really neat idea...
bhdmas 09-23-2005, 11:50 PM i like to do latch hooking also. I have made a few from the patterns. I am currently working on a rocking horse i purchased at a garage sale 5.00 and painted it purple and am going to put fur, flowers, beads, and whatever else i can find and decorate it all up, not sure what i will do when it is done, but it sounded like fun.
I also enjoy working word search puzzles, and computer games.......
Lillybee 09-24-2005, 10:19 AM A friend at work taught me to cross stitch many years ago and I truly enjoy it. DMC thread colors (OMG) :). I crochet too, but can only make afghans. I enjoy mixing the colors together. Plus I like working with my hands.
FLTmpaBay 09-25-2005, 08:59 AM My grandmother taught me to sew when I was a young girl. I make boxers, skirts, bathing suits, blouses, aprons, placemats, hairties, slacks. I make quilted blankets, baby blankets, throw pillows, pretty much anything.
My grandmother sewed clothes for her children, at the time is was more affordable than buying new clothes.
Now, sewing has become a very expensive hobby. I only sew for my loved ones who truly will appreciate the time & effort.
shewhocrochetsk 09-27-2005, 02:22 AM As the subject line says, I'm new to PTO, and, I crochet. ( I've also been known to do counted Cross Stitch, Open and stamped embroidery, and a little very basic sewing.)
I have several projects going at the moment- 2 scrap afghans, and a crochet scarf. (Although I've ALSO been known to take a break from my main projects and stitch up something small and simple- to stave off boredom from a larger project.)
I'm not sure if we're allowed to post pics here, otherwise, I'd post a few pics of some of my past projects...
I've many other interests other than crocheting or crafting, I'm also a proverbial bookworm- it almost never fails at one point or another that I've got my nose stuck a book! LOL..Then again, I also like cooking,too...:D
