View Full Version : Interior Design- Do-it-yourself
a.lil.love 07-04-2004, 03:01 PM I know we have a forum for Do It Yourself now...
How great....
Anyhow I love the do-it-yourself shows... While You Were Out, In a Fix, Trading Spaces, Design on a Dime... and whatnot.
I sit in front of the TV and I have a notebook dedicated to this evertime I see a good idea I write it down and sometimes go to the shows website and look it up and print it out for future reference. So I have a bookful of projects, some ideas of my own, and plenty of time... all I need now is the resources (read:MONEY) to do them!!!!!
I have started and it is so fun and now I have great, original desins that i am so proud of. My headboard is one of my favorites... you can read about that in a thread I posted in the Do It Yourself forum!!!
So... anyone else a do-it-yourself nut????
We should share ideas... I have so many...... Or ask each other questions....
irisheyes66 07-04-2004, 03:44 PM Once I had decided to make the cross-country move to a new beginning, I knew I wanted to do things the right way. I wanted my new place to be organized, creative, and yet still cost-conscious :D
Back then, I was still working at Michael's Arts and Crafts. Besides buying up every idea book/stencil/paint tool I could get my hands on, each month I saved a copy of all the decorating mags (Walls With Style, BH&G, Country Living, etc) we returned to the vendor; some months that would mnean a dozen+ magazines, LOL! I would go through each one, tear out the ideas/colors/styles/furniture I liked, and then I assembled all the images in a magnetic photo album (there are a few now!).
When it comes down to the decision, I have a good reference as to what I want, and how it will come together in the rooms. I even brought the albums right into Home Depot to match paint colors...the man who helped me said it was a great idea :D
I'm still choosing, but have the colors for the living and dining rooms picked out. Once you have your colors in mind, it's much easier to decide on furniture, accessories, etc.
Happy Decorating!
a.lil.love 07-04-2004, 07:49 PM I totally agree Irish...
Now we have two things in common.. decorating and Kansas... you just moved there and I am moving there in January....
kreepsgirl 07-05-2004, 02:05 AM Yes!!! Yes!!! Yes!!! I love all of those shows. I like your idea of having a notebook and writing down things. I live in a apartment and cant do a lot of the things they do on those shows like painting walls and stuff like that.
Ebony's spice 07-05-2004, 02:36 AM I love home projects - well the decorating ones, not the sewer pipe ones. I'm so excited about this forum. I miss all those shows because I don't have cable TV, but I have seen Trading Spaces and Queer Eye for the Straight Guy (?) and loved them.
I need cheap ideas for my living room floor. This is an old farmhouse and the old linoleum was cracked and curled. So one day (about 2 years ago!), I got so sick of it, I tore it all up. Now it's bare plywood. I'm thinking about painting it, but it'd have to be really tough as it's a major traffic area. Any ideas? I really can't afford tile and with all my animals, carpet is totally out.
I do have something I really like that everyone comments on.......that is lighting. I know this isn't a "do-it-yourself project", but rather than use the over head lights in the hallway, my bedroom, etc., I string those cool lights that they have now. Kind of like Christmas lights, but now they come in dragonflys, bamboo, tins, etc. I just string them across the ceiling and down the wall for instance and plug them in. It's really soft, but yet enough light for night. I even have a strand (flowers) around my kitchen window that I use at night. I think they probably use a lot less electricity too than a 100 watt light bulb.
kreepsgirl 07-05-2004, 02:44 AM I love those lights Ginger! After I get new carpet Tuesday I'm thinking about plugging mine in.
minniecas 07-05-2004, 02:56 AM I love to cook....I have ever cookbook ever made. I have so many cookbooks that I have them in boxes under my house.. I love throwing partys with lots of different food.. Food network, when I get time you'll catch me watching it.....My mom always told me to get a man is thru his stomach... It works......minnie:cool:
Marci 07-18-2004, 03:13 AM Want one for the living room -to hide the tv, then move the entertainment center downstairs to the basement family room I'm re-doing. I've found lots of pics, but no instructions/blueprints. KEvin and a friend will be working on it - and I don't want it to fall apart the first day!! Any ideas? Yes, I've done searched on the net - no instruction that I can find/
Anyone??
Blessings!
Carlax3 09-06-2004, 11:20 PM Why don't you paint the plywood? Maybe make it checkered -- or faux paint it
Just remember to prime it first

mrsford 09-07-2004, 01:12 AM I too love those shows. That is a good idea to keep a notebook together. I write stuff down and then put it all in a shoe box! Messy! I am going to have a little time on my hands too, so I am going thru the rooms in my house. The Christmas like lights are wonderful. I use them everywhere! My husband collects Coca Cola stuff, and I have been making trays and decorations for our house. I even made some stencils to use in the bathroom. Did I mention every room in the house has something Coca Cola in it? What started as a collection, has now become a passion. And I gave in and am finishing up while he is away. I even have Coca Cola bedding!!!!!
